  • Background The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between the 2-dimensional (2D) extent of orbital defects and the 3-dimensional (3D) volume of herniated orbital content in patients with an orbital wall fracture. Methods This retrospective study was based on the medical records and radiologic data of 60 patients from January 2014 to June 2016 for a unilateral isolated orbital wall fracture. They were classified into 2 groups depending on whether the fracture involved the inferior wall (group I, n=30) or the medial wall (group M, n=30). The 2D area of the orbital defect was calculated using the conventional formula. The 2D extent of the orbital defect and the 3D volume of herniated orbital content were measured with 3D image processing software. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the correlations between the 2D and 3D parameters. Results Varying degrees of positive correlation were found between the 2D extent of the orbital defects and the 3D herniated orbital volume in both groups (Pearson correlation coefficient, 0.568-0.788; $R^2=32.2%-62.1%$). Conclusions Both the calculated and measured 2D extent of the orbital defects showed a positive correlation with the 3D herniated orbital volume in orbital wall fractures. However, a relatively large volume of herniation (>$0.9cm^3$) occurred not infrequently despite the presence of a small orbital defect (<$1.9cm^2$). Therefore, estimating the 3D volume of the herniated content in addition to the 2D orbital defect would be helpful for determining whether surgery is indicated and ensuring adequate surgical outcomes.

  • Entry and exits of the rest area are sections where designed speed can be rapidly change and also a weak traffic safety section. In addition, two tasks can be performed simultaneously at entry of the rest area, particularly searching for deceleration and parking spaces/parking sides etc. Thus, design criteria is required in order to procure the stability of accessed vehicle. In case of Korea, geometric structure design criteria of entry facilities, such as toll-gate, interchange, junction etc was established. However there are no presence in a detailed standards for geometric structure of the rest area which affiliated road facilities. In this study, Derive problems in regards to the entry of geometric structure of resting areas by utilizing a sight survey and an investigation research of traffic accidents. The survey was targeting 135 general service areas. After Classifying the design section of resting areas' entry as well as derive design elements on each section, a speed measurement by targeting entry of rest areas and car behavior surveys were performed, then each element's minimum standard was derived through the analyses. According to the speeds at the starting/end point of entrance connector road, the minimum length of the entrance connector road is decided as 40m using Slowing-down length formula and based on the driving pattern, the range of the junction setting angle of the entrance connector road is defined as $12^{\circ}{\sim}17^{\circ}$. Suggest improvement plans for existing rest areas that can be applied realistically. This should be corresponded to the standards of entry and exit of developed rest areas.

  • Soyangin-Hyeongbangpaedok-san(SHBPDS) is a herbal formula used for the common cold or upper respiratory illness. In order to investigate the effect of SHBPDS, mice were orally administered with SHBPDS alcohol extract for 7 days followed by intravenous anti-CD3 injection. In addition, splenocytes and CD4 T cells were cultured with SHBPDS in response to anti-CD3 in vitro and cytokines and transcription factors were evaluated. In vivo treatment with SHBPDS significantly augmented the expressions of the percentage of CD4 T cells and CD 69, an indicator of early T cell activation. Serum levels of IL-4 were significantly increased but those of IFN-${\gamma}$ and IL-2 did not reach statistical significance. The expressions of IFN-${\gamma}$ and T-bet mRNA were significantly downregulated in SHBPDS treated mice while those of IL-4 and C-Maf were significantly upregulated. In vitro stimulation of splenocytes and CD4 T cells by SHBPDS resulted in a reduction in IFN-${\gamma}$ secretion and STAT4 activity. The IL-4 releases from both cells were slightly reduced, but STAT6 activity was rather increased. In conclusion, SHBPDS exerted an inhibition in the expression of IFN-${\gamma}$, T-bet and STAT4 while IL-4, C-Maf and STAT6 were increased. Further studies are required to examine its pharmacological effects using more appropriate animal experiments.

  • Studies on mathematically gifted students have been conducted following Krutetskii. There still exists a necessity for a more detailed research on how these students' mathematical competence is actually displayed during the problem solving process. In this study, it was attempted to analyse the algebraic thinking process in the problem solving a peg puzzle in which 4 mathematically gifted students, who belong to the upper 0.01% group in their grade of elementary school in Korea. They solved and generalized the straight line peg puzzle. Mathematically gifted elementary school students had the tendency to find a general structure using generic examples rather than find inductive rules. They did not have difficulty in expressing their thoughts in letter expressions and in expressing their answers in written language; and though they could estimate general patterns while performing generalization of two factors, it was revealed that not all of them can solve the general formula of two factors. In addition, in the process of discovering a general pattern, it was confirmed that they prefer using diagrams to manipulating concrete objects or using tables. But as to whether or not they verify their generalization results using generalized concrete cases, individual difference was found. From this fact it was confirmed that repeated experiments, on the relationship between a child's generalization ability and his/her behavioral pattern that verifies his/her generalization result through application to a concrete case, are necessary.

  • The effects of fermentation agent and fermentation temperature on the quality of Bori-sangoedduk We examined the effects of fermentation agent and fermentation temperature on the quality characteristics of Bori-sangoedduk a traditional dduk(rice cake) from Jeju, Korea. Bori-sangoedduk was prepared by mixing wheat flour, barely flour, and Borisul or Takju as the fermentation agent the mixture was then fermented at 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}$C. for 3 hr, and steamed. The L- value of the Takju group was higher than that of the Borisul group, and the samples fermented at $30^{\circ}$C in each group had higher than L-values than those fermented at $35^{\circ}$C and $40^{\circ}$C . The a- and b-values did not differ significantly by the fermentation agents and fermentation temperatures. The loaf volume of the Borisul group was higher than that of the Takju group however, there were no significant differences according to fermentation temperature. The values of hardness, springiness, and cohesiveness were lower in the Borisul group than in the Takju group due to a greater number of pores and surface cracks. Hardness, springiness, and cohesiveness values were highest at fermentation temperatures of 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}$C , respectively, in both groups, compared to samples at other temperatures. In the acceptance test, the Takju group was preferred over the Borisul group for appearance, texture, taste, flavor, and overall preference. There were also statistically significant preferences in taste, flavor, and overall preference for samples fermented at $40^{\circ}$C , in both groups, compared to those fermented at $30^{\circ}$C and $35^{\circ}$C. In the descriptive test, there were no differences in color according to fermentation agent and fermentation temperature, however, the Takju group was shinier than the Borisul group. In addition, the Takju group was harder and springier than the Borisul group, and had less sour taste and flavor than the Borisul group. Finally, in terms of overall preference, we found that Bori-sangoedduk made with Takju and fermented at $40^{\circ}$C for 3 hr was the best formula, due particularly to its taste and flavor.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physicochemical and sensory evaluation properties of Garaetteok changed with non-glutinous at different ratios germinated brown rice(GBR). Changes in the moisture content of GBR occurred with increasing non-glutinous levels of(1~3%) increase in the level. The color value decreased by with increasing the GBR, whereas the and b values were both increased. As the result of the measurement using the texture analyzer, hardness, cohesiveness, gumniness, and chewiness of Garaetteok tended to decreased in proportion to the amount of GBR in the formula. In the sensory evaluation, 40% GBR and 60% GBR in color, hardness, springiness, chewiness and overall acceptability than that of add compared to 100% and 80% GBR. And Garaetteok with 40% and 60% GBR showed the highest overall acceptability scores in overall acceptability. Therefore, we concluded that the addition of GBR on to Garaetteok improved the sensory characteristics as well as and delayed the retrogradation.

  • Objectives: The object of this study is to observe the cognition and motor function recovery effects of Joojakwhan (JJW), a traditional Korean poly-herbal formula for treating various neuropsychiatric diseases such as dementia, for the mildly stroke rats, with 60 minutes of reperfusion transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). Methods: In the present study, 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg of JJW were orally administered, once per day for 10 continuous days 2 hours after the tMCAO. The body weight changes, infarct sizes under 2% 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) stain, sensorimotor functions and cognitive motor behavior tests were serially monitored with cerebral caspase-3 and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-immunoreactivities and histopathological changes. The effects of tMCAO on sensorimotor functions were evaluated by using of limb placing and body-swing tests, and the cognitive motor behaviors were also observed with water maze tests. Results: From the results of tMCAO, with marked decreases of body weights, disorders of sensorimotor functions increases the limb placing test scores, and decrease the numbers and percentages of body swings to the ipsilateral sides. The cognitive motor behaviors increases the distances and time to reach the escape platform which included the inhibitions of the decreases with repeated trials that were observed with focal cerebral cortex infarct volumes. In addition, the marked increases of the atrophy, numbers of degeneration, caspase-3- and PARP-immunoreactive cells around peri-infarct ipsilateral cerebral cortex were also observed in tMCAO controls when compared with the sham control rats, respectively. Conclusions: The results obtained from this study suggest that oral administrations of JJW indicate obvious cognitions and motor function recoveries of the rats with tMCAO, mild strokes, which are mediated by neuro-protective effects through known antioxidant effects of components.

  • In order to investigate the types of enteral nutrition formulas currently used in hospitals and evaluate and categorize the commercially prepared enteral nutrition formulas formulas available in the domestic market, we asked dietitians working in 6 hospitals in Seoul to complete the questionnaire and obtained compositional characteristics of 12 commercially prepared enteral nutrition formulas. The average proportion of patients receiving the commercially prepared enteral nutrition formulas(60.6%) was greater than that of patients receiving the in-hospital preparations(31.9%). In the group of patients receiving the in-hospital prepared formulas, the enteral feeding was mainly administered orally, whereas, in the group of patients receiving the commercially prepared formulas, tube feeding was the primary route of formula administration. In both groups, however, a greater proportion of patients received the formulas as total replacements of their meals and for the purpose of dietary supplementation. On the basis of major criteria for evaluation of the commercially prepared enteral nutrition formulas, the 6 products out of the 9 nutritionally complete products formulated for the purpose of dietary supplementation were grouped into the same category(standard protein, caloric density of 1kcal/ml, and tube/oral), so they were considered therapeutically comparable. However, the remaining 3 products were different in protein content(high protein) or route of administration(tube only). Of the 3 nutritionally complete products formulated specifically for the purpose of dietary therapy, 2 products were formulated for patients with renal disease, and the one product was formulated for diabetic patients. Therefore, the data in this study showed that the commercially prepared enteral nutriton formulas became an important part of the enteral nutrition for hospitalized patients in Korea, but the domestic market has not yet generated a wide variety of the formulas, not providing many choices for clinicians to manage the diets for their patients. The results of this study would be helpful for clinicians in choosing appropriate products for their patients, for manufactures in developing new products, and for regulatory authorities to establish the regulation for the broad group of heterogeneous products that are marketed and will be developed as medical foods. In addition, the process of maintaining the categories for evaluation of the commercially prepared enteral nutrition formulas should be dynamic because new products may not reasonably fit any of the existing categories.

  • This paper presents research result to study the change of structural capacity of reinforced concrete beams with various shear reinforcement ratios after damage by fire load. In addition, fundamental data are given in order to predict the strength variation of RC member due to fire damage by evaluating the previous calculation method codified in codes. Nine RC beam specimens were made and exposed to the fire controled by the standard fire curve. And the structural capacity was evaluated through a failure test under simple support condition. Previous code formula, ACI code and Eurocode were reviewed and used for the calculation of the strength of specimens damaged by fire. From the test, RC beam specimens exhibited very brittle failure when it exposed to fire controled by standard fire curve during more than one hour. And this failure pattern tended to be more serious when shear reinforcement ratio decreased or fire loading duration increased. From the evaluation of the calculation process in code, the change of strength due to fire can be properly predicted if the damage of materials is well defined.

  • Retinal bipolar cells according to the light stimulus respond to potential slowly, emit neurotransmitter release(glutamine acid) to depend on membrane potential. In this paper, the several physiological information on neurotransmitter release mechanism in the presynaptic terminal of the ON-type bipolar cells are incorporated into the formula model. The source of fast components and slow components of neurotransmitter release was arranged in parallel, this model was able to reproduce the membrane potential and intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration dependence of neurotransmitter release faithfully. In addition, because the fast releasable components of neurotransmitter was represented by the membrane potential dependence of trapezoid type, whereas the slow releasable components was represented by the membrane potential dependence of a bell type, $Ca^{2+}$ concentration rise in intracellular is suppressed by $Ca^{2+}$ buffer to reduce slow releasable components, it was confirmed that the membrane potential dependence of neurotransmitter release was characteristics of a trapezoid type. And, in the light response of ON type bipolar cell, the result of the simulation of the neurotransmitter release caused by the components of transient and persistent was that the start of light response occurred the fast release of neurotransmitter, it was confirmed that the transient component and persistent component of the light response occurred the slow release. It was confirmed that the later of persistent component of the light response occurred due to the continuous release by synaptic vesicle supplemented from the storage pool.
