The adsorption experiment of phenol(Ph) from aqueous solution on granular activated carbon was studied in order to design the fixed-bed adsorption column. The experimental data were analyzed by unsteady-state, one-dimensional heterogeneous model. Finite element method(FEM) was applied to analyze the sensitivity of parameter and to predict the fixed-bed adsorption column performance on operation variable changes. The prediction model showed similar effect to mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion coefficient changes suggesting that both parameter present mass transfer rate limits for GAC-phenol system. The Freundlich constants had a greater effect than kinetic parameters for the performance of fixed-bed adsorption column. FEM solution facilitated prediction of concentration history in solution and within adsorbent particle.
When the light metals such as $Ca^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$ were added to heavy metal solution, the adsorption of heavy metals was increased by 20 to 30% more, but there were no differences between species. $Pb^{++}$ was the most adsorbed metal(99.5%), and the adsorption ratio of $Cd^{++}$ was significantly improved. In addition, when the light metal concentration was increased to 100ppm, the adsoption ratios of all four heavy metals were reached to 92 to 99%, while coniferous barks showed only 85 to 92%. On the mixture of four heavy metals, the adsorbed amount of each metal was significantly reduced, compared with that of one heavy metal, while $Zn^{++}$ showed the adsorption improvement to 95%. On the column experiment, $Pb^{++}$ was almost completely adsorbed in the upper part of column, and the adsorbed amount of $Cu^{++}$ was gradually decreased depending on column depth. However, $Cd^{++}$ and $Zn^{++}$ were not influenced by column height, and constantly adsorbed on various column height. Based on the above results, each heavy metal had different adsorption mechanism.
Lysine produced during microbial fermentation is usually recovered by an ion-exchange process, in which lysine is first converted to the cationic form (by lowering the pH to less than 2.0 with sulfuric acid) and then fed to a cationexchange column containing an exchanger that has a sulfone group with a weak counterion such as NH;. Ammonia water with a pH above 11 is then supplied to the column to displace the purified lysine from the column and allow its recovery. To enhance the adsorption capacity and for a possible reduction in chemical consumption, monovalent lysine fed at pH 4 was investigated in comparison with conventional divalent lysine fed at pH 1.5. The adsorption capacity increased by more than 70% on a mass basis using pH 4 feeding compared with pH 1.5 feeding. Lysine adsorbed at pH 4 started to elute earlier than that adsorbed at pH 1.5 when ammonia water was used as the eluant solution, and the extent of early elution became more notable at lower concentrations of ammonia. Moreover, the elution of monovalent lysine fed at pH 4 displayed a stiffer front boundary and higher peak concentration. However, when the ammonium concentration was greater than 2.0 N, complete saturation of the bed was delayed during adsorption and the percent recovery yield from elution was lowered., both drawbacks that were considered inevitable features originating from the increased adsorption of monovalent lysine.
The feasibility of the employment of waste oyster shell as an adsorbent for fluoride ion has been tested by considering the effect ionic condition on the adsorption of fluoride ion on oyster shell. The adsorption capacity of oyster shell for fluoride ion was found not to be significantly influenced by the ionic strength of aqueous environment. The existence of complexing agent such as nitrilotriacetic acid in wastewater decreased the adsorbed amount of fluoride ion by forming a stable complex of $CaT^-$ and the adsorption reaction of fluoride ion on oyster shell was examined to be endothermic. The coexisting heavy metal ionic adsorbate in wastewater hindered the adsorption of fluoride ion, however, its adsorbed amount was increased as the particulate size of adsorbent was decreased. Finally, a serial adsorption column test has been conducted for a practical application of adsorption process and the breakthrough of the column adsorption was observed in 22 hours under the experimental condition.
As(III)의 흡착 및 탈착속도는 As(V)보다 빨랐다.
The adsorption experiments of lithium ions were conducted in the fixed bed column packed with activated carbon modified with nitric acid. Effect of inlet concentration, bed hight and flow rate on the removal of lithium ions was investigated. The experimental results showed that the removal and the adsorption capacity of lithium ions increased with increasing inlet concentration, and decreased with increasing flow rate. When the bed height increased, the removal and the adsorption capacity increased. The breakthrough curves gave a good fit to Bohart-Adams model. Adsorption capacity and breakthrough time calculated from Bohart-Adams model, these results were remarkably consistent with the experimental values. The adsorption capacity was not changed in the case of 3 times repetitive use of adsorbent.
Granular activated carbon is commonly used in fixed-bed adsorbers to remove organic chemicals. In this experiment organic chemical solutions were prepared by adding the reagent grade organic chemical to distilled water. Isotherm adsorption tests of volatile organic chemicals were conducted using bottle-point technique and column test. Organic chemicals after passing through the column were extracted with hexane and analyzed with gas chromatography (Hewlett-Packard 5890) to check the adsorption capacity and breakthrough curve. The result were as follows: 1. The BET surface area of coconut activated carbon was 658~1,010 m$^2$/g where as coconut shell carbon was 6.6 m$^2$/g. Coconut activated carbon increased the BET surface area and adsorption capacity in bottle-point isotherm. 2. The adsorption capacity of coconut activated carbon for trichloroethylene (TCE) was reduced in the presence of humic substance. 3. A decrease in particle size of activated carbon resulted in higher adsorption capacity and lower intraparticle diffusion coefficient. It is reflected not only as a decrease in Freudlich adsorption capacity value (K) but also as an increase in Freudlich exponenent value (1/n).
