  • Feasibility of optimizing Zwicker's loudness has been shown by using MSC/NASTRAN, SYSNOISE, and a semi-analytical design sensitivity by Wang and Kang. Design sensitivity analysis of Zwicker's loudness is developed by using ANSYS, COMET, and an adjoint variable method in order to reduce computation. A numerical example shows significant reduction of computation time for design sensitivity analysis.

  • In this study, preconditioned adjoint equations for the quasi one-dimensional Euler equations are developed, and their computational benefit at all speed is assessed numerically. The preconditioned adjoint equations are derived without any assumptions on the preconditioning matrix. The dissipation for Roe type numerical flux is also suggested to scale the dissipation term properly at low Mach numbers as well as at high Mach numbers. The new preconditioned method is validated against analytical solutions. The convergence characteristics over wide range of Mach numbers is evaluated. Finally, several inverse designs for the nozzle are conducted and the applicability of the method is demonstrated.

  • This paper presents a new self-adjoint material sensitivity formulation for optimal designs and inverse problems in the high frequency domain. The proposed method is based on the continuum approach using the augmented Lagrangian method. Using the self-adjoint formulation, there is no need to solve the adjoint system additionally when the goal function is a function of the S-parameter. In addition, the algorithm is more general than most previous approaches because it is independent of specific analysis methods or gridding techniques, thereby enabling the use of commercial EM simulators and various custom solvers. For verification, the method was applied to the several numerical examples of dielectric material reconstruction problems in the high frequency domain, and the results were compared with those calculated using the conventional method.

  • A mathematical methodology is proposed for designing nozzle hole shapes producing controlled geometric cavitation. The proposed methodology uses an unstructured RANS flow solver, with the ability to compute sensitivity derivatives via an adjoint algorithm. The adjoint formulation for the N-S equations is presented while variation of the turbulence viscosity is not taken into account during the geometry modifications. The sensitivities are calculated in a mode independently of the shape parameterisation. The method is used to develop and evaluate conceptual shapes for nozzle hole cavitation reduction. The localized region at the hole inlet producing cavitation, is parameterised using its radius of curvature, while a cost function is formulated to eliminate the negative pressures present at this location. Sensitivity derivatives are used to assess the dependence of the localized region on the minimum pressure, and to drive the geometry to the targeted shape. The results show that the computer model can provide nozzle hole entry shapes that produce predefined flow characteristics, and thus can be used as an inverse design tool for nozzle hole cavitation control.

  • In this paper we study Gergonne's point and its adjoint points of triangle using the principle of the lever. We prove existence of Gergonne's point and its adjoint points, suggest new proof method of a equality related with Gergonne's point. We find new equalities related with adjoint points of Gergonne's points, and prove these using the principle of the lever.

  • In the present paper, development of the three-dimensional (3D) computational code based on Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) for solving the multigroup forward/adjoint diffusion equation in both rectangular and hexagonal geometries is reported. Linear approximation of shape functions in the GFEM with unstructured tetrahedron elements is used in the calculation. Both criticality and fixed source calculations may be performed using the developed GFEM-3D computational code. An acceptable level of accuracy at a low computational cost is the main advantage of applying the unstructured tetrahedron elements. The unstructured tetrahedron elements generated with Gambit software are used in the GFEM-3D computational code through a developed interface. The forward/adjoint multiplication factor, forward/adjoint flux distribution, and power distribution in the reactor core are calculated using the power iteration method. Criticality calculations are benchmarked against the valid solution of the neutron diffusion equation for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)-3D and Water-Water Energetic Reactor (VVER)-1000 reactor cores. In addition, validation of the calculations against the $P_1$ approximation of the transport theory is investigated in relation to the liquid metal fast breeder reactor benchmark problem. The neutron fixed source calculations are benchmarked through a comparison with the results obtained from similar computational codes. Finally, an analysis of the sensitivity of calculations to the number of elements is performed.

  • An aerodynamic design method has been developed by using a three-dimensional unstructured Euler code and an adjoint code with a discrete approach. The resulting adjoint code is applied to a wing design problem of super-sonic transport with a wing-body-nacelle configuration. Hicks-Henne shape functions are adopted far the surface geometry perturbation, and the elliptic equation method is employed fer the interior grid modification during the design process. Interior grid sensitivities are neglected except those for design parameters associated with nacelle translation. The Sequential Quadratic Programming method is used to minimize the drag with constraints on the lift and airfoil thickness. Successful design results confirm validity and efficiency of the present design method.

  • This paper describes a technique for complete identification of a two-dimensional scattering object and multiple objects immersed in air using microwaves where the scatterers are assumed to be a homogenous dielectric medium. The employed technique consists of initially retrieving the shape and position of the scattering object using a linear sampling method and then determining the electric permittivity and conductivity of the scatterer using adjoint sensitivity analysis. Incident waves are assumed to be TM (Transverse Magnetic) plane waves. This inversion algorithm results in high computational speed and efficiency, and it can be generalized for any scatterer structure. Also, this method is robust with respect to noise. The numerical results clearly show that this hybrid approach provides accurate reconstructions of various objects.

  • A method for performing two-dimensional lift-constraint drag minimization in inviscid compressible flows on unstructured meshes is developed. Sensitivities of objective function with respect to the design variables are efficiently obtained by using a continuous adjoint method. In addition, parallel algorithm is used in multi-point design optimization to enhance the computational efficiency. The characteristics of single-point and multi-point optimization are examined, and the comparison of these two method is presented.
