A noise transfer function(NTF) is the frequency response function between an input force applied to an exterior point of a vehicle body and the resultant interior sound pressure usually measured at the driver's ear position. It represents the measure of noise sensitivity for the output force transmitted to the joints between the body and chassis. The principle of vibro-acoustic reciprocity is often utilized in the measurement of NTF. One difficulty in using the volume source is that most of the previously proposed methods require the knowledge of the volume velocity of the acoustic source in advance. A new method proposed in the present work does not require any calculation related with the volume velocity of the acoustic source, but still yields even more accurate results both in the amplitude and phase of the NTF. In the present work, the new method is applied to obtain NTF data for a midsize sedan.
This paper describes the acoustic analysis of mid duty truck. The focus of the analysis is on structure borne engine noise with major contributions of 2nd order. It has been previously recognized that the noise contribution of each transfer path of structure borne noise can be varied with the charateristics of each mounts and vibro acoustic sensitivity of car body. The structure of car body will be split up into three major sub components, which are modeled separately, the engine, the frame and the cab. The acoustic performance is evaluated on three levels: engine to frame transfer, frame to cab transfer, and panel contribution from cab to driver. In order to perform these analyses, analytical models are created for the engine, frame, cab and acoustic cavity. The models are linked through a coupled fluid structure calculation, and through FRF Based Substructuring for the structural couplings. Based on the structural coupling calculations, a transfer path analysis is performed to identify the most important transfer paths. These paths are then the focussing points for applying modifications to the structure or the mount system. Finally, a number of modification are proposed and their effect is quantified.
This paper describes the correlation between the interior noise and the trunk wall vibration. Using the vibro-acoustic reciprocity, effect of the trunk wall vibration on the compartment noise is investigated on a medium size car. In the low frequency range, vehicle interior noise is dominated by several acoustic modes of the passenger compartment and the vibration modes of the surrounding shell parts. Especially, vibration of the trunk wall radiates sound and it is transferred through holes on the package tray into the passenger compartment. This paper experimentally reveals that sound can be well produced at some particular vibration modes of the trunk lid and it strongly influences the compartment noise through package tray holes. Contributions of the trunk walls to the interior noise are estimated by measuring the acoustic-structural transfer function, based on the vibro-acoustical reciprocity theorem.
It has been shown that the principal subspace-based multichannel Wiener filter (MWF) provides better performance than the conventional MWF for suppressing interference in the case of a single target source. It can efficiently estimate the target speech component in the principal subspace which estimates the acoustic transfer function up to a scaling factor. However, as the input signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) becomes lower, larger errors are incurred in the estimation of the acoustic transfer function by the principal subspace method, degrading the performance in interference suppression. In order to alleviate this problem, a principal subspace modification method was proposed in previous work. The principal subspace modification reduces the estimation error of the acoustic transfer function vector at low SIRs. In this work, a frequency-band dependent interpolation technique is further employed for the principal subspace modification. The speech recognition test is also conducted using the Sphinx-4 system and demonstrates the practical usefulness of the proposed method as a front processing for the speech recognizer in a distant-talking and interferer-present environment.
A computationally-efficient approach to the calculation of the transient field of an acoustic radiator was developed. With this approach, a planar or curved source, radiating either continuous or pulsed waves, is divided into a finite number of shifted and/or rotated versions of an incremental source such that the Fraunhofer approximation holds at each field point. The acoustic field from the incremental source is given by a 2-D spatial Fourier transform. The diffraction transfer function of the entire source can be expressed as a sum of Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the incremental sources with the appropriate coordinate transformations for the particular geometry of the radiator. For a given spectrum of radiator velocity, the transient field can be computed directly in the frequency domain using the diffraction transfer function. To determine the accuracy of the proposed approach, the impulse response was derived using the inverse Fourier transform. The results obtained agree well with published data obtained using the impulse response approach. The computational efficiency of the proposed method compares favorably to those of the point source method and the impulse response approach.
In this paper, using a transfer function-based analytical model, major factors influencing the acoustics and combustion instability in a two-stage duct system composed of a nozzle and a combustor were derived and their quantitative effects were evaluated. From the acoustic analysis, it was confirmed that the change in reflection coefficient and mean flow could have a great influence on the instability growth rate, and the area ratio and speed of sound ratio between the nozzle and the combustor are also key parameters to determine combustion instability as well as flame transfer functions.
Active control of sound radiation(using active structural acoustic control) from a vibrating rectangular plate by a steady-state harmonic point force disturbance is experimentally studied. Control structural input are achieved by two piezoceramic actuators bonded to the surface of the panel. Two accelerometers are implemented as error sensors. Estimated radiated sound signals using vibro-acoustic path transfer function are used as error signals. The vibro-acoustic path transfer function represents system between accelerometers and microphones. The control approach are based on a multi-channel filtered-x LMS algorithm. The results demonstrate that attenuation of sound levels of 3dB, 13dB are achieved.

The effect of sound on the heat transfer from an isothermal cylinder in cross flow is investigated by numerical analysis. The modeling is made for the laminar incompressible flow fluctuating in the range of the Reynolds number, 5.leq.Re.leq.35, by the sinusoidal acoustic field. The instantaneous response of the flow and heat transfer is simulated for various frequencies. It is shown that the heat transfer amplitude decreases and the phase lags behind the flow velocity with increase in the frequency. The time-mean effects of the acoustic field on the flow field and heat transfer, known as the acoustic and thermoacoustic streaming, are analyzed. The time-mean heat transfer coefficients are decreased around the forward stagnation point but increased in the wake region. Such a local difference in heat transfer coefficients is a function of the frequency and becomes greatest at some frequency. However, with balance between the local increase and decrease, the overall heat transfer coefficient is almost unaffected by sound.

Quantification of road noise is a challenging issue in the development of tire noise since its transfer paths are complicated. In this paper, a simplified model to estimate the road noise is developed. Transfer path of the model is from wheel to interior. The method uses the wheel excitation force estimated throughout inverse method. In inversion procedure, the Tikhonov regularization method is used to reduce the inversion error. To estimate the wheel excitation force, the vibration of knuckle is measured and transfer function between knuckle and wheel center is also measured. The wheel excitation force is estimated by using the measured knuckle vibration and the inversed transfer function. Finally interior noise due to wheel force is estimated by multiplying wheel excitation force in the vibro-acoustic transfer function. This vibro-acoustic transfer function is obtained throughout measurement. The proposed method is validated by using cleat excitation method. Finally, it is applied to the estimation of interior noise of the vehicle with different types of tires during driving test.

In this paper, a sound quality indices for the evaluation of vehicle intake and exhaust noise were developed through a correlation analysis of objective measurement data and subjective evaluation data. At first, intake and exhaust orifice noise were measured at the wide-open throttle sweep condition. And then, acoustic transfer function between intake orifice noise and interior noise at the steady state condition was measured. Also, acoustic transfer function for exhaust system was measured as the same method. Simultaneously, subjective evaluation was carried out by the paired comparison and semantic differential method by 27 engineers. Next, the correlation analysis between the psycho-acoustic parameters derived from the measured data and the subjective evaluation was performed. The most critical factor was determined and the corresponding sound quality index for the intake and exhaust noise was obtained from the multiple factor regression method. At last, the effectiveness of the proposed index was investigated.
