  • Color image edge detection is an important operation in many image processing areas. This paper presents a new method for edge detection based on the Bhattacharyya distance that can handle arbitrary boundaries by exploring several edge patterns. Experiments show promising results compared to some existing methods.

  • This paper presents an effective single image haze removal using edge-preserving and adaptive transmission estimation to enhance the visibility of outdoor images vulnerable to weather and environmental conditions with computational complexity reduction. The conventional methods involve the time-consuming refinement process. The proposed transmission estimation however does not require the refinement, since it preserves the edges effectively, which selects one between the pixel-based dark channel and the patch-based dark channel in the vicinity of edges. Moreover, we propose an adaptive transmission estimation to improve the visual quality particularly in bright areas like sky. Experimental results with various hazy images represent that the proposed method is superior to the conventional methods in both subjective visual quality and computational complexity. The proposed method can be adopted to compose a haze removal module for realtime devices such as mobile devices, digital cameras, autonomous vehicles, and so on as well as PCs that have enough processing resources.

  • When digital image signals are transmitted or stored, they may be usually degraded by impulsive noise such as BSC noise. Though median filtering is a very effective method to reduce the impulsive noise, it brings non-negligible distortion after filtering. Several algorithms have been proposed to reduce such a distortion, but their reconstructed image quality are inadequate in some cases and they have a difficulty in real-time processing. In this paper, an effective filtering algorithm which can not only reduce the noise effectively but also preserve the edges well and lessen the distortion greatly, is presented. The proposed algorithm is an adaptive algorithm of median filter using local statistics, based on the characteristics of human eyes. The adaptive algorithm results shwo performance improvement of up to 3-4 dB over the nonadaptive one.

  • In the present paper we propose two new improved iterative restoration algorithms. One is to accelerate convergence of the steepest descent method using the improved search directions, while the other accelerates convergence by using preconditioners. It is also shown that the proposed preconditioned algorithm can accelerate iteration-adaptive iterative image restoration algorithm. The preconditioner in the proposed algorithm can be implemented by using the FIR filter structure, so it can be applied to practical application with manageable amount of computation. Experimental results of the proposed methods show good perfomance improvement in the sense of both convergence speed and quality of the restored image. Although the proposed methods cannot be directly included in spatially-adaptive restoration, they can be used as pre-processing for iteration-adaptive algorithms.

  • Wavelet scheme can be applied to the various remote sensing problems: conventional multi-resolution image analysis, compression of large image sets, fusion of heterogeneous sensor image and segmentation of features. In this study, we attempted wavelet-based filtering and its analysis. Traditionally, statistical methods and adaptive filter are used to manipulate noises in the image processing procedure. While we tried to filter random noise from optical image and radar image using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DW1) and Stationary Wavelet Transform (SW1) and compared with existing methods such as median filter and adaptive filter. In result, SWT preserved boundaries and reduced noises most effectively. If appropriate thresholds are used, wavelet filtering will be applied to detect road boundaries, buildings, cars and other complex features from high-resolution imagery in an urban environment as well as noise filtering

  • Video Segmentation is an essential part in region-based video coding and any other fields of the video processing. Among lots of methods proposed so far, the watershed method in which the region growing is performed for the gradient image can produce well-partitioned regions globally without any influence on local noise and extracts accurate boundaries. But, it generates a great number of small regions, which we call over segmentation problem. Therefore we proposes that adaptive trimmed mean filter for resolving the over segmentation of image. Simulation result, we confirm that proposed ATM filter improves the performance to remove noise and reduces damage for the clear degree of image in case of the noise ratio of 20% and over.

  • This paper proposes a new adaptive image labeling algorithm fur object analysis of the binary images. The proposed labeling algorithm need not merge/order of complex equivalent labels like classical labeling algorithm and the processing is done during only 1 Pass. In addition, this algorithm can be extended for gray-level image easily. Experiment result with HIPR image library shows that the proposed algorithm process more than 2 times laster than compared algorithm.

  • In this paper, a new adaptive image processing method based on human visual system has been presented. The basic idea behind the proposed method is to improve the efficiency of the information transfer channel regionally by manipulating the displayed image in order to compensate the regional inefficiency of the information transfer channel. The proposed method consists of two parts; the first part reallocates pixel values corresponding to high X-ray attenuation to that of more intense X-ray exposure by multiplying the pixel values with the local adaptive multiplcation factor, and the second part adjusts the pixel values of dark area of displayed image such as overexposed lung area to be more bright. The processed image with the proposed method shows significantly increased visibility of mediastinal and subdiaphramatic area, and also the lung area of over exposed case without any artifact.

  • A watermark is a signal added to the original signal in order to preserve the copyright of the owner of the digital content. The basic challenge for designing a watermarking system is a dilemma between transparency and robustness. If we want a higher rate of transparency, there has to be a compromise in terms of its robustness and vice versa. Also, until now, watermarking is generalized, resulting in the need for a specialized algorithm to work for a specialized image processing application domain. Our proposed technique takes into consideration the image characteristics for watermark insertion and it optimizes transparency and robustness. It achieved a 99.98% retrieval efficiency for an image blurring attack and counterfeits other attacks. Our proposed technique counterfeits almost all of the image processing attacks.
