  • This paper describes principles and experimental results in conjunction with examining the possibility of the detection of effects from a cylindrical objects. Cylindrical objects have its own resonance frequency. The frequency varies according to the diameter, length etc. And acoustic sound, whose frequency and the harmonic components corresponding to resonance frequency, is radiated from the object. When an object have defect in itself, the radiated acoustic sound is different from normal one. So we can detect its defect by analysing frequency components of acoustic sound. We proved that detection of defective objects by acoustic signal analysis is possible automatically. Also the result can be applied to other kinds of objects.

  • The toxic, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) caused by the Cochlodinium polykrikoides have a serious impact on the coastal waters of Korea. In this study, the acoustic detection system was developed for rapid HABs detection, based on the acoustic backscattering properties of the C. polykrikoides. The developed system was mainly composed of a pulser-receiver board, a signal processor board, a control board, a network board, a power board, ultrasonic sensors (3.5 and 5.0 MHz), an environmental sensor, GPS, and a land-based control unit. To evaluate the performance of the system, a trail was done at a laboratory, and two in situ trials were conducted: (1) when there was no red tide, and (2) when there was red tide. In the laboratory evaluation, the system performed well in accordance with the number of C. polykrikoides in the received level. Second, under the condition when there was no red tide in the field, there was a good correlation between the acoustic data and sampling data. Finally, under the condition when there was red tide in the field, the system successfully worked at various densities in accordance with the number of C. polykrikoides, and the results corresponded with the sampling data and monitoring result of NFRDI (National Fisheries Research & Development Institute). From the laboratory and field evaluations, the developed acoustic detection system for early detecting HABs has demonstrated that it could be a significant system to monitor the occurrence of HABs in coastal regions.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel double-talk detection (DTD) technique based on soft decision in the frequency domain. In the proposed method, global near-end speech presence probability (GNSPP) considering the statistical model assumption and voice activity detection (VAD) decision of the near-end and far-end signal are applied to the DTD algorithm in the frequency domain instead of the traditional hard decision scheme using cross-correlation coefficients. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the objective test under various environments, and yields better results compared with the conventional scheme.

  • The unstable signature that is defined as frequency change with respect to the time or frequency modulation, is caused by the external loading variation in specific machinery component and Doppler shift etc. In this study, we analyze the generation mechanism of the unstable signature and apply the Extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm for its detection. The performance of Extended Kalman Filter is examined for numerical and measured signals and the results show its validity for unstable signature detection.

  • In succession of the previous works, seismo-acoustic analysis was conducted to collect ground truth events and to discriminate surface explosions from natural earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula for 2004. In this period, total 510 seismo-acoustic events corresponding to 10.8 percent of total seismic events occurred in and near the Korean Peninsula were analyzed and discriminated as artificial surface explosions. Events distribution of the seismo-acoustic events in 2004 is similar to the previous results of 1999-2003. And newly determined seismo-acoustic events were added to the surface explosions database. To extend infrasound detection capability, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) and Southern Methodist University (SMU) installed new seismo-acoustic array (BRDAR) in Baekryoung Island last November, 2004. The array configuration and design is nearly same to previous seismo-acoustic arrays CHNAR, KSGAR, a triangular 1 km aperture. BRDAR consists of 5 short period vertical seismometers (GS-13) in seismic vaults and 13 microbarometers (Chaparral Model 2). Preliminary analysis using data collected from BRDAR shows an extension of infrasound detection capability to western part of the Korean Peninsula. Also, multiple observations of infrasound at BRDAR and other arrays gave an opportunity to localize sound source regions.

  • For obtaining high speed data rate, underwater acoustic communication has several problems by the different environmental problem. To achieve high speed data rate, a method of multiple antennas have been researched. V-BLAST Algorithm is a detection method applied to terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, BER performance of VBLAST detection for MIMO system is analyzed in the paper.

  • This study was conducted to develop an automatic egg inspection system for detecting creaked eggs based on acoustic impulse response. This system includes a sound generator, a sound sensor with signal conditioner, and a computer. The sound generator that hit the sharp of the dull edges of an egg was constructed with a ceramic ball pendulum attached to a rotary type solenoid. The signal conditioner included a pre-amplifier and a digital signal processing (DSP) board. The parameters for distinguishing cracked and normal eggs were the area, the geometric centroid and the resonance frequency of power spectrum of the acoustic signal generated. An algorithm for on-line detection of the continuous transferring eggs was developed. The performance tests resulted with 91% success rate to separate cracked and normal eggs at the rate of 1 second per an egg.

  • This paper presents fault detection in cables. We developed the device for detecting pinpoint location of faults in power cables using acoustic method. The proposed device consists of hardware and software for the fault detection. Using the device, we explain how to detect the pinpoint of faults and introduce that the other method use the time delay between electro-magnetic and acoustic signals for the pinpoint of the faults.

  • For sodium cooling liquid metal reactors during the last 25 years, it was most important to verify the safety of the steam generator, which absolutely requires a water leak detection system with fine sensitivity and response. This study describes the structure and leak classification of the HAMMER (Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor) steam generator, compared with other classifications, and explains the effects of leak development. The requirements and experimental situations for the development of the KALIMER acoustic leak detection system (KADS) which detects micro leaks, not intermediate leaks, are introduced. We proposed four frequency bands, 1∼8kHz, 8∼20kHz, 20∼40kHz and 40∼200kHz, split effectively for analyzing the detected acoustic leak signals obtained from the sodium-water reaction model or water model in the mock-up system.
