This study investigated the quality characteristics of saccharified minor cereal gruel prepared with different grain kojis (rice, buckwheat, sorghum, adlay, and Italian millet koji). The moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and crude ash contents of raw materials showed ranges of 11.12 - 12.85; 5.81-16.24; 0.56 - 4.36, and 0.28 - 1.93%, respectively. The crude protein, crude lipid, and crude ash contents of the samples showed ranges of 1.64 to 2.44; 0.08 to 0.28, and 0.09 to 0.18%, respectively. The pH, L, a, and b values ranged from 6.11- 6.43; 58.72 - 65.96; 2.92 - 5.76, and 7.81- 9.42, respectively. The viscosities of saccharified minor cereal gruel prepared with different grain kojis were significantly (p<0.05) lower than the unsaccharified minor cereal gruel. After the saccharification, the soluble solids, glucose, and maltose content were significantly (p<0.05) increased, with ranges of $9.58-10.61^{\circ}Brix$; 0.64 - 0.90%, and 0.32 - 0.50%, respectively. A sensory evaluation indicated that minor cereal gruels saccharified using sorghum koji and adlay koji were more acceptable than unsaccharified minor cereal gruel. In conclusion, the cereal kojis could be used as a gruel processing method that would increase the sensory properties and nutritional values of gruels.
In order to establish the optimal soil moisture, seeding date and nitrogen fertilization, yield and its components grown at 3 different seeding dates and 2 nitrogen fertilizations were compared and analyzed in adaly(Coix lachyma-jobi L. var. mayuen). The results are summarized as follows: Heading date and maturity date were earlier in early seeding date than in late seeding date. Days to heading was shortened as the seeding date was late. Stem length, stem diameter, and tiller number were increased in irrigation than control, and were decreased as the seeding date was late. The top and the root dry weight were increased in irrigation than in control, and were decreased as the seeding date was late. Net photosynthetic rate was increased significantly in irrigation. Occurrance of leaf blight disease was much lower in irrigation than in control. 1000 grain weight and grain yield were higher in irrigation than in control, and were decreased as the seeding date was late. Rate of sterility was lower in irrigation than in control.
This study investigated the effects of the diet with Cucurbita moschata (CM), adlay seed (AS), and Cudrania tricuspidata leaf (CTL) mixed-powder on the visceral fat, fecal amount, and serum lipid profiles in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The mixed ratio of CM, AS, and CTL as a functional food ingredient was 1:1:1 on a weight basis. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet (D12492; 45 kcal fat) for 5 weeks during the first phase. In the second phase, which lasted 5 weeks, the rats were divided into six experimental groups. The groups were: a high-fat diet group as a control during the 10 weeks of experimental period; and a high-fat diet with 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30% mixed-powder supplement group. The adipose tissue (RFP, EFP) weights were significantly decreased in the 20% and 30% mixed-powder supplement groups than in the HFD group (p<0.05). The fecal weight produced by the 15%, 20%, and 30% mixed-powder supplement groups was significantly increased during the second phase compared to the first phase (p<0.05). In terms of serum lipids, TG (triglyceride) content was decreased in the 10% and 15% mixed-powder supplement groups. The blood glucose levels were significantly decreased in all experimental diet supplement groups than in the HFD group (p<0.05). The findings show that the high supplement groups could improve the visceral fat accumulation, fecal amount, and blood glucose content compared to the HFD group.
This experiment was carried out to establish effective weed control system in the cultivation of Coix lachryma-jobi L. The effect of annual weeds artificially transplanted on the growth of Coix lachryma-jobi L. were that the higher the density of weeds, the lower the yield considerably by reducing number of grains and tillers per plant. Among four weeds of Echinochloa crusgalli galli P. BEAUV., Digitaria sanguinalis $S_{COPOL}$., Chenopodium album L., and Portulaca oleracea L., weed of Portulaca oleracea L. reduced adlay yield most by 182.6kg/10a and it was judged to be the most injurious weed to adlay production. Among four weed control systems, which are one herbicide treatment, one herbicide treatment + one cultivating work with cultivator, two times cultivating work with cultivator and two times hand-weeding, the control system of 'one herbicide treatment + one cultivating work with cultivator' showed the lowest amount of weed growth by 7.34 weeds per $m^2$ in comparison with control plot of 35.00 weeds per $m^2$. Among four weed control systems, the system of 'two times hand-weeding' had much more amount of light penetration in adlay canopy with 791.9 mol than any other systems.
This research was conducted to investigate morpological and growth characteristics of 358 Coix lacryma-jopbi mayuen STAF collected in Korea. The test collections contained 76% medium wide-type leaf, 59% medium size-type seed, 34% large size-type seed, 70% elliptical-type shell, 50% brown shell color, 92% low stem color and hardness of seed coat averaged $3.4kg/cm^2$ with the range of $1.1{\sim}18.7kg/cm^2$. 24% adaptable plant height ranged from 156cm to 170cm, days to heading after seeding averaged 83.2% with the range of $74{\sim}94$ days, early maturating varietes was 24.9% below 80 days. Rate to leaf blight 48.5% with the range of $9{\sim}92%$ and rate to stem borer averaged 8% with the range of $0{\sim}17%$. The weight of 1000 seeds showed positive correlation with days to flowering and plant height and number of seeds per plant showed positive corrleation with percentage of ripness, but weight of 1000 seeds showed negative correlation with occurrence of leaf blight and stem borer plant. Therefore we are expecting useful germplasm and selectable index for effective breeding.
‘Johyun’ was a new adlay variety which was developed from three way crosses of (Suwon-6xOkayama)x UCN300-25 at the Northern Agricultural Research Station, Gyeonggi Province ARES. This variety had purple sheath and green leaf blade in primitive growth stage and green leaf and culm in heading stage. Colors of pistil and seed coat were milky-white and dark-brown, respectively. Plant height of Johyun was 179 cm and shortened 22 cm less than Yulmoo-1 which was tested by check variety. Johyun shortened 8 days of heading date and 15 days of ripening date compared with Yulmoo-1. Yield of Johyun was 320 kg/10a of hulled grains in three regional yield trials and 18% higher than Yulmoo-1. This variety was adaptable to single cropping in central and northern region of Korea.
'Sanggang' was a new adlay cultivar which was developed from the three way crosses of $(Hukuhane\;{\times}\;Suwon-6)\;{\times}$ Suwon-6 at the Northern Agricultural Research Station, Gyunggido ARES. This cultivar had green sheaf, dark-green leaf, green culm, milky white silk and darkbrown seedcoat. Sanggang shortened 10 days of heading date and 12 days of ripening time compared with Yulmoo 1. In the yield's conponent of Sanggang, the number of grains was by 56 grains less but ripening rate and 1,000 grain weight were higher by 6.5% and 20.1 g compared with Yulmoo 1, respectively. This cultivar showed moderate resistance to leaf blight. The yield of Sanggang was about 313 kg/10a of unpolished grain at ordinary cultivation. This cutivar showed about 17% and 27% higher yield in Yonchon Gyeonggi province and Cheongju Chungbuk province compared with the check variety respectively. This cultivar was adaptable to mono cropping in central and northern region of Korea.

Six types of mixed cereals powder were prepared using different mixing ratios of barley, proso millet, sorghum, and adlay, and their nutritional components and functionalities were analyzed. The mixed cereals powders contained high levels of crude protein. The free amino acid and mineral contents of Sample E were the highest among all the samples. Fructose, glucose, sucrose, and maltose were detected as the four major free sugars in all the mixed cereals powders, and Sample D had the highest amount of reducing sugar among all the samples. The total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents of Sample F were significantly higher than those of the other samples. Sample C showed the highest level of DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power. As for the ABTS radical scavenging activity, the $IC_{50}$ of Sample D was the lowest among all the samples, but did not significantly differ from that of Sample C. Therefore, we suggest 2:2:1:1 (in Sample D) as the best mixing ratio of barley, proso millet, sorghum, and adlay to produce a mixed cereals powder with excellent nutritional value and antioxidant activities.
This study was carried out to assess the safety of cereals and their products (20 species, 205 samples) distributed in Gyeonggi province by analyzing contamination levels such as exposure frequency of Aflatoxins and Deoxynivalenol (DON). Aflatoxins were detected in 16 (8%) samples in total with a range of 0.01~27.88 ${\mu}g/kg$, including 3 of 9 bake flour (33%), 2 of 6 dried corn (33%), 3 of 12 frying flour (25%) and 2 of 11 sorghum (18%). DON was found in 56 (27%) samples including 11 of 13 adlay (85%), 6 of 8 wheat (75%), 6 of 10 processed corn for popcorn (60%), 6 of 11 sorghum (55%) and 7 of 16 barley (44%) with a range of 2.2~754.4 ${\mu}g/kg$. In particular, both Aflatoxins and DON were detected in 8 samples (2 millet, 2 wheat, 1 sorghum, 1 adlay, 1 dried corn, 1 bake flour) simultaneously. As a result of this study, we found that an adult is exposed to Aflatoxins of $0.80({\times})10^{-3}{\mu}g/kg$ b.w./day and DON of 0.18 ${\mu}g/kg$ b.w./day. The quantity of exposure to DON amounted to 18.5 percentage level compared with PMTDI 1 ${\mu}g/kg$ b.w./day suggested on JECFA, therefore we can assess that the possibility of health risks by intake cereals distributed in Gyeonggi province is low. However the concentration of Aflatoxins in one dried corn was 27.88 ${\mu}g/kg$ which was over the maximum residue limits (MRL) suggested on internal and external level, the monitoring about mycotoxin should be conducted on continuously.
