There have been many attempts to predict resistance of vessels in ice floe environment, but they mostly have both strong and weak points at the same time; for instance, simplified formulas are very fast but less flexible to types of ship and ice conditions and other numerical techniques need high computing cost for increased accuracy. A new numerical simulation technique of combining explicit finite element analysis code with a user-subroutine to control real-time forces acting on ice floes was proposed, thereby it was possible to predict ship-to-ice floe resistance with higher convenience and accuracy than other proposed approaches. The basic theory on how real-time hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces acting on ice floes could be generated using user-subroutine was explained. The heave motion of a single ice floe was simulated using the user-subroutine and the motion amplitudes and periods were almost consistent with analytic values. Towing tests of an icebreaker model ship were simulated using explicit finite element analyses with the user-subroutine. The ice-induced resistance obtained from the towing experiments and simulations showed significant differences. Intentional increase of the drag coefficient to increase the contact duration between the ice floes and rigid model ship leaded the total resistance to be substantially consistent between the model tests and numerical simulations.
The bi-material elastic system consisting of the pre-stressed hollow cylinder and pre-stresses surrounding infinite elastic medium is considered and it is assumed that the mentioned initial stresses in this system are caused with the compressing or stretching uniformly distributed normal forces acting at infinity in the direction which is parallel to the cylinder's axis. Moreover, it is assumed that on the internal surface of the cylinder the ring load which moves with constant velocity acts and within these frameworks it is required to determine the influence of the aforementioned initial stresses on the critical velocity of the moving load. The corresponding investigations are carried out within the framework of the so-called three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stresses bodies and the axisymmetric stress-strain state case is considered. The "moving coordinate system" method is used and the Fourier transform is employed for solution to the formulated mathematical problem and Fourier transformation of the sought values are determined analytically. However, the originals of those are determined numerically with the use of the Sommerfeld contour method. The critical velocity is determined from the criterion, according to which, the magnitudes of the absolute values of the stresses and displacements caused with the moving load approaches an infinity. Numerical results on the influence of the initial stresses on the critical velocity and interface normal and shear stresses are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the initial stretching (compressing) of the constituents of the system under consideration causes a decrease (an increase) in the values of the critical velocity.
Wind load acting on a standalone structure is different from that acting on a similar structure which is surrounded by other structures in close proximity. The presence of other structures in the surrounding can change the wind flow regime around the principal structure and thus causing variation in wind loads compared to a standalone case. This variation on wind loads termed as interference effect depends on several factors like terrain category, geometry of the structure, orientation, wind incident angle, interfering distances etc., In the present study, a three building configuration is considered and the mean pressure coefficients on each face of principle building are determined in presence of two interfering buildings. Generally, wind loads on interfering buildings are determined from wind tunnel experiments. Computational fluid dynamic studies are being increasingly used to determine the wind loads recently. Whereas, wind tunnel tests are very expensive, the CFD simulation requires high computational cost and time. In this scenario, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique and Support Vector Regression (SVR) can be explored as alternative tools to study wind loads on structures. The present study uses these data-driven approaches to predict mean pressure coefficients on each face of principle building. Three typical arrangements of three building configuration viz. L shape, V shape and mirror of L shape arrangement are considered with varying interfering distances and wind incidence angles. Mean pressure coefficients (Cp mean) are predicted for 45 degrees wind incidence angle through ANN and SVR. Further, the critical faces of principal building, critical interfering distances and building arrangement which are more prone to wind loads are identified through this study. Among three types of building arrangements considered, a maximum of 3.9 times reduction in Cp mean values are noticed under Case B (V shape) building arrangement with 2.5B interfering distance. Effect of interfering distance and building arrangement on suction pressure on building faces has also been studied. Accordingly, Case C (mirror of L shape) building arrangement at a wind angle of 45º shows less suction pressure. Through this study, it was also observed that the increase of interfering distance may increase the suction pressure for all the cases of building configurations considered.
In general, there are various approaches available in literature to model discontinuous rock masses and engineers are often confused which one to use for designing structures in rock masses. Modelling rock masses can be classified mainly into two approaches. One is discrete modelling of intact rock and discontinuities and the other is the equivalent continuum modelling. In this study five models are selected ;(1) Crack tensor model, (2) Equivalent volume defect model, (3) Damage model, (4) Micro - structure model (Parallel model and Series model), and (5) Homogenization model. Most of these models are mainly concerned with how to define additional strain due to discontinuities over the representative elementary volume (REV) and how to relate the stress field of discontinuities to that acting on the REV. The characteristics of these models are clarified by comparing with results of some laboratory tests.
In designing the structures of railway rolling stocks, deterministic methods associated with the concept of a safety factor have been traditionally used. The deterministic approaches based on the mean values of applied loads and material properties have been used as safety verification for the design of rolling-stock car body structures. The uncertainties in the applied loading for the high speed train and the strength of new materials in the rolling stocks require the application of probabilistic approaches to ensure fatigue safety in the desired system. Pressure loadings acting on the car body when the train passes through tunnels show reflected pressure waves for high-speed trains and they may cause a fatigue failure in vehicle bodies. Use of new material technology as body structures also introduces uncertainties in the material strength. A probabilistic approach is more adaptable in designing reliable structures when the pressure waves from the tunnels pounds and new material technology is adopted. In this paper, it is proposed that a fatigue design and assessment method based on a reliability which deals with the loading variations on a railway vehicle due to the pressure reflected in tunnels and the strength variations of material. Equation for the fatigue reliability index has been formulated to calculate the reliability assessment of a vehicle body under fluctuating pressure loadings in a tunnel. Considered in this formulation are the pressure distribution characteristics, the fatigue strength distribution characteristics, and the concept of stress-transfer functions due to the pressure loading.

The Newman-Raju formula and contour integral-based finite element analyses(FEAs) have been widely used to assess crack growth rates and residual lives at crack locations in ships or offshore structures, but the Newman-Raju formula is known to be less accurate for the complicated weld details and the conventional FEA-based contour integral approach needs concentrated efforts to construct FEA models. Recently, an extended finite element method(XFEM) has been proposed to reduce those modeling efforts with reliable accuracy. Stress intensity factors(SIFs) from the approaches such as the Newman-Raju formula, conventional FEA-based J-integral, and XFEM-based J-integral were compared for an infinitely long plate with a propagating elliptic crack. It was concluded that the XFEM approach was far reliable in terms of prediction ability of SIFs. Assuming a 25 year-aged coast guard patrol ship had the prescribed cracks at the bracket toes attached to longitudinal stiffeners in way of deck and bottom, SIFs were derived based on the three approaches. To obtain axial tension loads acting on the longitudinal stiffeners, long term hull girder bending moments were assumed to obey Weibull distribution of which two parameters were decided from a reference (DNV, 2014). For the complicated weld details, it was concluded that the XFEM approach could cost-effectively and accurately estimate the crack growth rates and residual lives of ship structures.
Geotechnical characteristic values for reliability-based design were analyzed using domestic marine clays. Analysis results indicate that there were close to mean values in oder of Student/Ovesen, Schneider and EN 1990's approach. However, it was found that the EN 1990's approach is inappropriate far estimating geotechnical characteristic value due to low reliability of estimation results. Four approaches had a trend of evaluating characteristic value conservatively with increasing of soil variability. Also, stability and settlement of breakwater subjected to nominal stress with unimproved soft grounds were computed to investigate the effects of estimated characteristic values. In case of using the Schneider's approach, the ratio of allowable bearing capacity/acting loads suggested 65% of that obtained from using the arithmetic mean approach, and showed underestimated value of 13.6% of the settlement obtained from the latter. The comparison of case designs using a representative value from arithmetic mean approach with the proposed approaches, using characteristic value showed that the former was mostly overestimated.
The constrained motion requires the determination of constraint force acting on unconstrained systems for satisfying given constraints. Most of the methods to decide the force depend on numerical approaches such that the Lagrange multiplier method, and the other methods need vector analysis or complicated intermediate process. In 1992, Udwadia and Kalaba presented the generalized inverse method to describe the constrained motion as well as to calculate the constraint force. The generalized inverse method has the advantages which do not require any linearization process for the control of nonlinear systems and can explicitly describe the motion of holonomically and/or nongolonomically constrained systems. In this paper, an explicit equation to describe the constrained motion is derived by minimizing the performance index, which is a function of constraint force vector, with respect to the constraint force. At this time, it is shown that the positive-definite weighting matrix in the performance index must be the inverse of mass matrix on the basis of the Gauss's principle and the derived differential equation coincides with the generalized inverse method. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated by means of two numerical applications.

This paper intends to investigate such effects through experiments. The contents of the investigation are effects of position of repeated loading and unloading, passing frequency. For the purpose of the investigation an experimental load-deflection system is developed and the system is possible to measure deflection of the wall and earth pressure due to different size of strip loading and cyclic loading. The findings from the experiments are as follows: 1. As repeated loading approaches to the wall, the measured horizontal residual earth pressure agrees well with Rowe's empirical formula, while as the loading is far from the wall the earth pressure consists with Boussinesq's and Spangler's formulas. Also it is found that below 0.6m depth from ground surface the effects of repeated loading can be nearly neglected. 2. From comparison analyses of earth pressure theories and experimental results, a reagression equation is suggested herein, and earth pressure at any depth and maximum earth pressure due to cyclic loading can be estimated from the equation.
In this study a series of approaches have been made to find out how complaining behavior would show according to the conviction in the locus of control as to where the general contents dissatisfied by consumers and the dissatisfied consumers would place the responsibility for the consequence of behavior and to test the difference of complaining behavior pursuant to demographic variables and the complaining behavior. The results of this study are described as follows: 1. The consumers have largely attributed the locus of responsibility for their dissatisfaction following the purchase of refrigerators to the relevant manufacturers, advertizers, consumer(herself) and distributors, and as for the dissatisfaction by an attribute of refrigerator, a high level of dissatisfaction was revealed on the price and items of properties. 2. There was no difference in the complaining behavior of consumers pursuant to the demographic features. 3. It was revealed that there wee many consumers, among those respondents to questionnaires, who have actually shown their complaing behavior, while most of them would act inthe form o private behavior, because the cases of acting positive way of public behavior, even though they were apt to show complaining behavior, appears to be extremely rare. 4. A significant difference was shown in the complaing behavior pursuant to the conviction in the locus of control.
