  • The physical properties of the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) can be easily controlled by a proper functional monomer which has functional groups for crosslinking. This study was to investigate the effect of crosslinking agents, isocyanate and epoxy types, of acrylic PSAs on adhesive properties. 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylic acid (AA), and 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate as monomer were used. The obtained samples with different AA contents were partially crosslinked with epoxy- or isocyanate-typed agent. Peel strength, balltack, holding power test and contraction percentage of the obtained PSA were evaluated. Most properties of acrylic PSAs were increased with AA content and acrylic PSAs with epoxy-typed crosslinking agent (4 crosslinking sites) which produces flexible link (ether), showed better properties than those of isocyanate-typed one (3 crosslinking sites).

  • In this study, we designed an environment friendly, water-based adhesive using the acrylic emulsion method as a replacement for solvent-based adhesives, which are most commonly used in layered laminates for flexible food packaging. We designed adhesives with different combinations of anionic, non-ionic, and phosphoric ester surfactants, and with different concentrations of chain transfer agent (CTA). We also examined the effect of the degree of cross-linking by synthesizing and comparing 8 test group adhesives with different types of functional monomers. Additionally, we synthesized 2 other test group pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) using styrene/alpha-methyl styrene/acrylic acid (SAA) semipolymer dispersing agents (with molecular weights of 13,000 g/mol and 8,600 g/mol, respectively) to replace the conventional surfactants. We evaluated whether the 10 test group pressure-sensitive adhesives met the basic physical property criteria required for flexible food packaging by carrying out a physical analysis of their glass transition temperature (Tg), particle size, adhesion, and molecular weight. In our test, 2 test group adhesives manufactured with the combination of anionic and non-ionic surfactants, CTA concentration of 0.2%, and functional monomers of hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) demonstrated molecular weight and flexibility suitable for flexible packaging, with low adhesiveness and small particle size.

  • The decreasing effect of wrinkle on the pressure sensitive adhesive hydrogel patches containing ulmi cortex extract and sorbitol as the drug for anti-wrinkle were investigated. In this study, hydrogels were prepared by the crosslinking reaction of acrylic polymers and aluminum ions produced by L(+)-tartaric acid hydrolysis of the dihydroxy aluminum aminoacetates. The inhibition concentration of ulmi cortex extract on the collagenase exhibited at 0.01%. Furthermore, the moisturizing effect of hydrogel patches formulated with sorbitol was higher than that without it. In vivo animal test in hairless mouse showed that the ulmi cortex-loaded hydrogel patches had about 31.2% of anti-wrinkle effect compared to blank (before attaching the patches). Human test showed that only 33% of subjects showed the decreasing of wrinkle during 8 weeks. In conclusion, the model pressure sensitive adhesive hydrogel patches in this study would be pharmaceutically applicable for the wrinkle treatment on the facial skin.

  • The waterborne acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive in the basis of butylacylate (BA) and 2-Ethylhexylacrylate (2-EHA) was synthesized and the methyl methacrylate (MMA) have been used to give the rigidity perfroamce. The polymreric latex was synthesized using butyl acrylate (BA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and each 1, 2, 3% of various functional monomers. The dimethyl-2-imidazlidon acrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate was used in order to increase the wetting properties of acrylic emulsion. To study of properties of functional monomer, The polymreric latex was synthesized various functional monomers each 1, 2, 3%. The 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate showed the best properties. Latex with acrylic acid and dimethyl-2-imidazlidon acrylate had good peel strength, holding power, but it showed that they didn't separate from adhered cleanly by weak cohesion strength. The adhesion performance was increased by increasing amount of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate however latexes with upper 7% 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate showed that the properties of PSA decreased.

  • In this study, water-based acrylic tackifier with different contents of 1-dodecanethiol(n-DM), a chain transfer agent(CTA), were synthesized to improve the performance and adhesive properties of water-based acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA). In order to investigate the change in physical properties according to the amount of water-based acrylic tackifier added, 10/20/30 phr of water-based acrylic tackifier was added to the water-borne acrylic emulsion to measure the physical properties. The molecular weight and glass transition temperature(Tg) of the synthesized water-based acrylic tackifier tended to decrease as the content of n-DM increased. When a water-based acrylic tackifier was added to the water-borne acrylic emulsion, the peel strength and heat-resistance were increased. Also, when the water-based acrylic tackifiers were added at 10 phr or 20 phr, the best value was shown.

  • Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are used in various field of high-technology industries such as semiconductor, display, mobile, automobile, and so on. Because of they have high durabilities and can be easily introduced functional groups in their molecular structures. PSA perfomances has an effect on their applications in industry process operation, reliability of final products. In this study, PSA performances as a function of fim thickness which is one of the impact factors effects on PSA performances will be investigated using combinatorial methods. Acrylic PSAs are synthesized using 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid. Thickness-gradient of acrylic PSA sample is made by a micro applicator. We compare general coating method with thickness-gradient coating method and evaluate the reappearance of combinatorial methods compared with existing coating method. Thickness-gradient of acrylic PSA sample shows rough and broad data tendency.

  • Toluene-free pressure sensitive adhesives were synthesized by using butyl acrylate (BA), 2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid (AA) as monomers and ethyl acetate as a solvent. The polymerization recipes were designed by changing 1, 3, 5 part per hundreds monomer (phm) of AA content on the basis of 100 BA parts. Two crosslinking agents, ethyl glycol diglycidyl ether (EDGE) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were added to the synthesized polymers to increase adhesion due to crosslinking. In the measurement of properties, holding power, peel strength, and initial tackiness increased with AA content due to crosslinking between carboxyl group in AA and epoxy group in EDGE and isocyanate group in IPDI. In the comparison of two crosslinking agents, EDGE showed better in the three properties than IPDI by better reaction of epoxy group of EDGE to carboxyl group of AA.

  • The pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) were synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers such as butyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, and acrylic acid in the presence of starch as a protective colloid and copolymer. The peel strength and holding power of PSA were increased with starch contents due to the enhancement of gel content, But the initial tackiness of PSA was decreased with starch contents. The contact angle analysis of PSA indicated that the wettability was increased with starch contents owing to the increase of polarity by hydroxy group in starch. In the pH measurement of emulsion with time for biodegradability, the starch in the PSA accelerated the lowering of pH due to the formation of organic acids followed by decomposition of starch.

  • To prepare acrylic type pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarter polymers were synthesized from butylacrylate (BA), 2-ethylhexylacrylate (2-EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (2-HEMA). The quarter polymer was identified by FT-IR. Molecular weight was measured by Gel Pearmeation Chromatograhy. Also, viscosity, solid content and peel strength were investigated. The peel strength was $160g_f/25mm$ when the volume ratio of feed monomer to solvent was 1.3:1 and the ratio was relevant to commercial usage. The pot life of adhesive was 30 s at the 50 m/min of heat treatment rate, and it indicated that the minimum drying time was 30 s. Not only weathering resistance keep up peel strength $160{\sim}180g_f/25mm$ after 1000 h, but also no residual remains.
