  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships of mothers' parenting stress and young children's adjustment to the child care centers they attend. The subjects for this study comprised 401 young children from 1 to 4 years of age from 11 child care centers in C-si, Chungnam, and their mothers. The results of this study were as follows : First, there were no significant differences in the parenting stress of mothers related to whether they were working or not, the age of the children nor their gender Second, there were no significant differences in the adjustment of young children to their child care center related to their mothers' work status nor age of the children themselves. However, there was a significant difference in relation to the gender of the young children in that girls were better in their adjustment to the child care center than boys. Third, a negative correlation appeared between mothers' parenting stress and their young children's adjustment to the child care center in that the higher maternal parenting stress was, the greater the difficulties for their young children in their adjustment to the child care center. There were significant negatively correlations between most sub-factors of maternal parenting stress and the adjustment of those children to the child care center.

The subjects were 344 working mothers who were raising 19- to 42-month-old children and 106 class teachers in Seoul, Gyeong-gi and lncheon. Data analysis was done using the SPSS WIN 15.0 version an d the collected data were subjected to a descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ s post-test and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows : (a) children's adaptability to child-care centers varied with their sex, age, and the existence of siblings. Girls and children of higher age were more adaptable than boys and younger children. Children who have siblings were more adaptable compared to those who were the only child in the family. Also, children who were enrolled at a workplace provided child-care center were more adaptable than those who entered other kinds of child-care centers. (b) The teacher-child relationship influences the adjustment of children in a child-care center. It was found that the teacher-child relationship is the strongest indicator to predict how well the child will adjust to the child-care center.

Second, mother's temperament and mother's demand were positively correlated and the mother's demand was influenced by the mother's temperament. Third, mother's demand according to children's gender was indicated to differ significantly. Fourth, children's temperament and mother's demand were positively correlated and mother's demand was influenced by children's temperament. Subjects were selected nationwide from the Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Subjects were 54 cooperative children selected from among 126 returned children : they were older than 11 years of age and had experienced more than one day in out-of-home care between January 2002 and December 2003. Findings were: (1)children had such psychological adjustment symptoms as withdrawal, depression, or anxiety, rather than symptoms of misdeeds and aggression. (2) Level of self-esteem and re-abuse were the great influential factors in psycho-behavioral adjustment. This result shows that the processes of out-of-home care and returning home remain important issues for abused children.

  • Using data from an ongoing study of 170 children aged 4-6 years in low-income families, this study tests how mothers' parenting behaviors and teacher-child relationship influences the adjustment to child-care centers of young children. The mothers' parenting behaviors were measured by the mothers of surveyed children, while the teacher-child relationship and children's adjustment were rated by teachers. Measurements were recorded from using the Iowa Parent Behavior Inventory(Crase et al. 1987), Student-Teacher Relationship Scale(Pianta et al. 1995) and the Adjustment to Child-care Centers Scale(Lee 2004). The collected data was analyzed by hierarchical regression using the SPSS Program. Results indicate that mothers' parenting behaviors in the low-income families controlled characteristics of children and are positively associated with one area of early school adjustment, learning readiness. In other words, mothers who are more involved and demonstrate supportive parenting, have children with better learning readiness. The teacher-child relationship is strongly related to all areas of children's adjustment. The interaction effect of parenting behaviors and the teacher-child relationship on children's learning readiness is observed. These results highlight the importance of the teacher-child closeness as well as the quality of parenting behaviors during the preschool period for the low-income family in improving early school adjustment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ecological factors influencing school adjustment of adolescents from low-income families. Methods: Secondary data analysis was performed using data of 1,321 low-income adolescents in 123 regions found on the Survey on Service Satisfaction with Community Child Care Center. Results: The results of multi-level analysis identified the factors influencing school adjustment of low-income adolescents as follows: individual-level factors were gender, grade in school, and emotional problem; an interpersonal-level factor was family structure; organizational-level factors were length of time attending center and satisfaction with the service of the center; community-level factors were region and perception of community. Conclusion: The results suggest that low-income adolescents' adjustment to school is influenced not only by individual factors but also by diverse environmental factors. Community factors suggest that more education support systems and leisure facilities for adolescents need to be built in small and medium cities. Strategies to enhance positive perception of community are also needed for this population. Further, it is necessary to develop multi-level interventions to improve the school adjustment of adolescents from vulnerable social groups.
