  • In this paper, Coordinated Semi-Actuated Signal Control algorithm was developed and evaluated. According to the analysis of simulation, the coordinated semi-actuated signal control led to reduced vehicle delay as the difference of traffic volume between major and minor streets was getting bigger. But when there was relatively high traffic volume, or the equivalent amount of traffic volume on major and minor streets, optimized pre-timed signal control was verified to lower delay times compared to coordinated semi-actuated signal control; however, it might increase pedestrian delay. Therefore, the coordinated semi-actuated signal control should be implemented at intersections where traffic volume is relatively low.

  • This paper discusses a method for optimizing the semi-actuated traffic signal control system by adjusting the initial interval according to the number of vehicles waiting for the green light in the actuated phase. We also present a Left-Turn actuated traffic signal control strategy that examines the vehicular noise in the detection area and determines the phase extension and the gap-out. In order to detect the vehicles in real-time, an image detector's Video Image Tracking technology was adopted. A 'Zone in Zone'method was implemented, and the image detection area is segmented into three zones: 1) Zone1 for verifying a vehicles obligatory presence, 2) Zone2 for counting the standby vehicles, and 3) Zone3 for examining the number of vehicles that have passed. The on-site assessment of the Left Turn Actuated Control is carried out using CORSIM, and the results show that the Control Delay decreased by 23.10%, 15.06%, and 4.34% compared to the delays resulted from pre-timed control, semi-actuated control-1 and semi-actuated control-2 traffic signal control systems respectively. The Queue Time also decreased by 36.24%, 20.10% and the Total Time by 14.36%, 7.02% for the same scenario. Which clearly demonstrates the operational efficiency. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the improvement from the propose traffic control strategy tends to increase as the through traffic volume reaches a saturated condition and the left-turn traffic volume decreases.

  • This paper aims to develop an integrated urban freeway exit-intersection actuated traffic signal control strategy based on which a real-time detection of queue at each of an exit-ramp and an arterial. To evaluate effects of the proposed actuated traffic signal control according to various traffic situations and geometric conditions, this paper analyzed the effects of the proposed traffic signal control strategy according to traffic situations such as the occasion of the arterial being saturated, the occasion of the exit-ramp being saturated, and the occasion of both the arterial and the exit-ramp being saturated. To reflect geometric conditions that influence the effects of the control strategy, this paper evaluated effects before and after applying the actuated traffic signal control strategy according to six cases for both above and under the downstream link length of 200m as proposed by COSMOS. The study results shown that when the link length above 200m, offered a greater effect of applying the actuated traffic control strategy than below 200m. Thus, the actuated traffic signal control through a real-time detection of queue is expected to offer a greater effect at longer downward link.

  • Recently in Korea, in the case of metropolis, the urban signalized intersections are controlled by traffic information center or ITS center. Cheon-an City also established traffic information center through the 1st.-$\sim$3rd. ITS public construction and has managed this center that includes bus information service, traffic information collection and providing service, parking information service, and traffic responsive control system. In the Cheon-an metropolitan traffic signal operation, traffic signal controllers were grouped by the each main traffic flow axes and performed with coordinated signal timing for the signalized arterials, and also cycle and split changed by realtime traffic demands. Cheon-an urban traffic responsive control system was evaluated by intersection delay and speed, then it was verified that the delay decreased and vehicle speed improved. However, the rural signal control system to connect adjacency town was evaluated to have lower status than urban area due to the unimproved TOD (Time of day) plan. Therefore actuated signal control was examined for substitutive control system in isolated signal intersection. The aim of this article is to compare actuated signal control with TOD mode in the rural intersection of Cheon-an and to fine superiority of these two control mode, with evaluation of vehicle delay by using HCM(2000) method and by micro-simulation CORSlM. The result of field test show that actuated signal control gave better performance in delay comparison than the existing TOD signal control. And simulation outcome verified that non-optimized TOD has higher delay than optimized TOD mode, non-optimal actuated mode, and optimal actuated signal control mode. Particularly, these three modes delays had not different values according to the paired sample t-test. This is because small traffic demands were loaded in each links. This suggested actuated signal control is expected to be more effective than TOD mode in some rural isolated intersections which frequently need to survey for traffic volume.

  • The surrogate safety assessment model which was developed based on the conflict theory by FHWA in the US is software to analyze traffic conflicts using the individual vehicle trajectory data from a microscopic traffic simulation model. This study aims at assessing the safety of different signal control strategies, including pre-time and actuated signal control, using the SSAM. To this end, this study effort has developed a microscopic traffic simulation model using VISSIM through a field study, and then produced the surrogate measures, including TTC, PET, DR, MaxS and DeltaS, and the numbers of conflicts, including rear-end, right angle and lane-changing conflicts. The assessment results indicated that the actuated signal control may produce more conflicts in terms of rear-end conflicts. The use of SSAM in the safety assessments for diverse traffic alternatives in a safe and fast way may contribute to the improvement of safety in the roadway transportation.

  • This study has proposed the signal operating system to use both semi-actuated signal control and pedestrian push-button as a way to make up for the problems of 3 leg intersections which are operated inefficiently in the signal operation, one of the methods of traffic operations. In case of the semi-actuated signal control, it can reduce delay inside the intersection by serving to uncongested traffic on the main road where there is not much traffic volume on the secondary road and push-button signal can reduce unnecessary waiting time it could happen to vehicles by operating it though there is no pedestrian. Quantitative analysis was tried regarding the average delay reduction per vehicle using VISSIM, microscopic simulation program regarding how much effect it has compared with the existing signal control system and semi-actuated signal control system when the above two advantages are collected. The field test was performed for one three-leg intersection of Incheon. According to respectively signal control method pedestrian traffic changed and executed a sensitivity analysis. The result which compares the average delay time per a vehicle of scenarios, the signal control method of using the pedestrian push-button system in comparison with the fixed signal control method showed to decrease effect of a minimum 3.7 second (10%), a maximum 5.8 second (16%). When the pedestrian traffic volume was 20% or less of the measurement traffic volume, The signal control method of using the pedestrian push-button system appeared to be more efficient the semi-actuated signal control with object intersection.

  • A national highway takes on an arterial roadway role between regions. It's traffic volume of minor approach is very lower than mainline because most of the traffic of national highway consists of through traffic. This means an actuated signal operation is more efficient on the national highway than pre-timed signal. actuated signals have detections on some or all movements except the mainline. In spite of these effects have been evaluated in previous studies, widespread propagation of actuated signal operation has not made so much in Korea. Because there are so many problems to use actuated signal as it is in side of roadway facilities. In this study, improved a actuation system for the national highway and evaluated it with field implementation.

  • The performance of two single-barrier three-phase actuated control systems at diamond interchanges was evaluated for various traffic conditions. To emulate the actuated signal control, hardware-in-the-loop system combined with CORSIM simulation program was used. Two performance measures, average delay and total stops, were used for the evaluation process. Results showed that the two three-phase systems gave similar performance in terms of average delay, but not stops. The delay performance of each phasing system was generally dependent on the traffic pattern and ramp spacing. The total stops decreased as the spacing increased, and it was the most sensitive variable that can differentiate between the two three-phase systems. It was also shown that the hardware-in-the-loop control could provide a good method to overcome the limitations of current simulation technology.

  • In this paper, noticing the point of human's ability which appropriately cope with vague conditions, we design fuzzy traffic signal light controller similar to human's distinction ability and decide the optimum cycle most suited to any traffic junction using fuzzy identification algorithm. In this study, for the control output decision process we design fuzzy controller better than electronic vehicle actuated controller in performance. We propose the cycle decision method which is not limited by the variance of traffic junction vehicle number through overcoming the limit of Webster's method which is adopted by the fixed cycle controller. Simulated experimental results show that fuzzy controller and fuzzy identification algorithm are better than the existing electronic vehicle actuated controller and fixed cycle controller in delay time per vehicle.
