  • In this paper, an adaptive control problem of a hydraulic actuator for vehicle active suspension controller is divided into two parts: the inner loop controller and the outer loop controller. Inner loop controller, which is a nonlinear adaptive controller, is designed to control the force generated by the nonlinear hydraulic actuator acting under the effects of Coulomb friction. For simplicity of designing a nonlinear controller, the spool valve dynamics of a hydraulic actuator is reduced using a singular perturbation technique. The estimation error signal used to an indirect parameter adaptation is calculated without a regressor filtering. The absolute velocity of a sprung mass will be damped down by its negatively proportional term(sky-hook damper) adopted as an outer loop controller. Simulation results are presented to show the importance of controlling the actuator force and the validity of the proposed adaptive controller. (author). refs., figs. tab.

  • In this paper, a new control system design algorithm, which has the advantages of the existing LQR and eigenstrcture assignment methods, is proposed. The method of the transformation matrix via block controller is utilized to develop the scheme. Using the proposed algorithm, LQR weighting matrices q and R, which satisfy the desired closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors, can be achieved using only simple matrix computations. The usefulness of the proposed scheme is verified by applying to a numerical example and an automotive active suspension control system design.

Semi-active bounded optimal control of uncertain nonlinear coupling vehicle system with rotatable inclined supports and MR damper under random road excitation

  • The semi-active optimal vibration control of nonlinear torsion-bar suspension vehicle systems under random road excitations is an important research subject, and the boundedness of MR dampers and the uncertainty of vehicle systems are necessary to consider. In this paper, the differential equations of motion of the coupling torsion-bar suspension vehicle system with MR damper under random road excitation are derived and then transformed into strongly nonlinear stochastic coupling vibration equations. The dynamical programming equation is derived based on the stochastic dynamical programming principle firstly for the nonlinear stochastic system. The semi-active bounded parametric optimal control law is determined by the programming equation and MR damper dynamics. Then for the uncertain nonlinear stochastic system, the minimax dynamical programming equation is derived based on the minimax stochastic dynamical programming principle. The worst-case disturbances and corresponding semi-active bounded parametric optimal control are obtained from the programming equation under the bounded disturbance constraints and MR damper dynamics. The control strategy for the nonlinear stochastic vibration of the uncertain torsion-bar suspension vehicle system is developed. The good effectiveness of the proposed control is illustrated with numerical results. The control performances for the vehicle system with different bounds of MR damper under different vehicle speeds and random road excitations are discussed.

  • In this paper, an optimal suspension system with preview of the road input is synthesized for a half tracked vehicle. The main goal of this research is to improve the ride comfort characteristics of a fast moving tracked vehicle in order to maintain the driver's driving capability. Several different kinds of preview control algorithms are evaluated with active or semi-active suspension systems. The road information estimated from the motion of the 1st road-wheel is adequate to make the best use of the preview control algorithm for tracked vehicles. The ride-comfort characteristics of the tracked vehicle are more dependent on pitching angular acceleration than heaving acceleration. The pitching motion is reduced by the suspension system with hard outer suspensions and soft inner suspensions. Simulation results show that the performance of sky-hook algorithms for ride comfort nearly follow that of full state feedback algorithms.

  • This paper presents a control of active suspension for quarter car model with two degree of freedom by using H$\infty$ method. Absolute velocity of car body is measured for feedback. The system parameter variations are treated with multiplicative uncertainty model. Simulation results show that the H$\infty$ control provides good trade-off between ride quality, suspension packaging and road holding constraints. The experiment with a front wheel suspension system was done to verify the simulation results.

  • In the recent years, the development of computer-controlled suspension dampers and actuators has improved the trade-off between the vehicle handling and ride comfort, and has led to the development of various damper control policies. The skyhook control is an effective control strategy for suppressing vehicle vibration. In this study, a fuzzy skyhook control is proposed and tuned by a genetic algorithm to improve ride comfort. The proposed fuzzy skyhook control is applied to a quarter-car model in order to compare its performance with continuous skyhook suspensions. To obtain optimized fuzzy skyhook control, scale factors and in-out membership functions are tuned by a genetic algorithm. The simulation results show that the fuzzy skyhook control offers more effective suspension performance over the continuous skyhook control.

  • In this paper a self-tuning gain-scheduled skyhook control for semi-active suspension systems is investigated. The dynamic characteristics of a continuously variable damper including electro-hydraulic pressure control valves is analyzed. A 2-d.o.f. time-varying quarter-car model that permits variations in sprung mass and suspension spring coefficient is considered. The self-tuning skyhook control algorithm proposed in this paper requires only the measurement of body acceleration. The absolute velocity of the sprung mass and the relative velocity of the suspension deflection are estimated by using integral filters.   • The purpose of this study is to investigate the ERSU(Electr0-Rheological Suspension IJnit) and some progress of damping force characteristic of a ERSU. This paper describes overall construction of th'e system design and the manufacturing of ERSU. A model of the ERSU is made by using electric field dependent on Bingham properities of ER fluid. In this paper. the ERSU is designed and manufactured for a light ground tracked vehicle. From the results, it is shown that the damping performance of ERSLJ is better than that of a passive suspension unit. This experimental study might be very useful for the simulat~on and the design of semi-active suspension units.

  • This paper presents a new concept of a semi-active suspension system for a commercial vehicle seat. The proposed suspension system features an ER(electro-rheological) damper which can produce continuously tunable damping forces by control electric fields. A dynamic model of the ER damper is first achieved by incorporating Bingham property of the ER fluid, followed by the formulation of governing equations of motion for the suspension system. A sliding mode controller is then designed on the basis of the hyper-plane sliding mode scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is evaluated by investigating control performance for vibration isolation.

Optimal Design of Discrete Time Preview Controllers for Semi-Active and Active Suspension systems

  • In this paper, modified discrete time preview control algorithms for active and semi-active suspension systems are derived based on a simple mathematical 4 DOF half-car model. The discrete time preview control laws for ride comfort are employed in the simulation. The algorithms for MIMO system contain control strategies reacting against body forces that occur at cornering, accelerating, braking, or under payload, in addition to road disturbances. Matlab simulation results for the discrete time case are compared with those for the continuous time case and the appropriateness of the discrete time algorithms are verified by the of simulation results. Passive, active, and semi-active system responses to a sinusoidal input and an asphalt road input are analysed and evaluated. The simulation results show the extent of performance degradation due to numerical errors related to the length of the sampling time and time delay.
