To obtain weight reduction and high performance, level set based topology optimization in magnetic fields is promising for the design of magnetic devices where the precise boundary shape and topological chanages are required. Level set function is introduced to represent ferromagnetic material boundaries and material properties of the magnetic reluctivity are determined. The optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the actuating force in a prescribed direction under limited usage of ferromagnetic material.
This study was carried out to obtain an analytical expression for the specifications of the Stewart Platform that minimize the maximum force acting on the hydraulic cylinder. The position and orientation of the platform were calculated by means of the inverse kinematic analysis. The maximum force to be exerted on a cylinder was calculated using the Newton's second law for the case when the platform is moved along a horizontal axis with 0.6 g, the maximum translational acceleration possible. This paper suggests a mathematical model to minimize the maximum actuating force using radius and angle ratios as design variables. Finally, a fuzzy set for the minimum actuating force is proposed for this dynamic optimal design problem.

Analysis of actuating forces and joint reaction forces are essential to determine the capacity of actuators, to control the system and to design the components. This paper presents an algorithm tha t calculates actuating forces(or torques) depending on the various driving types to produce a given system motion. The joint reaction forces(or torques) of multibody systems with closed-loops are analyzed in the Cartesian coordinate space using the inverse velocity transformation technique. Two numerical examples were carried out to verify the algorithm proposed.
The hydraulic cylinder is used for actuating the roller-link type rotating floodgate which controls the volume of water in the reservoir. The locating points of hydraulic cylinder are restricted to the limited space and determined to minimize the cylinder force necessary for actuating the floodgate. Generally, the head end point of cylinder is fixed at underground and the rod end point of cylinder is connected to the support link. Therefore there exist three design variables to be determined to minimize the cylinder force within the rotating range of floodgate. First, the mathematical model of the roller-link type rotating floodgate is derived to find the cylinder force corresponding to the floodgate angle. Then, the optimal locating point of hydraulic cylinder is searched using the complex method that is one kind of constrained direct search method.
In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the actuating voltage of the nanotweezer made by manual assembly using carbon nanotube. The nanotweezer is composed of two CNT arms that are made by the multiwalled carbon nanotube and tungsten tip. Since the each CNT arm has the macro actuator, the nanotweezer can manipulate a large particle and it is possible to close and open the CNT arm repeatedly. The closing voltage, i.e., actuating voltage is calculated using the capacitance between the carbon nanotubes in CNT arm. We demonstrate the actuation of the nanotweezer using the voltage calculated with the electrostatic force.

The micromachined variable optical attenuator(VOA) was presented in the paper. The VOA has two single mode fiber(SMF) aligned with free space and symmetric parallel plate actuator with microshutter, which can control a amount of light by driving the actuator. In the paper, analysis on driving performances of the VOA was performed and can be reduced threshold voltage through the decreasing displacement actuating range. This paper presents a VOA that is fabricated using bosch deep silicon etching process with silicon on insulator(SOD wafer. The VOA consists of driving electrode, ground electrode, actuating microshutter, and mechanical stopper. In this VOA, actuating shutter is driven by electrostatic force and the threshold voltage is close to 28V, 46V come along with the spring width of 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively. Attenuation range is measured from 2.4㏈ to 16.7㏈.

The hydraulic cylinder is used for actuating the sluice gate which controls the volume of water in the reservoir. The locating points of hydraulic cylinder are restricted to limited space and determined to minimize the cylinder force necessary for actuating the sluice gate. Generally, the head end point of cylinder is fixed at underground and the rod end point of cylinder is connected to the gate plate when it is fully opened. Therefore there exist three parameters to be determined to minimize the cylinder force in the operation range of sluice gate. The optimal locating points of hydraulic cylinder are obtained using the complex method that is one kind of constrained direct search m method.

In this paper, we propose a new locomotive mechanism using impulsive force for microcapsule-type endoscope. It has the compact size for movement in the colon and actuating mechanisms for hi-directional movement. The actuating mechanism resembles a pneumatic cylinder and consists of body, inertia mass(piston). spring. pneumatic source and calve. When valve is ON, the pneumatic impulsive force between piston and body drives them in two opposite direction. As the air in the body is passed away, the contrary movements are occurred by spring reaction. Therefore, the direction of body's motion is determined by the relative magnitude of two opposite impulsive forces, i.e., pneumatic and spring force. The effect of two impulsive forces can simply be controlled by On-Off time of solenoid valve.

In optical disk drive (ODD), disk rotation speed has been increasing rapidly to achieve high data transfer rate. High servo bandwidths for focusing and tracking actuator are required to follow dynamic disturbance by high rotation speed in ODD. However, the servo bandwidth is significantly limited by some vibration modes which are induced by the flexibility of moving part. In this work, the vibration modes affecting bandwidth of actuators are suppressed by modifying actuating force by VCM. For this, the relation between the horizontal component of the actuating force and vibration mode is analyzed and force characteristic affecting to vibration mode is obtained through electromagnetic and structural analysis using simulation program.

Through analytical method based on S-76 model, the level of rotor hub vibration reduction was analyzed according to higher harmonic actuating by individual blade control. The higher harmonic actuating method for individual blades was divided into a method of generating an additional actuating force from the pitch-link in the rotating part and generating actuating force through the active trailing edge flap control of the blade. In the 100kts forward flight conditions, the hub load analysis was performed by changing the phase angle of 15 degree for the 2P/3P/4P/5P harmonic actuation for individual blades. Through the harmonic actuation results, the sensitivity of the rotor system according to the actuating conditions was analyzed, and the T-matrix representing the characteristics of the rotor system was derived based on this analysis result. And through this T-matrix, optimal higher harmonic actuating condition was derived to minimize hub vibration level for flight condition. In addition, the effect on the performance of the rotor system and the pitch-link load under minimum hub vibration condition, as well as the noise influence through the noise analysis were confirmed.
