Not only acupoints but also extra points were used for blood-Letting therapy. 6. In addition to the usual Blood-letting region, Blood-letting therapy was performed directly on the pathologic site and pathologic reaction site. Conclusions : In the Zhenjiudacheng, Blood-letting therapy was described in a concrete and substantive manner in order to enable practical clinical application.

  • The shoulder is the most flexible joint in human body, so many people suffer from the shoulder pain. In order to improve medical care about shoulder muscle disease, Myofascial Pain Syndrome(M.P.S) is compared with the oriental medical theory. The findings of this study are as follows; 1. Myofascial Pain Syndrome(M.P.S) is the sensory, motor, and autonomic symptoms caused by myofascial trigger points. For the objectivity of the oriental medical theory, practical application is necessary. 2. The meridian and meridian-muscle of the shoulder is su-sam-yang(手三陽), su-sam-um(手三陰). Meridian-muscle theory is similar to anatomical muscle and myofascia. 3. There is similarity in the trigger point and Ashi(阿是)-point, taut band and palpable tender-point(硬結), referred pain and Hangki(行氣). In this study, myofacial pain syndrome is similar to the oriental medical theory. If myofacial pain syndrome is applicated in treatment, the cure of shoulder pain and objectivity of the oriental medical theory is improved.

  • Objectives : Nomenclature for medical terminology is the most important point in traditional medical standardization. For example, standard Romanized nomenclature for acupuncture points, herbal medicines, prescriptions and classic books have been achieaved. However, studies on standard Romanized nomenclature for persons who was involved in traditional medicine are rare. Methods : Following up all articles in Journal of Korean Medical Classics[J. KMC], which have Romanized name for persons and analyzing problems of those. Results : There were several methods to write in Romanized character even to an unique and replaceable name. Conclusions : Romanized nomenclature for persons' name who were involved in traditional medicine as a terminology must have unique expression. So we suggest that authors to write articles have to use unique Romanized nomenclature for persons who were involved in traditional medicine and persons had lived in a certain country should be written in Romanized characters with their own languages.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the massage program stimulating the acupuncture points and meridians on the improvement of sleep quality. Methods: 16 subjects suffering from sleep disorders were recruited and the massage program was conducted 3 times a week for a month. VAS (Visual Analog Scale) and KPSQI (Korean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) were collected through questionnaires, and salivary cortisol concentration test and HRV (Heart Rate Variability) were also used to evaluate the effect. The collected data were analyzed by independent statisticians. Results: VAS and KPSQI values decreased significantly after 4 weeks of massage chair application. There was no significant difference in salivary cortisol concentration and HRV test results. In the group with normal HRV test results and salivary cortisol concentration, the change of VAS and KPSQI values was not significant, while the group with abnormal range showed a statistically significant decrease. Conclusions: The massage chair program stimulating meridians according to Korean medicine theory was effective in improving sleep quality. Massage of acupoints and meridians through a massage chair is expected to be useful as an adjunctive therapy in addition to standard Korean medicine therapy.

  • Ischemia, the leading cause of strokes, is known to be deeply related to synaptic plasticity and apoptosis in tissue damage due to ischemic conditions or trauma. The purpose of this study was to research the effects of NEES(needle electrode electrical stimulation) in brain cells of ischemia-induced rat, more specifically the effects of Poly[ADP-ribose] polymerase(PARP) on the corpus striatum. Ischemia was induced in SD mice by occluding the common carotid artery for 5 minutes, after which blood was re-perfused. NEES was applied to acupuncture points, at 12, 24, and 48 hours post-ischemia on the joksamri, and at 24 hours post-ischemia on the hapgok. Protein expression was investigated through PARP antibody immuno-reactive cells in the cerebral nerve cells and western blotting. The number of PARP reactive cells in the corpus striatum 24 hours post-ischemia was significantly(p<.05) smaller in the NEES group compared to the global ischemia(GI) group. PARP expression 24 hours post-ischemia was very significantly smaller in the NEES group compared to the GI group. Results show that ischemia increases PARP expression and stimulates necrosis, making it a leading cause of death of nerve cells. NEES can decrease protein expression related to cell death, protecting neurons and preventing neuronal apoptosis.

  • The purpose of this study is to report the effect of korean medicine treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in adults. A patient diagnosed with DDH had been treated with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, cupping therapy and chuna manual therapy for 8 weeks. The patient was evaluated by using range of motion (ROM) of hip joint, muscle strength of lower extremity, leg length, numeric rating scale (NRS) and Korean version of hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score (K-HOOS). After the treatment, the patient had an improvement in the symptoms, pain, and activities of daily living of K-HOOS, especially the quality of life. In addition, NRS decreased from 7 to 4 points, and ROM and muscle strength also improved. The results of this study show that korean medicine treatment is effective and meaningful as one of the conservative treatment for DDH in adults.

The best time to pratice is early in the morning or before go to bed, but a litter difference by the writer's opinion, so there is not consistency. 5. • Purpose: To examine the effects of auricular acupressure on symptoms of patients with allergic rhinitis and their quality of life. Methods: A quasi experimental was used with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest method involving 56 adult outpatients who were seen in the Allergy & Asthma clinic at a tertiary referral hospital in Seoul, Korea. The experimental group (n=28) received 2 weeks of auricular acupressure to the Shenmen, wind stream, endocrine, adrenal, and lung acupuncture points; no acupressure was provided to the control group (n=28). Outcome measures included Total Nasal Symptom Score used to assess nasal symptoms, and the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire to assess the quality of life. Repeated measure ANOVA and independent t-test were used to calculate statistical significance. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in terms of allergic rhinitis symptoms (p<.001) and on the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (p<.001) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Finding in this study indicate that auricular acupressure can be used as a nursing intervention to alleviate nasal symptoms and improve rhinoconjuctivitis quality of life in allergic rhinitis patients.

  • This study reported on the effect of traditional Korean medicine on ataxia, gait disturbance, tremor, and dizziness with cerebellar atrophy. The patient was treated with traditional Korean medicines, such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine (Kuibiondam-tang-gami). The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated with the scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA). After treatment, the symptoms had improved. The SARA score decreased by 18 points after Korean medicine treatment. According to this study, traditional Korean medicine can be effective to treat ataxia, gait disturbance, tremor, and dizziness in patients with cerebellar atrophy.
