  • The full depth excavation induces couple of technical and social problems like increase of construction cost and time for excavation and backfill, increase of public complains and delay of traffic, and so force. In order to overcome these problems, lots of laboratory tests were carried out for sewer pipeline of maintenance materials with trenchless methods. The testing materials are PVC strip and then the lab tests were followed by Korean Standard. We will treat the structure safety and pipe integrity of PVC profile more excellent than the profile have application to SPR. There is no side-effect to process and to satisfy the criteria of tensile strength, impact strength and softening temperature. The profile with resin adhesive showed no leakage of water at specific pressure.

  • Alloy 617 is considered as a candidate Ni-based superalloy for the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) of a very high-temperature gas reactor (VHTR) because of its good creep strength and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. Helium is used as a coolant in a VHTR owing to its high thermal conductivity, inertness, and low neutron absorption. However, helium inevitably includes impurities that create an imbalance in the surface reactivity at the interface of the coolant and the exposed materials. As the Alloy 617 has been exposed to high temperatures at $950^{\circ}C$ in the impure helium environment of a VHTR, the degradation of material is accelerated and mechanical properties decreased. The high-temperature strength, creep, and corrosion properties of the structural material for an IHX are highly important to maintain the integrity in a harsh environment for a 60 year period. Therefore, an alloy superior to alloy 617 should be developed. In this study, the mechanical and high-temperature corrosion properties for Ni-Cr alloys fabricated in the laboratory were evaluated as a function of the grain boundary strengthening and alloying elements. The ductility increased and decreased by increasing the amount of Mo and Cr, respectively. Surface oxide was detached during the corrosion test, when Al was not added to alloy. However the alloy with Al showed improved oxide adhesive property without significant degradation and mechanical property. Aluminum seems to act as an anti-corrosive role in the Ni-based alloy.

  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated the color stabilities of two computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) blocks and a nanofill composite resin and the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) between the materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twelve specimens of 4 mm height were prepared for both Lava Ultimate (L) and Vita Enamic (E) CAD/CAM blocks. Half of the specimens were thermocycled (10,000 cycle, 5° to 55℃) for each material. Both thermocycled and non-thermocycled specimens were surface treated with one of the three different methods (Er,Cr:YSGG laser, bur, or control). For each surface treatment group, one of the thermocycled and one of non-thermocycled specimens were restored using silane (Ceramic Primer II), universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal), and nanofill composite resin of 4-mm height (Filtek Ultimate). The other specimens were restored with the same procedure without using silane. For each group, 1 × 1 × 8 mm bar specimens were prepared using a microcutting device. Bar specimens were thermocycled (10,000 cycle, 5° to 55℃) and microtensile tests were performed. Staining of the materials in coffee solution was also compared using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, t-test and post-hoc Scheffe tests. RESULTS. µTBS were found similar between the thermocycled and non-thermocycled groups (P>.05). The highest µTBS (20.818 MPa) was found in the non-thermocycled, bur-ground, silane-applied E group. Silane increased µTBS at some E groups (P<.05). Composite resin specimens showed more staining than CAD/CAM blocks (P<.05). CONCLUSION. CAD/CAM blocks can be repaired with composite resins after proper surface treatments. Using silane is recommended in repair process. Color differences may be shown between CAD/CAM blocks and the nanofill composite after a certain time period.

  • This study examines the preparation and characterization of Kenaf/Starch bio-composites used as filler and a matrix. Kenaf was cultivated in Chung-ju in Korea, and the Kenaf/Starch bio-composites were prepared under various conditions of kenaf fiber length (1-5 centimeters); the content of Kenaf fiber was 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, and the number of composite layers (one-four). Depending on the formation conditions of Kenaf/Starch composites, the physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, and the young modulus of the Kenaf/Starch composites were measured. In addition, we measured the SEM cross-section images in order to investigate the interfacial adhesion properties of fractured surfaces. As a result, the tensile strength and elongation of the Kenaf/Starch composites were highest in the molding conditions of a hot press at $120^{\circ}C$, 3000PSI of pressure, and for 30 minute periods. The result of measuring the physical properties of the composites manufactured by varying the content of Kenaf fiber when the content of Kenaf fiber was 30% as well the physical properties of the Kenaf/Starch composite was found desirable. It was found that the physical properties improved with more overlapped layers in the composites manufactured by varying the number of overlapped layers. Through the measuring of the SEM cross-section images, we found that the interfacial adhesion state between the filler and matrix of Kenaf/Starch composite greatly affects the physical properties.

  • The effect of size of SiC particles and additive Mg content on the mechanical properties and wear characteristics were investigated for the SiCp/AC8A composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration process. Results showed that the hardness and the bending strength increased with decreasing the size of SiC particle. By increasing the Mg content the hardness of SiCp/AC8A composites increased due to the hard reaction products, however the bending strength decreased by formation of coarse precipitates and high porosity level. The SiCp/AC8A composites exhibited about 6 times higher wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity and as increasing the particle size, wear resistance was improved. The major wear mechanical of SiCp/AC8A composites exhibited the abrasive wear at low to high sliding velocity whereas AC8A alloy showed adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.

  • In order to characterize the adhesive properties and failure mechanisms of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films of two different thicknesses (130 nm and $1.2{\mu}m$), deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition on a Si substrate, scratch testing with a micro-indenter ($12.5{\mu}m$ tip radius) was performed under a linearly increasing load. These scratch tests were conducted under the same test conditions for both films. The critical load of each film was estimated from the scratch test results, based on a sharp increase in the coefficient of friction and a clear distinction of failure modes. The critical load was the basis for evaluating the adhesion strength of the films, and the $1.2{\mu}m-thick$ DLC film had superior adhesion strength. For better understanding of the failure modes, the following analyses were conducted: friction behavior and scratch tracks analysis using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and 3-D profilometry. The scratch test results showed that failure modes were related to the thickness of the films. The 130 nm-thick DLC film underwent cohesive failure modes (cracks and chipping) before reaching to a gross failure stage. On the other hand, the thicker DLC film ($1.2{\mu}m-thick$) did not exhibit micro cracks before a sudden gross failure of the film together with the evidence of cracking and chipping of the Si substrate.

  • Strength and failure of composite-to-aluminum rivetted, bonded, and rivet/bonding hybrid single-lap joints were investigated by experiment. A total of 82 joint specimens were tested with 3 different overlap lengths and 2 types of stacking sequence. FM73m adhesive film and NAS9308-4-03 rivet were used for hybrid joints. While failure loads of the bonded and hybrid joints increased as the overlap length increased, failure loads of the rivetted joints were not affected by the overlap length. Effect of the stacking sequence was not remarkable in the simple bonded or rivetted joints. Failure loads of the hybrid joints, however, showed the maximum of 30% difference depending on the stacking sequence. Major failure mode of the bonded and hybrid joints was the delamination of the composite adherend and failure mode of riveted joints was the rivet failure with local bearing.

  • The study attempted to find out any effect to prevent photo aging of epoxy resin used for conservation by way of adding UV stabilizer, one of plastic additives. Specimens were made by adding HALS and UVA UV stabilizer as each concentration to 3 kinds of epoxy resin, which are most frequently used for artifacts joining and restoration process, and aging effects were investigated through Color change, SEM, contact angle, FTIR analysis during UV aging experiments. Last, usage suitability was checked when UV stabilizer was added through Universal Tensile strength tester. In result, it is impossible to prevent decomposition of chemical structure in spite of adding UV stabilizer but in the case of epoxy A and R, it is believed that photo aging such as yellowing or crack can be minimized without giving a big influence to adhesive strength of epoxy resin through adding less than 0.1% of UVA. It is expected that above will solve photo aging problem of epoxy resin used for joining and restoration of artifacts and will extend its life as joining and restoration materials.

  • The waterborne acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive in the basis of butylacylate (BA) and 2-Ethylhexylacrylate (2-EHA) was synthesized and the methyl methacrylate (MMA) have been used to give the rigidity perfroamce. The polymreric latex was synthesized using butyl acrylate (BA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and each 1, 2, 3% of various functional monomers. The dimethyl-2-imidazlidon acrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate was used in order to increase the wetting properties of acrylic emulsion. To study of properties of functional monomer, The polymreric latex was synthesized various functional monomers each 1, 2, 3%. The 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate showed the best properties. Latex with acrylic acid and dimethyl-2-imidazlidon acrylate had good peel strength, holding power, but it showed that they didn't separate from adhered cleanly by weak cohesion strength. The adhesion performance was increased by increasing amount of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate however latexes with upper 7% 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate showed that the properties of PSA decreased.

  • Objective: With the introduction of third-generation light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in dental practice, it is necessary to compare their bracket-bonding effects, safety, and efficacy with those of the second-generation units. Methods: In this study, 80 extracted human premolars were randomly divided into eight groups of 10 samples each. Metal or polycrystalline ceramic brackets were bonded on the teeth using second- or third-generation LED light-curing units (LCUs), according to the manufacturers' instructions. The shear bond strengths were measured using the universal testing machine, and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) was scored by assessing the residual resin on the surfaces of debonded teeth using a scanning electron microscope. In addition, curing times were also measured. Results: The shear bond strengths in all experimental groups were higher than the acceptable clinical shear bond strengths, regardless of the curing unit used. In both LED LCU groups, all ceramic bracket groups showed significantly higher shear bond strengths than did the metal bracket groups except the plasma emulation group which showed no significant difference. When comparing units within the same bracket type, no differences in shear bond strength were observed between the second- and third-generation unit groups. Additionally, no significant differences were observed among the groups for the ARI. Conclusions: The bracket-bonding effects and ARIs of second- and third-generation LED LCUs showed few differences, and most were without statistical significance; however, the curing time was shorter for the second-generation unit.
