  • The bubble size distribution is critical information to understand sound propagation and ambient noise in the ocean. To estimate the bubble size distribution in a bubbly water, the sound attenuation has been only in the conventional acoustic bubble sizing method without considering the sound speed variation. However, the effect of the sound speed variation in bubbly water cannot be neglected because of its compressibility variation. The sound attenuation is also affected by the sound speed variation. In this paper, a coherent acoustic bubble sizing inverse technique is introduced as a new bubble sizing technique with considering sound speed variation as well as the sound attenuation. This coherent sizing method is theoretically verified with the bubble distribution functions of single-size, Gaussian, and power-law functions. Its numerical test results with the coherent acoustic bubble sizing method show good agreement with the given bubble distributions.

  • Vehicle interior noise is the results of numerous sources of excitation. One source involving tire pavement interaction is the tire cavity resonance and the forcing it provides to the vehicle spindle. Using a simplified model for the tire acoustic cavity system only, we formulated finite element equation to predict the fundamental acoustic cavity resonant characteristics inside tire-wheel assembly of undeformed and deformed tire. Combining the finite element analysis with experimental verification, we explained the acoustic characteristics theoretically. Especially, we have shown that the difference between the first two resonant frequencies increases as the deformation of tire due to vertical load increases.

  • This paper criticizes S. Kim (1992), claiming that the perception of place cues in the reduced stop consonant clusters ('reducing' means 'cutting off' the acoustic silence in stop clusters) largely depends on the acoustic characteristics such as formant transition and noise frequency distribution of stop burst, rather than the closure duration time as advocated by S. Kim (1992). The claim is based on the perception test conducted upon 111 stimuli over 10 subjects. The finding is that, when the closure duration is cut off up to the point where only one stop is perceived, place of the second stop, not the first one, in the cluster is in most cases perceived regardless of the places of the first and second stops. It is likely that the place cues of the stop in the prevocalic position mask those in the postvocalic position.

  • Demand for now nondestructive evaluation are growing to detect fatigue crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments especially when they are In non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in fatigue and tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time-frequency analysis methods. The main frequency range is different in the noise and the fatigue crack propagation. It could be classified that it were also generated by composite fracture mechanics of cleavage, dimple, inclusion separation etc.

  • Condition monitoring(CM) is a method based on Non-destructive test(NDT). Therefore, recently many kind of NDT were applied for CM. Acoustic emission(AE) is widely used for the early detection of faults in rotating machinery in these days also. Because its sensitivity is higher than normal accelerometers and it can detect low energy vibration signals. A machine tool consist of many parts such as the bearings, gears, process tools, shaft, hydro-system, and so on. Condition of Every part is connected with product quality finally. To increase the quality of products, condition monitoring of the components of machine tool is done completely. Therefore, in this paper, acoustic emission method is used to detect a machine fault seeded in a gearbox. The AE signals is saved, and power spectrums and feature values, peak value, mean value, RMS, skewness, kurtosis and shape factor, were determined through Matlab.

  • Acoustic microscopy has attracted much intrest recently as potential mondestructive evalution technique for detecting and sizing defects of surface and sub-surface. Also acoustic emission testing method has been developed for detecting microcracks which is more than 30 umm in length quintitatively on ceramics material. In the present paper, acoustic emission during the four point bending test in hot-pressed sintered Si$\_$3/N$\_$4/ specimen which was stressed bythermal shock has been measured by high sensitive sensing system. The surface and sub-surface cracks were detected by scanning acoustic microscope of 800 MHz and conventional ultrasonic testing in C-scope image. The purpose was to investigate the location and size of cracks by SAM and AE technique, whose experimental datas demontrates good agreement for detecting microcracks.

  • Recently, two reverberation rooms were built up of 300mm thick concrete walls in non-parallel pentagonal shape to measure the sound absorption, transmission, radiation, and impact insulation of acoustical materials, panels, doors, etc. Various acoustic tests, including the sound transmission test, were carried out to investigate their acoustic performances. In order to improve the performance, several modifications on these acoustical parameters, such as the acoustic mode, the position of specimen, the formation of diffuse field, the location of sound source, and flanking transmission, have been conducted. Through a series of tests, the reverberation rooms have been effectively improved so that it could perform a variety of acoustic tests with the international standard. And then, it is expected to be very helpful in developing the low noise design technology for ships.

  • Corrosion of prestressed concrete structures is one of the main challenges that engineers face today. In response to this national need, this paper presents the results of a long-term project that aims at developing a structural health monitoring (SHM) technology for the nondestructive evaluation of prestressed structures. In this paper, the use of permanently installed low profile piezoelectric transducers (PZT) is proposed in order to record the acoustic emissions (AE) along the length of the strand. The results of an accelerated corrosion test are presented and k-means clustering is applied via principal component analysis (PCA) of AE features to provide an accurate diagnosis of the strand health. The proposed approach shows good correlation between acoustic emissions features and strand failure. Moreover, a clustering technique for the identification of false alarms is proposed.

  • The aim of this study is to provide fundamental data for acoustic design by analyzing the room acoustic characteristics according to the PA system used in the school gymnasium. The measurements were carried out accordance with the ISO 3382. The sources used in this study were four types; omni-directional, centralized, distribution, the combination of centralized and distribution sound source system. Omni-directional system is recommended by ISO for the acoustic test and the others are installed on the wall, column and ceiling in the school gymnasium for sound reinforcement.
