Pressure vacuum measurement technique using acoustic impedance change of ultrasonic transducers was studied. The sensor has been setup using two air-coupled ultrasonic transducers, one as a transmitter and the other as a receiver, and put it into vacuum chamber and measured pressure versus ultrasonic amplitude. The result confirms that the standard deviations of four repeat measurements were from 0.0093 to 0.3325 at pressure 6.66 kPa to 202.65 kPa(about two atmosphere), and the relative percents were 0.018% and 0.164% at pressure 133.32 kPa and 202.65 kPa, respectively.

In the ultrasonic dispersion, in order to avoid direct contact of the radiation surface of ultrasonic transducers with a liquid sample, the liquid sample is separated by a glass container and it receives ultrasonic energy through an acoustic medium. The transmission efficiency of the ultrasonic energy in the multi-layered ultrasonic system is an important factor. In this study, we suggested a method that can improve the ultrasonic energy transfer efficiency by using a propylene glycol solution as a liquid matching layer in the multi-layered acoustic system. In this method, a propylene glycol solution was filled between the Langevin-type ultrasonic transducer and the luminol solution and the sonoluminescence phenomena in the luminol solution, which is caused by nonlinear effect of high power ultrasound radiated from the transducer, was examined by using a Photo Multiplier Tube (PMT). The transmission efficiency depending on the concentration of propylene glycol solution was observed, and we can see that as the concentration of the propylene glycol solution increased, the matching effect increased while the acoustic attenuation increased. It was confirmed that there is an optimal concentration compromised these two conflicting conditions, and the optimum concentration of the propylene glycol solution was determined experimentally.

In the field application of the conventional acoustic nonlinear technique using through transmission of bulk waves to evaluate the contact acoustic nonlinearity(CAN) in solid-solid contact interfaces like as in the closed crack, it has difficulty to access inner position for attaching the pulsing or receiving transducer. In the present study, a new reflection technique has been suggested to measure the acoustic nonlinearity in solid-solid contact interfaces, which uses both of pulsing and receiving transducers on the same side of target and so that it will be very useful for the field application. For this, based on the linear and the nonlinear contact stiffness estimated by the power-model of the contacting pressure, the nonlinear parameter of the reflected ultrasonic wave at the interfaces has been theoretically calculated. Experimental results in contact interfaces of A1606l-T6 alloy specimens with loading pressure showed good agreement with the theoretical predictions, which proves the validity of the suggested reflection mode technique.

As the interest in ocean environment monitoring and ocean development has been increased, the need for researches on underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) and low power consuming acoustic modem for UWSN has been arisen. In this paper, we design and implement a micro-modem equipped with a tiny and omnidirectional transducer for underwater acoustic communications. In addition, we make experiments in a water tank and a pond in order to verify the performance of the developed modem in terms of supply voltage and communication distance, and analyze the results. According to the outdoor experiments, the modem can send data wirelessly in underwater at a distance of 40 meter with a data rate of 200 bps and a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$ when the supply voltage is 12 V. Due to its small size, low power consumption and omnidirectional property, it is expected that the modem which is implemented in this paper could be utilized for various applications based on UWSN.

In spite of many studies of the acoustic field visualization by using sonoluminescence phenomena, the visualization method has not been used widely because it needs high acoustic intensity to get the luminescence intensity enough to observe. Recently, the digital camera with high resolution and big memory makes it possible to get the digital image data even though the brightness of the image is too weak to observe with naked eyes. In this study we investigated the variation of sonoluminescence intensity with the acoustic intensity from an ultrasonic transducer. From this result, the inverse function, which makes the tendency of the variation to linear, was obtained. Using the order of the inverse function, we can expect a matching function. Applying the matching function to digital image data, the distribution of the histogram could be controlled appropriately and the image from relatively weak acoustic intensity could be enhanced by the method.
We have investigated on the development of 2-2 type piezocomposites that have better piezoelectric activity and lower acoustic impedance than those of conventional piezoceramics. In this study, we have investigated the piezoelectric and acoustic properties of 2-2 type piezocomposites sensor which was fabricated using dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fraction of PZT. The specific acoustic impedance of 2-2 type piezocomposites decreased linearly when PZT volume fraction was decreased. The resonance characteristics measured by an impedance analyzer(HP4194A) were similar to the analysis of finite element method (FEM). The resonance characteristics and the electromechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. It also showed the highest result from the standpoint of sensitivity, bandwidth and ring-down property and so on at the same condition. The specific characteristics show that the 2-2 type piezocomposites turned out to be superior to the ultrasonic sensor composed by single phase PZT.
The objective of this study was to construct multi-element ultrasound applicators for the treatment of gynecologic cancer with high dose rate brachytherapy. For the treatment of uterus, piezo-ceramic crystal transducer (PZT -5A) with outer diameter of 4 mm, wall thickness of 1.3 mm, and length of 24.5 mm was selected. For the treatment of cervix or vagina, it should be possible to insert the applicator into the vagina. Thus, a cylindrical PZT -8 material with outer diameter of 24.5 mm, wall thickness of 1.3 mm, and length of 15.2 mm was selected. The operating frequencies determined by vector impedance measurement were 3.2 MHz for the PZT 5A cylinder (OD=4 mm) and 1.7 MHz for the PZT -8 cylinder (OD: 24.5 mm). The ratios of generated acoustic output power to applied electric power were 33% and 61% for the tandem type crystal and the cylinder type crystal, respectively. The radiated acoustic pressure fields from both transducers were calculated using a Matlab code and measured in water using hydrophone. There was good agreement between measured and calculated acoustic pressure field distribution. For a tandem type transducer, the calculated acoustic pressure field decreased from 0.023 MPa at 10 mm to 0.010 Mpa at 30 mm, the reduction of 57%. For the cylinder type transducer which will be used for the treatment of vagina showed 78% reduction at 15 mm and 66% at 25 mm as compared to values at 5 mm from the surface. Based on the characteristics of the transducers, this study demonstrated the possibility of using the crystals as a heating source. Finally, a 3-element and 4-element prototype applicators were constructed. The 3-element applicator is 75 mm long and 4 mm thick and will be used for the treatment of uterus. The 4-element applicator is 61 mm long and 24.5 mm thick and will be used for the treatment of vagina. Using these applicators, it is possible to generate enough power to increase temperature to therapeutic level.

The response characteristics of the PZT transducers during glass capillary breakage were studied at the epicenter of the glass plate. The PZT transducers had been made by using EC-65 PZT ceramics(supplied by Edo co.) with a constant area and a various thickness. The theoretical displacement and velocity at the epicenter of glass plate with an air boundary condition were calculated by assuming the point load of 1N force strength and a rise time of 280 ns with a ramped functional dependence, and the 1st pulses of the PZT transducer may be considered as the vertical velocity incident on the electrode of the PZT ceramic. The responses of the PZT transducer may be depended on the thickness mode of the PZT ceramic below 0.33 in the ratio of the thickness to the diameter of PZT ceramic, but the reponse of the PZT transducer may be depended on the other modes of PZT transducer in the addition of the thickness mode of the PZT ceramic above 0.33. The full time of half maximum at the 1st pulse was nearly 280 ns without a variation of applied breakage load and the resonant frequency of the PZT transducer, and then may be considered as the rise time of a AE source. The maximum amplitude of the 1st pulse depended on the incident vertical velocity and capacitance of the PZT transducer. Therefore, the full time of half maximum and maximum amplitude of the 1st pulse may be considered as the rise time and strength of acoustic emission source respectively.
The implantable middle ear hearing devices(IMEHDs) have been developed to overcome the conventional hearing aid's problem(ringing effect caused by the acoustic feedback, cosmetic problem, etc.). In the IMEHDs, the vibrating transducer is a key component because its vibration enables to hear for hearing impaired people. The vibrating transducer is implanted on ossicular chain by surgical operation. The coupling status between implanted transducer and ossicular chain has an effect on delivering vibrating force from transducer to stapes. Noninvasive method is required to investigate the output characteristics of IMEHDs after implementation. Recently, emitted sound pressure measuring method of tympanic membrane is proposed to investigate the output characteristics of IMEHDs. However, the relationship between displacement of stapes and sound pressure by tympanic membrane was not cleared. In this paper, displacement of stapes and sound pressure by tympanic membrane were measured using the differential floating mass transducer(DFMT) that implanted on the ossicular chain of the human temporal bone and physical ear model. Through the experiments results, the relationship between displacement of stapes and sound pressure by tympanic membrane was investigated.

Guided wave technology is advantageous for fast inspection of pipe wall thinning since the guided wave propagates long distance. In this investigation, the method to evaluate gradual wall thinning in a pipe based on the arrival time delay with magnetostrictive patch transducers is presented. Low frequency A0 Lamb waves were generated and measured by the present transducer and it was applied to arrival time delay measurement experiments on a test pipe having gradual wall thinnings artificially manufactured. From experiments, consistent results that wall thinning increases the arrival time delay of A0 waves were obtained. Consequently, the feasibility of the magnetostrictive patch transducers to evaluate wall thinning was verified.
