  • Naval ships are particularly required to maintain acoustic and magnetic silence due to their operational characteristics. Among them, underwater magnetic field signals derived by ships are likely to be detected by threats such as surveillance systems and mine systems at close distance. In order to increase the survivability of the vessels, various techniques for reducing the magnetic field signal are being studied and it is necessary to consider not only the magnitude of the magnetic field signal but also the gradient of it. In this paper, we use the commercial electromagnetic finite element analysis tool to predict the induced magnetic field signal of ship's scaled model, and arrange the degaussing coil. And the optimum degaussing current of the coil was derived by applying the particle swarm optimization algorithm considering the gradient constraint. The validity of the optimal degaussing technique is verified analytically by comparing the magnetic field signals after the degaussing with or without gradient constraint.

  • In this study, the injector transfer function (ITF) of a gas-gas coaxial jet-swirl injector is measured by applying excitation to jet or swirl flow using a loudspeaker. As a result of measuring the ITF according to the variation of feed system length, the ITF peak occurs at the resonance frequency of the space where the perturbed flow passes. When applying the excitation to the jet flow, as the jet flow increases up to 56 slpm, the magnitude of ITF decreases, and ITF increases thereafter. Therefore the larger the velocity difference between the jet and the swirl flow, the larger the ITF. In the case of the swirl excitation, the ITF decreases as the jet flow increases because of the decrease of the energy with respect to the constant flow at the downstream. This difference is caused by the location of the hot wire anemometer on the downstream of the injector center axis.

  • In the development phase of a torpedo, the effectiveness analysis is carried out to predict the performance and to learn how to use the torpedo. In order to obtain reliable data, it is required to model the tactical situation closely to the actual one. Because the submarine is a target of a lightweight torpedo, the anti-torpedo countermeasures of a submarine such as evasive maneuvering and TACM (Torpedo Acoustic Counter Measure) should be modeled in detail. In this paper, the evasive maneuvering is modeled reflecting the movement characteristics of the submarine. Furthermore various TACMs such as a floating-type decoy, a self-propelled decoy and jammers are also modeled. Then, effectiveness of a lightweight torpedo is measured and analyzed using the simulation program which is developed through the above modeling procedure.

  • Due to the rapid development of wireless networking system, researches on the communication devices are mainly focus on microwave frequency devices such as filters, resonators, and phase shifters. Among them, Film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) has been paid extensive attentions for their high performance. In this research, ZnO thin films were deposited by RF-magnetron sputtering on Al/$SiO_2$/Si wafer and then crystalline properties and surface morphology were examined. To measure crystalline structure and surface morphology X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were employed. It was showed that crystalline properties of ZnO thin films were strongly dependant on the deposition conditions. As increasing the deposition temperature and the deposition pressures, the peak intensities of ZnO(002) plane were increased until $300^{\circ}C$, then decreased rapidly. At the sputtering conditions of RF power of 213 W and working pressure of 15 m Torr, ZnO film had excellent c-axis orientation, surface morphology, and adhesion to the substrate. In conclusion we optimized smooth surface with very small grains as well as highly c-axis oriented ZnO film for FBAR applications.

  • Nowadays, implantable hearing aids have been developed to solve the problems of conventional hearing aids. In case of fully implantable hearing aids, an implantable microphone is necessary to receive sound signal beneath the skin. Normally, an implantable microphone has poor frequency response characteristics in high frequency bands of acoustic signal due to the high frequency attenuation effect of skin after implantation to human body. In this paper, the implantable microphone is designed to reduce the high frequency attenuation effect of a skin by putting its resonance frequency at the attenuated range through a finite element analysis (FEA) simulation. The designed implantable microphone through the simulated results has been fabricated by manufacturing process using bio-compatible materials. By the several in-vitro experiments with pig skin, it has been verified that the designed implantable microphone has a resonance frequency around the starting part of the attenuated range and reduces the attenuation effect.

  • The inductively coupled plasma(ICP) etching process was selected to fabricate RF Surface Acoustic Wave(SAW) filters and a Pt thin film was sputtered on a $LiTaO_3$ substrate applied to electrode materials to reduce the spurious response and improve the power durability. Steep sidewall pattern was achieved employing $C_4F_8/Ar/Cl_2$ gas chemistry. We investigated an etching mechanism and parameter dependence of the Pt thin film about $C_4F_8$ addition. Sidewall etch angle was about $80^{\circ}$ at the $C_4F_8$ 20% mixing ratio. Fabricated SAW filter is consists of some series and parallel arm SAW resonators which work as impedance elements and show capacitance characteristics at out of the passband. It can be modified for $800{\sim}900\;MHz$ RF filters. External matching circuits were unnecessary.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has developed an advanced fast reactor concept, KALIMER-600, which satisfies the Generation IV reactor design goals of sustainability, economics, safety, and proliferation resistance. The concept enables an efficient utilization of uranium resources and a reduction of the radioactive waste. The core design has been developed with a strong emphasis on proliferation resistance by adopting a single enrichment fuel without blanket assemblies. In addition, a passive residual heat removal system, shortened intermediate heat-transport system piping and seismic isolation have been realized in the reactor system design as enhancements to its safety and economics. The inherent safety characteristics of the KALIMER-600 design have been confirmed by a safety analysis of its bounding events. Research on important thermal-hydraulic phenomena and sensing technologies were performed to support the design study. The integrity of the reactor head against creep fatigue was confirmed using a CFD method, and a model for density-wave instability in a helical-coiled steam generator was developed. Gas entrainment on an agitating pool surface was investigated and an experimental correlation on a critical entrainment condition was obtained. An experimental study on sodium-water reactions was also performed to validate the developed SELPSTA code, which predicts the data accurately. An acoustic leak detection method utilizing a neural network and signal processing units were developed and applied successfully for the detection of a signal up to a noise level of -20 dB. Waveguide sensor visualization technology is being developed to inspect the reactor internals and fuel subassemblies. These research and developmental efforts contribute significantly to enhance the safety, economics, and efficiency of the KALIMER-600 design concept.

  • PVDF(poly vinylidene fluoride) and P(VDF-TrFE)(poly vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene) are the typical piezoelectric polymers with unique properties. Even they are inferior to conventional piezoelectric ceramics PZT in electromechanical conversion efficiency and interior loss, though they are superior in receiving sensitivity and frequency bandwidth. Their acoustic impedances are relatively close to water or biological tissue and it is easier to make thin film than other piezoelectric materials. Futhermore, the film is so flexible that it is easy to attach on a complex surface. Those properties are suitable for the ultrasound transducers which are useful for medical and biological application, so that various types of polymer transducers have been developed. In this paper, several important considerations for design and fabrication of piezoelectric polymer transducers were described and their effect on the transducer performance were demonstrated through the KLM model analysis. Then, it was briefly reviewed about the structures of the polymer transducers developed for obtaining images as well as the characteristics of the images in several important medical and biological application fields.
