  • A series of the studies on the applied physical properties of domestic species have been conducted last three years. Pinus densiflora was one of the three species examined for the first year. Because the same apparatus and experimental procedures were used for all species, their results can be easily comparable. The experiments for sorption property were conducted with 20- and 80-mesh wood powder and resulted in their EMC's and sorption isotherms at various heating conditions. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and electric resistance and volumetric electric resistivity were measured with a thermal-wire device and a high electric resistance meter. The differences of the thermal and electric properties between quarter- and flat-sawn specimens were observed, which was partially attributed to their anatomical differences. An acoustic measurement system was used to evaluate dynamic MOE and internal friction. This paper provides the useful fundamental data for designing a wood structure, correcting a portable resistance-type moisture meter, and nondestructive testing wood.

  • Bubbles generated by various causes in the ocean are known to persist for long periods of time. Although the volume occupied by bubbles in the ocean is small, the presence of bubbles in ocean due to resonance and attenuation greatly affects the acoustic properties. Accordingly, bistatic reverberation experiment was performed in the ocean where artificial bubbles exist. A number of transducers and receivers were installed on 6 buoys arranged in a hexagonal shape, and blowing agents were dropped in the center of the buoy to generate bubbles. For reverberation modeling that reflects acoustic characteristics changed by bubbles, the spatial distribution of bubbles was estimated using video data and received signals. A measurement-based bubble spectral shape was used, and it was assumed that the bubble density within the spatial distribution of the estimated bubble was the same. As a result, it was confirmed that the bubble reverberation was simulated in a time similar to the measured data regardless of the bubble density, and the bubble reverberation level similar to the measured data was simulated at a void fraction of about 10-7 ~ 10-6.8.

  • The present study investigated the sounds at 13 points in the four districts in Cheongju including commercial district, historic district, urban walking district and university campus in order to realize the soundscape of the city. In order to this, questionnaire survey was conducted to 65 citizens and 5 acoustic experts on sites to find both sound loudness and annoyance of each district. At the same time, information about loud, unpleasant, preferred and representative sound of each district were acquired by selecting three from 35 sounds which consist of natural, artificial and machinery sounds. As a result, it was found that there is a very close correlation between sound loudness and annoyance. Through the analysis of sounds at each district, it was revealed that machinery sounds dominate in commercial area as figure sound, It was also shown that artificial and natural sounds dominate in historic area, artificial sounds in both urban area and university campus respectively. Laboratory listening tests were undertaken to 20 people using recorded sounds and video captured on site. The results denote that machinery and artificial sounds are regarded as most loud, machinery sounds as most unpleasant, natural and artificial sounds as most pleasant which shows similar tendency of on-site evaluation.

  • Prior to proposing appropriate standard for subway station platform, this study conducted field measurements to examine characteristics of room acoustics on platform of two subway stations. As a result of analyzing the longitudinal length of the platform, Sound Pressure Level (SPL) decreased (maximum difference : 14 dB), Reverberation Time (RT) tended to increase (maximum difference of 0.8 s ~ 1.5 s), and C50 and D50 were decreased (maximum difference: 5.9 dB ~ 9.1 dB and 31.8 % ~ 37.6 %, respectively) as measurement positions moved away from the sound source. The Interaural Cross-correlation Coefficient (IACC) did not show clear tendency, but it was lower than 0.3 in entire points. It is judged that the subway platform has non-uniform sound field characteristics due to various combinations of direct and reflective sound even though it is finished with a strong reflective material. This indicates that the room acoustic characteristics of the near and far sound field are clearly expressed depending on the source-receiver distances in the subway platform having a long flat shape with a low height compared to the length. Therefore, detailed architectural and electric acoustic design based on the characteristics of each location of speaker and sound receiver in the platform is required for an acoustic design with clear sound information at all positions of the platform.

  • Interfacial evaluation and durability of Jute and Hemp fibers/polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated. Moisture content of various treated conditions were measured by thermogravimetic analyzer (TGA). After boiling water test, mechanical properties and IFSS between Jute, Hemp fibers and PP matrix decreased. On the other hand, work of adhesion increased due to swelled fibril by water. Surface energies of Jute and Hemp fibers before and after boiling water test were obtained using dynamic contact angle measurement. IFSS was not always consistent with thermodynamic work of adhesion. In boiling water case, since Jute and Hemp fibers could be swelled by water, surface area and moisture infiltration space increased. Environmental effect on microfailure modes of Jute or Hemp fibers and Jute or Hemp fibers/PP composites were obtained by observing via optical microscope and by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) events and their AE parameters. After boiling water test, unlike Hemp fiber, microfailure process of Jute fiber could occur due to low tensile strength by swelled fibril. In addition, AE events occurred more and AE amplitude and energy became lower than those of before boiling water test.

  • The occurrence of cavitation on the propeller is directly linked to the naval ship's survivability, and it is necessary to design a propeller shape that delays the cavitation inception. However, the propeller cavitation can occur under various operating conditions, thus it is important to identify whether the propeller cavitation exists during operation as well as in the design phase. To this end, it is necessary to use noise or vibration signals on board to monitor the cavitation inception. In this study, a hydrophone and an accelerometer were installed on the ship hull right above the propeller to compare the performance of analyzing cavitation inception between acoustic and vibration signals. Also, a high speed camera was used to visually observe the occurrence of cavitation through an observation window. The measured results showed that the spectral shapes between acoustic and vibration signals were different, but the level increases at each frequency band and the overall level of the frequency band from 1 kHz to 10 kHz showed a similar tendency. The Detection of Envelope Modulation On Noise (DEMON) analysis also showed similar results for both acoustic and vibration signals, confirming that both hydrophones and accelerometers can be utilized in the analysis of cavitation inception.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of crack opening and closure in the AE activities during fatigue test. Laboratory experiment using various materials and test conditions were carried out to identify AE characteristics of fatigue crack propagation. Compact tension specimens of 2024-T4 and 6061-T6 aluminum alloy were prepared for fatigue test. AE activities were analyzed based on the phase of the loading cycle. Generally, most of AE were generated when the crack begins' opening and the crack closes fully, whereas a few in the pull opening of the crack. Also AE activity in the peak loading of cycle was different with each specimen. However, in the same material, AE activity was not affected by the change of cyclic frequency (0.1, 0.2, 1.0Hz). It was found that AE activities during crack opening and closure depend on material properties such as micro-structure, tensile strength and yield strength.

  • Clinically, it is almost impossible for a physician to distinguish subtle changes of frequency spectrum by using a stethoscope alone especially in the early stage of thrombus formation. Considering that reliability of mechanical valve is paramount because the failure might end up with patient death, early detection of valve thrombus using noninvasive technique is important. Thus the study was designed to provide a tool for early noninvasive detection of valve thrombus by observing shift of frequency spectrum of acoustic signals with computer aid diagnosis system. A thrombus model was constructed on commercialized mechanical valves using polyurethane or silicon. Polyurethane coating was made on the valve surface, and silicon coating on the sewing ring of the valve. To simulate pannus formation, which is fibrous tissue overgrowth obstructing the valve orifice, the degree of silicone coating on the sewing ring varied from 20%, 40%, 60% of orifice obstruction. In experiment system, acoustic signals from the valve were measured using microphone and amplifier. The microphone was attached to a coupler to remove environmental noise. Acoustic signals were sampled by an AID converter, frequency spectrum was obtained by the algorithm of spectral analysis. To quantitatively distinguish the frequency peak of the normal valve from that of the thrombosed valves, analysis using a neural network was employed. A return map was applied to evaluate continuous monitoring of valve motion cycle. The in-vivo data also obtained from animals with mechanical valves in circulatory devices as well as patients with mechanical valve replacement for 1 year or longer before. Each spectrum wave showed a primary and secondary peak. The secondary peak showed changes according to the thrombus model. In the mock as well as the animal study, both spectral analysis and 3-layer neural network could differentiate the normal valves from thrombosed valves. In the human study, one of 10 patients showed shift of frequency spectrum, however the presence of valve thrombus was yet to be determined. Conclusively, acoustic signal measurement can be of suggestive as a noninvasive diagnostic tool in early detection of mechanical valve thrombosis.

  • Uniaxial stress in ail axisymmetric body is the simplest example of ultrasonic stress measurement. However, the birefringence theory cannot be applied for axisymmetric solids because the axisymmetric stress field in the body does not make shy velocity difference in SH waves propagating in the axisymmetric direction. Conventional ultrasonic technique using the time-of-flight method also needs ultrasonic lengths of the unstressed and stressed body, which is very impractical. In this paper, the birefringence effect in axisymmetric solids under uniaxial stress is formulated to evaluate the axial stress inside the solid without measuring tile ultrasonic length. Theoretical derivation for the birefringence characteristics in the axisymmetric solids is made using the longitudinal and shear waves instead of two horizontally polarized shear waves. Tension test is conducted for carbon-steel specimen to measure the birefringence coefficient and investigate the validity of the theory. It is observed from experimental results that the velocity difference in two differently polarized acoustic waves is proportional to the uniaxial stress in the axisymmetric solid with a good agreement with the theoretical value.

  • This study developed a practical two-microphone impedance tube method to measure the sound transmission loss of sound isolation materials without the use of an expensive reverberation room or an acoustic intensity probe. In order to evaluate the validation and applicability of the two-microphone impedance tube method, sound transmission losses for several sound isolation materials with different surface density and bending stiffness were measured, and the measured values were compared with the results from the reverberation room method and the theory. From the experimental results, it was found that the accuracy of sound transmission loss obtained by the impedance tube method depends upon the diameter size of the impedance tube (i.e., tested sample size). For sound isolation materials having relatively large bending stiffness such as acryl, wood, and aluminum plates, it was found that the impedance tube method proposed by this study was not valid to measure the sound transmission loss. On the other hand, for sound isolation materials having relatively small bending stiffness such as rubber, polyvinyl, and asphalt sheets, the comparisons of transmission loss between the results from the impedance tube method and the theory showed a good agreement within the range of the frequencies satisfying the normal incidence mass law. Therefore, the two-microphone impedance tube method proposed by this study can be an effective measurement method to evaluate the sound transmission loss for soft sound isolation sheets having relatively small bending stiffness.
