Inverse problem in electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is highly ill-posed therefore prior information is used to mitigate the ill-posedness. Regularization methods are often adopted in solving EIT inverse problem to have satisfactory reconstruction performance. In solving the EIT inverse problem, iterative Gauss-Newton method is generally used due to its accuracy and fast convergence. However, its performance is still suboptimal and mainly depends on the selection of regularization parameter. Although, there are few methods available to determine the regularization parameter such as L-curve method they are sometimes not applicable for all cases. Moreover, regularization parameter is a scalar and it is fixed during iteration process. Therefore, in this paper, a novel method is used to determine the regularization parameter to improve reconstruction performance. Conductivity norm is calculated at each iteration step and it used to obtain the regularization parameter which is a diagonal matrix in this case. The proposed method is applied to human thorax imaging and the reconstruction performance is compared with traditional methods. From numerical results, improved performance of proposed method is seen as compared to conventional methods.

In this paper, we propose a very efficient method which reconstructs the high resolution surface from a set of unorganized points. Our method is based on the level set method using adaptive octree. We start with the surface reconstruction model proposed in [20]. In [20], they introduced a very fast and efficient method which is different from the previous methods using the level set method. Most existing methods[21, 22] employed the time evolving process from an initial surface to point cloud. But in [20], they considered the surface reconstruction process as an elliptic problem in the narrow band including point cloud. So they could obtain very speedy method because they didn't have to limit the time evolution step by the finite speed of propagation. However, they implemented that model just on the uniform grid. So they still have the weakness that it needs so much memories because of being fulfilled only on the uniform grid. Their algorithm basically solves a large linear system of which size is the same as the number of the grid in a narrow band. Besides, it is not easy to make the width of band narrow enough since the decision of band width depends on the distribution of point data. After all, as far as it is implemented on the uniform grid, it is almost impossible to generate the surface on the high resolution because the memory requirement increases geometrically. We resolve it by adapting octree data structure[12, 11] to our problem and by introducing a new redistancing algorithm which is different from the existing one[19].

Time-encoded imagers (TEI) are important class of instruments to search for potential radioactive sources to prevent illicit transportation and trafficking of nuclear materials and other radioactive sources. The energy of the radiation cannot be known in advance due to the type and shielding of source is unknown in practice. However, the response function of the time-encoded imagers is related to the energy of neutrons or gamma-rays. An improved image reconstruction method based on MLEM was proposed to correct for the energy induced response difference. In this method, the count vector versus time was first smoothed. Then, the preset response function was adaptively corrected according to the measured counts. Finally, the smoothed count vector and corrected response were used in MLEM to reconstruct the source distribution. A one-dimensional dual-particle time-encode imager was developed and used to verify the improved method through imaging an Am-Be neutron source. The improvement of this method was demonstrated by the image reconstruction results. For gamma-ray and neutron images, the angular resolution improved by 17.2% and 7.0%; the contrast-to-noise ratio improved by 58.7% and 14.9%; the signal-to-noise ratio improved by 36.3% and 11.7%, respectively.

TMN5 has been used to evaluate the performance of H.263, the ITU-T/LBC standard of moving picture coding. As DCT is used as transform coding methods in TMN5, blocking effect exists seriously in reconstruction picture at low bit rate. In this pater, DWT is substituted for DCT and adaptive quantizer is designed while the structure of TMN5 is maintained to be excellent in the transplantation of conventional system. It has shown that average PSNR is reduced by 0.35dB in luminance but increased by 2dB in chrominance comparing with that of TMN5. As block effect is reduced in reconstruction picture, the subjective picture quality is better than that of TMN5. Picture drop is, also, reduced because much more frames are transmitted at same bit rate.
Purpose: Adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) technique is a reconstruction method of CT image using statistical noise modeling which is known to reduce image noise and to preserve image quality despite reducing radiation dose. The aim of this study is to evaluate images using ASIR on bone SPECT/CT which is primarily performed in our hospital. Materials and Methods: We compared the images of applied ASIR (ASIR level: 20-80%) and none ASIR by changing the mA based on 120 kVp, 100 mA using Discovery NM/CT 670 (GE, U.S.A). First, we evaluated attenuation correction in SPECT image by changing the ASIR level using Anthropomorphic phantom. Second, we compared the contrast to noise ratio (CNR), image noise and spatial resolution in CT image using ACR phantom. Third, after selecting the ASIR level applicable patient using lower torso phantom, we examined 2 patients who followed up bone SPECT/CT and we performed blind test. Results: The degree of attenuation correction in SPECT image showed no significant difference between applied ASIR and none ASIR (P>0.05). When applied ASIR, the noise of CT image were reduced at least 17 up to 52% by changing the mA. The CNR of image with ASIR was maintained more than 0.8 at 40 mA (ASIR 60%) while those without ASIR showed 0.42 at standard 40 mA. In comparison of the high contrast object, we distinguished 12 line pairs/cm at 40 mA regardless of appling ASIR. Comparison of the patients image applied ASIR level 60% (40 mA) which found out by spine image of lower torso phantom showed no signigicant difference between applied ASIR and none ASIR in blind test. The CTDIvol and DLP for applied ASIR 60% showed decreased by 60%, 60% on average than using standard mA. Conclusion: The study show that the radiation dose in SPECT/CT using ASIR can be reduced despite degradation of SPECT and CT images. In addition, higher ASIR level could be possibly applied characteristics of SPECT/CT that region of interest is limited to bone.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide a promising approach to monitor the physical environments, to prolong the network lifetime by exploiting the mutual correlation among sensor readings has become a research focus. In this paper, we design a hierarchical network framework which guarantees layered-compression. Meanwhile, a data sorting-based adaptive spatial compression scheme (DS-ASCS) is proposed to explore the spatial correlation among signals. The proposed scheme reduces the amount of data transmissions and alleviates the network congestion. It also obtains high compression performance by sorting original sensor readings and selectively discarding the small coefficients in transformed matrix. Moreover, the compression ratio of this scheme varies according to the correlation among signals and the value of adaptive threshold, so the proposed scheme is adaptive to various deploying environments. Finally, the simulation results show that the energy of sorted data is more concentrated than the unsorted data, and the proposed scheme achieves higher reconstruction precision and compression ratio as compared with other spatial compression schemes.

In the cluster mechanism of the wireless sensor network, the network lifetime is affected by how cluster heads are selected. One of the representative clustering mechanisms, the low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH), selects cluster heads periodically, resulting in high energy consumption in cluster reconstruction. On the other hand, the adaptive clustering algorithm via waiting timer (ACAWT) proposes a non-periodic re-clustering mechanism that reconstructs clusters if the remaining energy level of a cluster head reaches a given threshold. In this paper, we propose a re-clustering mechanism that uses multiple remaining node energy levels and does re-clustering when the remaining energy level of a cluster head reaches one level lower. Also, in determining cluster heads, both of the number of neighbor nodes and the remaining energy level are considered so that cluster heads can be more evenly placed. From the simulations based on the Qualnet simulator, we validate that our proposed mechanism outperforms ACAWT in terms of the network lifetime.
The patient dose incurred from diagnostic procedures during advanced radiotherapy has become an important issue. Many researchers in medical physics are using computational simulations to calculate complex parameters in experiments. However, extended computation times make it difficult for personal computers to run the conventional Monte Carlo method to simulate radiological images with high-flux photons such as images produced by computed tomography (CT). To minimize the computation time without degrading imaging quality, we applied a deterministic adaptation to the Monte Carlo calculation and verified its effectiveness by simulating CT image reconstruction for an image evaluation phantom (Catphan; Phantom Laboratory, New York NY, USA) and a human-like voxel phantom (KTMAN-2) (Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, USA). For the deterministic adaptation, the relationship between iteration numbers and the simulations was estimated and the option to simulate scattered radiation was evaluated. The processing times of simulations using the adaptive method were at least 500 times faster than those using a conventional statistical process. In addition, compared with the conventional statistical method, the adaptive method provided images that were more similar to the experimental images, which proved that the adaptive method was highly effective for a simulation that requires a large number of iterations-assuming no radiation scattering in the vicinity of detectors minimized artifacts in the reconstructed image.

The method of accumulating a sequence of focused images is usually used for reconstruction of 3D object\\`s shape. To acquire a focused image, the conventional methods must calculate the focus measures of all pixels resulting in a long measurement time. This paper proposes a new method of reducing the computation time spent for deciding the focused pixels in the input image, which predicts the area in the image to calculate the focus measure based on a priori information on the object to be measured. The proposed algorithm estimates the area to consider in the next measurement based on the focused area in the present measurement. As the focus measure, Laplacian measure was used in this paper and the experiments have shown that the preposed algorithm may significantly reduce the calculation time. Although, as implied, this algorithm can be applied to only simple objects at this stage, advanced representation schemes will eliminate the restrictions on application domain.
Purpose: The purpose of this study has attempted to evaluate and compare the image evaluation and exposure dose by respectively applying Filtered Back Projection(FBP), the existing test method, and Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction(ASIR) with different values of tube voltage during the Low Dose Computed Tomography(LDCT). Materials and Methods: With the image reconstruction method as basis, Chest Phantom was utilized with the FBP and ASIR set at 10%, 20% respectively, and the change of Tube Voltage (100kVp, 120kVp). For image evaluation, Back ground noise, Signal to Noise ratio(SNR) and Contrast to Noise ratio(CNR) were measured, and, for dose evaluation, CTDIvol and DLP were measured respectively. The statistical analysis was tested with SPSS(ver. 22.0), followed by ANOVA Test conducted after normality test and homogeneity test. (p<0.05). Results: In terms of image evaluation, there was no outstanding difference in Ascending Aorta(AA) SNR and Infraspinatus Muscle(IM) SNR with the different values of ASIR application(p<0.05), but a significant difference with the different amount of tube voltage(p>0.05). Also, there wasn't noticeable change in CNR with ASIR and different amount of Tube Voltage (p<0.05). However, in terms of dose evaluation, CTDIvol and DLP showed contrasting results(p<0.05). In terms of CTDIvol, the measured values with the same tube voltage of 120kVp were 2.6mGy with No-ASIR and 2.17mGy with 20%-ASIR respectively, decreased by 0.43mGy, and the values with 100kVp were 1.61mGy with No-ASIR and 1.34mGy with 20%-ASIR, decreased by 0.27mGy. In terms of DLP, the measured values with 120kVp were $103.21mGy{\cdot}cm$ with No-ASIR and $85.94mGy{\cdot}cm$ with 20%-ASIR, decreased by $17.27mGy{\cdot}cm$(about 16.7%), and the values with 100kVp were $63.84mGy{\cdot}cm$ with No-ASIR and $53.25mGy{\cdot}cm$ with 20%-ASIR, a decrease by $10.62mGy{\cdot}cm$(about 16.7%). Conclusion: At lower tube voltage, the rate of dose significantly decreased, but the negative effects on image evaluation was shown due to the increase of noise. For the future, through the result of the experiment, it is considered that the method above would be recommended for follow-up patients or those who get health checkup as long as there is no interference on the process of diagnosis due to the characteristics of Low Dose examination.
