  • Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were surface-modified by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation and used as a gas sensor electrode to investigate the effect of E-beam on nitric oxide (NO) gas sensing performance. XPS results showed that the oxygen component of ACFs surface treated by E-beam decreased and $sp^2$ bonded carbon of ACFs surface increased. These results were attributed to the structural transformation of ACFs surface irradiated by E-beam. NO gas sensitivity of the electrode composed of ACFs irradiated by100 kGy increased from about 4% to 8%, and the response time was also meaningfully enhanced from 360 s to 120 s. This is due to the fact that the $sp^2$ carbon bond increased by E-beam irradiation of activated carbon fibers, which significantly affects the resistance change of the electrode in NO gas sensing.

  • The electrochemical characteristics of electric double layer capacitor(EDLC) were investigated using various carbon materials. The physical properties such as specific surface area and mean pore size of activated carbon were analyzed by BET. The results of the activated carbon used for electrode material showed that the specific surface areas varied from 600 to 1500 $m^2$/g and mean pore sizes from 1.74 to 2.88 nm. A maximum specific capacitance of 0.30 F/$cm^2$ was obtained for the activated carbon with the highest specific surface area and ionic conductivity. Also, it was found that the electrochemical results of the cyclic charge-discharge tests were stable.

  • A three-dimensional electrochemical process using nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI)/activated carbon (AC) particle electrode and persulfate (PS) was developed for oxidizing pollutants. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis were performed to characterize particle electrode. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis confirmed that NZVI was impregnated on the surface of AC. Compared with the conventional two-dimensional electrochemical process, the three-dimensional particle electrode process achieved three times higher efficiency in phenol removal. The system with current density of $5mA/cm^2$ exhibited the highest phenol removal efficiency among the systems employing 1, 5, and $10mA/cm^2$. The removal efficiency of phenol increased as the Fe contents in the particle electrode increased. The particle electrode achieved more than 70% of phenol removal until it was reused for three times. The sulfate radical played a predominant role in phenol removal according to the radical scavenging test.

  • In the electrode fabrication of unit cell, we found that optimal the electrochemical characteristics were obtained with at 90 wt.% of activated carbon(BP-20), 5 wt.% of conducting agent(Ppy, Super P) and 5 wt.% of P(VdF-co-HFP)/PVP mixed binder. The electrochemical characteristics of unit cell with Ppy improver were as follows : 37.6 F/g of specific capacitance, 0.98 $\Omega$ of AC-ESR, 2.92 Wh/kg and 6.05 Wh/L of energy density, and 754 W/kg and 1,562 W/L of power density. It was confirmed that internal resistance were reduced due to the increase of electrical conductivity and filling density by the introduction of conductivity agent, and content of conducting agent was suitable in the range of 4~6 wt.%. According to the impedance measurement of the electrode with conductivity agent, we found that it was possible to charge rapidly by the fast steady-state current convergence due to low equivalent series resistance(AC-ESR), fast charge transfer rate at interface between electrode and electrolyte, and low RC time constant.

  • This study aimed to develop a new dust collecting system equipped with an activated carbon (A.C.) coated electrode. Before fabrication, pre-treatment of A.C. was performed to remove metal ions within the A.C. to enlarge its specific surface area. Then, pre-treated A.C., black carbon, polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), and methanol were mixed to make a gel compound, which was coated onto aluminum plates to fabricate electrodes. The optimal mixing ratio of A.C., black carbon, PVAc, and methanol was found to be 10 g: 2 g: 3 g: 20 mL. After fabrication, the electrodes were used in the batch-type experiment for $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ removal. The reduction rates of the gases were high at the beginning and slowly reduced with time. Dust collection experiments were conducted in continuous flow, with various voltages applied. Compared to 5 kV, dust removal efficiency was 1.5 times higher when 10 kV was applied. Increasing the number of electrodes applied also increased the collecting efficiency. The correlation coefficient between actual collecting efficiency and trend line was higher than 99%. Consequently, the novel dust collection system equipped with A.C. coated electrode appears to be a promising substitute for existing dust-control devices.

  • $TiO_2$-doped activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were successfully prepared as capacitive deionization (CDI) electrode materials by facile ultrasonication-assisted process. ACFs were treated with titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) and isopropyl alcohol solutions of different concentrations and then calcinated by ultrasonication without heat-treatment. The results show that a certain amount of anatase $TiO_2$ was present on the ACF surface. The specific capacitance of the $TiO_2$-doped ACF electrode was remarkably improved (by 93.8% at scan rate of $50mV\;s^{-1}$) over that of the untreated ACF electrode, despite decreases in the specific surface area and total pore volume upon $TiO_2$ doping. From the CDI experiments, the salt adsorption capacity and charge efficiency of the sample with TTIP percent concentration of 15% were found to considerably increase by 71.9 and 57.1%, respectively. These increases are attributed to the improved wettability of the electrode, which increases the number of surface active sites and facilitates salt ion diffusion in the ACF pores. Additionally, the Ti-OH groups of $TiO_2$ act as electrosorption sites, which increases the electrosorption capacity.

  • This work describes the effect of the number of roll pressing and the composition of carbon black on the electric and mechanical properties of carbon-PTFE electrode, in which composition is MSP20 : carbon black: PTFE = 95-X : X : 5 wt.%. It was found that the best electric and mechanical properties were obtained for sheet electrode roll pressed about 15 times and for sheet electrode, in which composition is MSP20 carbon black : PTFE = 80 : 15 : 5 wt%. These behaviors could be explained by the network structure of PTFE fibrils and conducting paths linked with carbon blacks, respectively. On the other hand, cell capacitor using the sheet electrode with 15 wt.% of carbon black attached on aluminum current collector with the electric conductive adhesive, in composition is carbon black : CMC = 70 : 30 wt.%, has exhibited the best rate capability between 0.5 $mA/cm^2$ ~ 100 $mA/cm^2$ current density and the lowest ESR.

  • A hierarchical pore structured novolac-type phenol based-activated carbon with micropores and mesopores was fabricated. Physical activation using a sacrificial silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) template and chemical activation using potassium hydroxide (KOH) were employed to prepare these materials. The morphology of the well-developed pore structure was characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The novolac-type phenol-based activated carbon retained hierarchical pores (micropores and mesopores); it exhibited high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface areas and hierarchical pore size distributions. The hierarchical pore novolac-type phenol-based activated carbon was used as an electrode in electric double-layer capacitors, and the specific capacitance and the retained capacitance ratio were measured. The specific capacitances and the retained capacitance ratio were enhanced, depending on the $SiO_2$ concentration in the material. This result is attributed to the hierarchical pore structure of the novolac-type phenol-based activated carbon.
