The adsorption features of $Ni^{2+}$ onto spent alkaline manganese batteries powder have been investigated with the adsorbent dose, initial concentration of adsorbate and temperature as the experimental variables. The adsorption reaction of $Ni^{2+}$ ion followed the pseudo-second order rate model, and the adsorption rate constants($k_2$) decreased with increasing initial concentration of nickel ion. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Freundlich model represents the equilibrium data better than the Langmuir model in this initial adsorbate concentration range. As the temperature increased, the adsorbed amount of nickel ion at equilibrium was also increased, which indicated that the adsorption reaction was endothermic. Based on the experimental results obtained along with temperatures, thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ},\;{\Delta}G^{\circ},\;and\;{\Delta}S^{\circ}$ were calculated.
To investigate the adsorption-desorption reaction of Cd by sewage sludge, the adsorption of Cd from $Cd(NO_3)_2$ solutions of concentrations ranging from 5 to $50{\mu}g\;Cd\;mL^{-1}$ by sewage sludge was examined for reaction periods up to 48 hours. The amount of Cd adsorbed as a function of time was measured. The adsorption between Cd in solution and the solid phase could be described by two stages. The initial adsorption of Cd was very rapid, that is, approximately 95% of the added Cd was removed from solution within the first 30 minutes. Further, the greater the concentration of Cd added, the greater was the amount of Cd adsorbed. After the rapid initial decrease of Cd, a slower decline in the Cd concentration resulted which followed first order reversible kinetics. The equilibrium concentrations for the reactions, as well as the time period for the equilibrium reactions were dependent on the initial Cd concentrations. If equilibrium is reached, the amount of Cd remaining in solution is greater when the amount adsorbed is higher, although the percentage of Cd in solution is constant relative to the initial concentration of Cd. Some of the adsorbed Cd was released back to solution since the concentration of Cd after 48 hours was higher than the equilibrium concentration of Cd. However, despite the increased amount of Cd measured, the overall net reaction was a significant adsorption of Cd from solution by sewage sludge.
Adsorption of heavy metals by sawdust was investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of using sawdust to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Kinetic and isotherm studies were carried out by considering the effects of initial concentration and pH. The adsorption isotherms of heavy metals fitted the Langmuir or Freundlich model reasonably well. The adsorption capacity of metal was in the order $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$. A high concentration of co-existing ions such as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ depressed the adsorption of heavy metal. Adsorption data showed that metal adsorption on sawdust follows a pseudo-second-order reaction. Kinetic studies also indicated that both surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion were involved in metal adsorption on sawdust. Column studies prove that sawdust could be effective biosorbent for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous phase.
Adsorption of phosphate, sulfate, and copper ion to goethite was investigated. Goethite was prepared in the alkaline solution. In the single adsorbate systems, the final equilibrium plateau reached within 20 min. The adsorption isotherms of the individual ions could be well described by the Langmuir equation. The maximum adsorption capacities (q$\_$max/) were calculated as 0.483 m㏖/g and 0.239 m㏖/g at pH 3 for phosphate and sulfate ion, and 0.117 m㏖/g at pH 6 for copper ion, respectively, In competitive adsorption system with phosphate and sulfate, phosphate ion was a stronger competitor for adsorption on goethite than sulfate ion, which was consistent with higher affinity of phosphate ion for the surface compared to sulfate ion. The existence of sulfate ion enhanced the adsorption of copper ion but the adsorption of sulfate was inhibited when copper ion was present.

The process parameters of ethyl violet from aqueous solution by activated carbon adsorption were carried out as a function of pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium data can be described well by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Base on Langmuir constant ($R_L=0.0343{\sim}0.0523$) and Freundlich constant (1/n=0.1633~0.1974), This process could be employed as effective treatment for adsorption of ethyl violet. The kinetic experimental results showed that the adsorption process can be well described with the pseudo second order model. Based on the positive enthalpy (6.505 kJ/mol), the adsorption of ethyl violet onto granular activated carbon is endothermic. The negative Gibbs free energy (-1.169~-1.681 kJ/mol) obtained indicates that the adsorption process is spontaneous and physisorption.
In batch experiments, the adsorption of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel was studied using Sylopute. Experimental equilibrium data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Among the four isotherm models tested, the Langmuir isotherm model gave the highest accuracy. The adsorption capacity was found to decrease with increases in temperature and the adsorption of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel onto Sylopute was a favorable physical process. Adsorption kinetic data agreed very well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while boundary layer diffusion and intraparticle diffusion did not play a key role in the adsorption process. The process of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel adsorption onto Sylopute was exothermic and nonspontaneous. Also, the adsorption isosteric heat was independent of surface loading indicating an energetically homogeneous adsorbent.
In this study, the characteristics of lead removal by PVA and alginate bead which used widely as immobilizing agents were investigated, and the difference of removal amounts between pure PVA/alginate bead and Sargassum thunbergii immobilized bead was studied. All PVA beads, pure and S. thunbergii immobilized, reached an equilibrium state in about 1 hour, and S. thunbergii immobilized bead adsorbed more lead than pure one. But in the case of alginate beads, they needed much time, about 5 hours, to reach an equilibrium state, and adsorbed lead four times higher than PVA beads. Therefore, it was considered that alginate beads had more mass transfer resistance and function groups which adsorb lead such as hydroxyl, carboxyl and etc. than PVA bead. To examine the continuous usage of alginate beads, the process of adsorption/desorption of lead was conducted repeatedly. As the process proceeded, the amounts of lead adsorption decrease, so it was indicated that the non-desorbed lead from alginate bead at first adsorption/desorption process remained constantly.
Nanoporous carbon structures were synthesized by pyrolysis of grass as carbon precursor. The synthesized carbon has high surface area and pore volume. The carbon products were acid functionalized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, transmission electron microscopy, and Energy Dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Acid functionalized nanoporous carbon was explored for use in removal of toxic Cr(VI) ions from aqueous media. An adsorption study was done as a function of initial concentration, pH, contact time, temperature, and interfering ions. The experimental equilibrium data fits well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 35.335 mg/g. The results indicated that removal obeys a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and that equilibrium was reached in 10 min. A desorption study was done using NaOH. The results of the present study imply that acid functionalized nanoporous carbon synthesized from grass is an efficient, renewable, cost-effective adsorbent material for removal of hexavalent chromium due to its faster removal rate and reusability.
The paper includes the utlization of an activated carbon as a potential adsorbent to remove a hazardous fluorescein dye from an aqueous solution. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out for the removal of fluorescein dyes using a granular activated carbon as an adsorbent. The effects of various parameters such as pH, amount of adsorbent, contact time, initial concentration and temperature of the adsoprtion system were investigated. The experimental results revealed that activated carbon exhibit high efficiencies to remove fluorescein dyes from the aqueous solution. The equilibrium process can be well described by Freundlich isotherm in the temperature range from 298 K to 318 K. From adsorption kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed a pseudo second order kinetic model, and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with increasing the initial concentration of fluorescein. The free energy of adsorption ${\Delta}G^0$), enthalpy ${\Delta}H^0$), and entropy (${\Delta}S^0$) change were calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The estimated values for ${\Delta}G^0$ were -17.11~-20.50 kJ/mol over an activated carbon at 250 mg/L, indicated toward a spontaneous process. The positve value for ${\Delta}H^0$, 33.2 kJ/mol, indicates that the adsorption of fluorescein dyes on an activated carbon is an endothermic process.
Heavy metal contamination has attracted considerable attention during recent decades due to the potential risk brought about for human beings and the environment. Several adsorbent materials are utilized for the purification of contaminated water resources among which chitosan is considered as an appropriate alternative. Copper is a heavy metal contaminants found in several industrial wastewaters and its adsorption on porous and macroporous chitosan membranes is investigated in this study. Membranes are prepared by phase inversion and particulate leaching method and their morphology is characterized using SEM analysis. Batch adsorption experiments are performed and it is found that copper adsorption on macroporous chitosan membrane is higher than porous membrane. The iso-steric heat of adsorption was determined by analyzing the variations of temperature to investigate its effect on adsorption characteristics of macroporous chitosan membranes. Furthermore, desorption experiments were studied using NaCl and EDTA as eluants. The mechanism of copper adsorption was also investigated using XPS spectroscopy which confirms simultaneous occurrence of chelation and electrostatic adsorption mechanisms.
