  • Near-field acoustic holography is a powerful tool to visualize sound sources. This method requires pressure measurement at many points for a good hologram. Thus one has to measure carefully so that errors due to the uncertainty of position, sensor mismatch, and so on are reduced. A method to solve this problem is to use a well-designed measurement system. This paper introduces a sound visualization system at center for noise and vibration control (NOVIC), KAIST, and addresses the advantages in terms of the error reduction. The system consists of array microphones, array jigs, a system to control the position and the velocity of the jigs, a data acquisition system, and a monitoring system. This paper also shows some sound visualization results when the system is applied to a speaker and a computer. The results verifies that the sound visualization system is useful for identifying sound sources.

  • The self-noise from blade cascade at off-design points mainly comes from separated boundary layer and vortex sheddings, and is also dependent on blade shape. If the incidence angle to the cascade increases, the stalling in blades may occur and the noise level increases significantly. The hybrid method using acoustic analogy was employed to compute the far-field noise spectra and directivity patterns from the separated vortex shedding at off-design points of the cascade of impeller. This paper is compared with the experimental data of a stationary cascade in the same conditions. The simulated result is in excellent .agreement with the measured data except th slight under-prediction near the maximum radiation angle for a dipole sound.

  • Community noise has been serious social issues in Korea. This paper reviews current statistics and status on railway noise, with practical engineering tools in order to reduce the noise level from railway traffic noise sources. At the beginning, guidelines of the current environmental policy are discussed, with the new policy on railway noise to be enforced beginning in 2007 with 5 year schedule. Then, a noise reducer is proposed as a tool to reduce noise levels protecting people living near at the railway. Details on the acoustic effect in field test are discussed with the result of implementation in the street. We propose noise reducers as an effective and practical tool for the people who are exposed to rail traffic noise in cities.

  • Optimal transducer positions are important as much as the control algorithms and hardware performance in the active noise control system. This study is similar to the past researches on the optimal transducer locations but with a far field noise source having a plane wave characteristic and the noise coming through an opening such as a window in an enclosure. Optimization techniques are used to find sets of optimal loudspeaker positions from a larger possible loudspeaker positions. Loudspeakers are placed on the surface of opening at the wall and inside of the enclosure. Using the measured acoustic transfer impedances and numerical simulations with the optimization technique, optimal positions are identified and compared. When a small number of loudspeakers are used. loudspeaker positions on the opening near the center seems to be the best place, but when a larger number of loudspeakers are used it was difficult to find simple patterns in the optimal positions. With the optimally positioned loudspeakers, optimal microphone positions are also studied.

  • In this paper, BSR noise from an instrument panel of a vehicle are investigated with integrated experimental methods. First, potential source regions of the instrument panel for BSR are localized by using the module-excitor and near-acoustic field visualization system. Then, subjective evaluation of BSR nosie from the detected potential noise source regions is made with the Zwicker's loudness and time-varying loudness methods.

  • To numerically construct the sound fields by a plenum fan mostly found in Air-Handling Unit (AHU), the Kirchhoff-BEM approach was applied to the near-field data of a turbo fan. The scattering effects were found to be significant by the plenum box structure for high-frequency components of source. The directivity petterns and sound pressure levels were also dependent upon the helmholts number which must be considered of the design stage for sound reduction program.

  • Microphone array is designed to measure the equivalent source height of vehicle noise. The equivalent source position is defined for an arbirary distribution of acoustic sources above a perfectly reflecting plane and a microphone array for its measurement is developed. The normalized errors of the measured equivalent source heights are defined including the effects of background noise, the geometric near field, and source size. Normalized errors of the measured source heights obtained by a nemerical simulation for each parameter lead to optimization of the microphone spacing and to the design of an array which gives the equivalent source height as a function of frequency. The performance of the designed array is verified using the stationary loudspeaker experiments.

  • It seems inevitable for residential buildings to be high-rise and allocated near traffic roads due to the overcrowding in urban area. Acoustic environment in those area has been seriously deteriorated by the increase of traffic vehicles. Commonly used sound barriers have a limitation in controlling noise due to diffraction noise of sound barrier. Hence sound barrier is not effective to attenuate noise especially for the residential units in high level. This work aims at evaluating noise reduction according to the tunnel section shape by using 1/5 scale model. We carried out a number of field measurements for 1/5 scale model of Noise Barrier Tunnel with various sectional shape. The results from predictions and the measurement show generally good agreement.

  • As with the disappearance of a living room window due to the trend in apartment housing construction that prefers a larger, expanded living room, the sound insulation performance of the balcony window is becoming an important factor to determine the level of indoor noise at an apartment unit. Considering that the indoor noise inside an apartment unit is mandated by law at or below 45dB(A), the balcony window is increasingly assuming an even more important role. Sound insulation performance of the window was measured by examining differences in data involving varying angles of incidence of the sound source as obtained from the same balcony window. Also, acoustic intensity measuring was performed at and around the window to determine its sound insulation quality. Results of measuring on the sound source's angles of incidence indicated that the performance showed some differences in lower frequency ranges, though with no significance. Intensity measuring results showed that the sound insulation performance was reduced near the connection part of the window and the window frame.
