The object of this study is to investigate the effect of joinability by using acoustic emission (AE) signals and doing a pattern recognition for weld heat affected zone (HAZ) in tensile testing. This study was carried out an SWS 490A high tension steel for electric shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), $CO_2$ gas arc welding and TIG welding. And correspondingly, the root openings are 3, 4 and 2.8mm. The results of the tensile test of weld HAZ come out electric shield arc welding > $CO_2$ gas arc welding > TIG welding in case of single welding. It is believed that this is a phenomenon where difference of its root opening or base metal thickness. Also, the technique of AE is ideally suited to study variables which control time and stress dependent fracture or damage process in metallic materials.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) cable has good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, the anchorage of CFRP cable is a big issue due to the anisotropic property of CFRP material. In this article, a high-efficient bonding anchorage with novel configuration is developed for CFRP cables. The acoustic emission (AE) technique is employed to evaluate the performance of anchorage in the fatigue test and post-fatigue ultimate bearing capacity test. The obtained AE signals are analyzed by using a combination of unsupervised K-means clustering and supervised K-nearest neighbor classification (K-NN) for quantifying the performance of the anchorage and damage evolutions. An AE feature vector (including both frequency and energy characteristics of AE signal) for clustering analysis is proposed and the under-sampling approaches are employed to regress the influence of the imbalanced classes distribution in AE dataset for improving clustering quality. The results indicate that four classes exist in AE dataset, which correspond to the shear deformation of potting compound, matrix cracking, fiber-matrix debonding and fiber fracture in CFRP bars. The AE intensity released by the deformation of potting compound is very slight during the whole loading process and no obvious premature damage observed in CFRP bars aroused by anchorage effect at relative low stress level, indicating the anchorage configuration in this study is reliable.
Steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures have important advantages over conventional concrete structures, however, bond-slip between the steel plate and concrete may lead to a loss of composite action, resulting in a reduction of stiffness and fatigue life of SCS sandwich structures. Due to the inaccessibility and invisibility of the interface, the interfacial performance monitoring and debonding detection using traditional measurement methods, such as relative displacement between the steel plate and core concrete, have proved challenging. In this work, two methods using piezoelectric transducers are proposed to detect the bond-slip between steel plate and core concrete during the test of the beam. The first one is acoustic emission (AE) method, which can detect the dynamic process of bond-slip. AE signals can be detected when initial micro cracks form and indicate the damage severity, types and locations. The second is electromechanical impedance (EMI) method, which can be used to evaluate the damage due to bond-slip through comparing with the reference data in static state, even if the bond-slip is invisible and suspends. In this work, the experiment is implemented to demonstrate the bond-slip monitoring using above methods. Experimental results and further analysis show the validity and unique advantage of the proposed methods.
Real-time characterization of the rock thermal deformation and fracture process provides guidance for detecting and evaluating thermal stability of rocks. In this paper, time -frequency characteristics of acoustic emission (AE) and electromagnetic radiation (EMR) signals were studied by conducting experiments during rock continuous heating. The coupling correlation between AE and EMR during rock thermal deformation and failure was analyzed, and the microcosmic mechanism of AE and EMR was theoretically analyzed. During rock continuous heating process, rocks simultaneously produce significant AE and EMR signals. These AE and EMR signals are, however, not completely synchronized, with the AE signals showing obvious fluctuation and the EMR signals increasing gradually. The sliding friction between the cracks is the main mechanism of EMR during the rock thermal deformation and fracture, and the AE is produced while the thermal cracks expanding. Both the EMR and AE monitoring methods can be applied to evaluate the thermal stability of rock in underground mines, although the mechanisms by which these signals generated are different.
A newly developed method based on energy is presented to study the damage pattern of FRP material. Basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) is employed to monitor the damage under fatigue loading. In this study, acoustic emission technique (AE) combined with scanning electronic microscope (SEM) technique is employed to monitor the damage evolution of the BFRP specimen in an approximate continuous scanning way. The AE signals are analyzed based on the wavelet transform, and the analyses are confirmed by SEM images. Several damage patterns of BFRP material, such as matrix cracking, delamination, fiber fracture and their combinations, are identified through the experiment. According to the results, the cumulative energy (obtained from wavelet coefficients) of various damage patterns are closely related to the damage evolution of the BFRP specimens during the entire fatigue tests. It has been found that the proposed technique can effectively distinguish different damage patterns of FRP materials and describe the fatigue damage evolution.
The continuous chip generated in cutting process deteriorates workpiece, tool, and machine tool system. It is necessary to treat this continuous chip in ductile material machining condition for stable cutting. This paper deals with the chip control method using acoustic emission(AE) signal in pure copper turning operation. AE raw signals, root mean square(RMS) signals and wavelet transformed signals measured in turning process are introduced to analysis for chip patterns. With analysis of AE signals, it is obtained that the produced chip patterns are correlated with the specified AE signals which are transformed by fuzzy pattern algorithm. By this experimental investigation, the chip patterns can be classified at significant level in pure copper machining process and controlled from continuous chips to reduced-length stable chips.
Nowadays, the crank shaft motor vehicle has become essential as the important component. The machining precision was asked for manufacturing the shaft. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional are welding. Both in-process quailty control and high reliability of the weld are the major concerns in applying friction wlding to the economical and qualified mass-production. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is avaliable at present to determine the real-time evaluation of automatic production quality control for bar-to-bar friction welding of the crank shaft of O.D 24mm for motor vehicle. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the bar-to-bar welded joints of O.D. 24mm shaft as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding, resulting in practical possiblility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro structural defects.
Optical fiber sensors have been proven that they have the potential to detect high-frequency ultrasonic signals, in structural health monitoring field which generally refers to acoustic emission signals from active structural damages and guided waves excited by ultrasonic actuators and propagating in waveguide. In this work, the sensing properties of optical fiber sensors based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer were investigated in the metal plate. Analytical formulas were conducted first to explore the parameters affecting its sensing performances. Due to the simple and definable frequency component, the Lamb wave excited by the piezoelectric wafer was employed to study the sensitivity of the proposed optical fiber sensors with respect to the frequency, rather than the acoustic emission signals. In the experiments, according to above investigations, spiral shape optical fiber sensors with different size were selected to increase their sensitivity. Lamb waves were excited by a circular piezoelectric wafer, while another piezoelectric wafer was used to compare their voltage responses. Furthermore, by changing the excitation frequency, the tuning frequency characteristic of the proposed optical fiber sensor was also investigated experimentally.
PRAIRIE(Propeller Air Induced Emission) system is a kind of underwater radiated noise suppression systems to reduce the probability of the identification or classification of our warship's acoustic signature by an enemy ship. It is effective in case of strong cavitation events. This is because air bubbles emitted from the PRAIRIE system mitigate drastic collapses of the cavity bubbles that can generate an intense shock wave. However, when the PRAIRIE system is operated in a non or weak cavitation condition, it might increase the total level of underwater radiated noise and induce the acoustic signatures. Therefore, this paper presents the trial results on ventilation control of PRAIRIE to find a more efficient operation depend on the cavitation condition. Then, we show a variation of the amplitude modulation characteristics according to ventilation control.
