  • Background: Septoplasty with turbinate surgery is common surgical treatment in patients with septal deviation and chronic hypertrophic rhinitis. The aim of this study was to evaluation objective outcomes of septoplasty with turbinate surgery by analysis of subjective symptom score with objective acoustic rhinometric test before and after surgery, prospectively. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 45 adult patients which were done septoplasty with bilateral turbinectomy or turbinoplasty and followed up at least 3 months by one rhinologist from November 1999 to April 2000, prospectively. We analyzed subjective symptom score, minimal cross-sectional area (MCA), C-notch cross-sectional area, and total volume of both nasal cavity before and after surgery. Correlation test was studied between symptom improvement and acoustic rhinometric results. Results: Twenty nine cases were male and sixteen cases female. The average age was 26.9 year-old (range: 17 to 57 years). There was significantly improvement of symptom score in postoperative 3 months (p<0.05). There was significantly increased C-notch cross-sectional area and total volume in postoperative 3 months. Symptoms improvement were associated with acoustic rhinometric profiles, but, there was not significantly correlation. Conclusion: Septoplasty with turbinate surgery is considered to be effective for nasal obstruction in patients with septal deviation and turbinate hypertrophy. Acoustic rhinometric test is favorable objective test for evaluation of symptom improvement after septal surgery.

  • For an analysis of some Helmholtz resonators, it is likely to be more appropriate to consider acoustic field within cavity than just the 1-DOF analogous model. However, a design method that considers increased parameters than the lumped model. is not a trivial process due to the trade-off effect among the parameters. In this paper. the genetic algorithm. one of the optimization technique that rapidly converges to global fittest solution and robust convergence. is applied to the design process of Helmholtz resonators. Results show that the genetic algorithm can be successfully and efficiently used to find the resonant frequencies for both lumped model and distributed model.

  • Active noise control (ANC) is a method of cancelling a noise signal in an acoustic cavity by generating an appropriate anti-noise signal via canceling loudspeakers. The continuous progress of ANC involves the development of improved adaptive signal processing algorithms, transducers, and DSP hardware. In this paper, the convergence behavior and the stability of the FxLMS algorithm in ANC systems with real-time implementation is proposed. Specially, The advanced DSP H/W with dual core(DSP+ARM) and API(application programming interface) S/W programming was developed to improve the real-time implementation performance under the FxLMS algorithms of input noise such as road noise environment. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

  • An experimental model to enhance the mixing of parallel supersonic-subsonic jet ($M_1$=1.78 and $M_2$=0.30) is simulated with a numerical technique by modeling the wall-mounted cavity to a boundary condition of oscillating pressure. The computed pilot pressure distributions along three representative cross sections show a good agreement with the equivalent experimental data. The irradiation of acoustic wave in the ultrasonic range causes the mixing augmentation of jet and wake due to the transfer of vibration energy between fluid particles.

  • Low frequency exhaust noise of marine diesel engine is one of the most important noise sources in vessels. However, conventional absorptive silencers are ineffective to control exhaust noise because of low absorption in the low frequency range. In the paper, exhaust noise control of marine diesel engine was studied by using the hybrid silencer, which was composed of virtually divided array of concentric hole-cavity resonators and conventional absorptive silencer. A series of tests including field tests were performed to investigate the acoustic performance of the hybrid silencer. Consequently, its high performance of 5${\sim}$10 dB noise reduction in the low frequency range was confirmed and it is expected to be very helpful in reducing the exhaust noise of marine diesel engine.

  • In this study, the interior acoustic field of a speaker system with rectangular closed cavity and its effect on the impedance and the sound pressure reponses are investigated by applying the finite element method to the rectangular enclosure. Based on a good agreement with the theoretical and the experimental, it is founded that FEM is useful method for the development of a speaker system generating the diverse mode.

  • An experimental model of the advanced mixing control in the parallel supersonic-subsonic mixing jet (M$_1$=1.78 and M$_2$=0.30) is numerically simulated. An oscillating wall boundary condition is used as the modeling of a wall cavity for mixing enhancement. The obtained pitot pressure distributions along cross sections at the developing region of the turbulent jets are validated from the good agreement with equivalent experimental data. The similarity solution of dimensional analysis also coincides with this numerical result at the self-similar region sufficiently far from the jet exit.

  • An equivalent electroacoustic circuit approach of estimating the sound absorption coefficient for parallel perforated plate system is proposed. The proposed approach is validated by comparing the calculated absorption coefficients of a parallel single layer perforated plate system with the values measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method for various porosity and cavity depth. • Low frequency exhaust noise of marine diesel engine is one of the most important noise sources in vessels. However, conventional absorptive silencers are limited because the absorptive material is not effective in low frequency range. In the paper, exhaust noise control of marine diesel engine has been studied by using the resonator type silencer, which was composed of concentric hole-cavity resonators. The acoustic performance of the resonator type silencer was verified by the insertion loss measurement considering flow effect. Consequently, its high performance, about $5{\sim}8dB$ noise reduction, in the low frequency range was confirmed by insertion loss measurements conducted in the ship.

  • Frame structures of High speed train are constructed from corrugated panel and aluminum extruded panel, which have high bending stiffness. Transmission loss of those panels, however, is less satisfactory than other panels with same mass per unit area. Therefore, this study predicted transmission loss of aluminum extruded panels using Finite element method. Specifically, we modeled acoustic cavity above a radiation surface and analyzed correlation between T-slot and transmission loss. Moreover, we examined the effect of boundary condition changes of the structure on transmission.
