Sulfonic acid (-SO3H) functionalized mesoporous silica containing HMS, SBA 15(S15), MCM 41(M41) were synthesized by post-synthesis and co-condensation method. Their catalytic performance is tested by dehydration reaction of D-xylose to furfural. As a result, good conversion and selectivity was obtained using water as an environmentally friendly solvent. Additionally, increased amounts of sulfuric acid in catalysts resulted in improved conversion of D-xylose. All of the acid-functionalized mesoporous silica showed higher selectivity than other solid acids such as ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ and zeolite.

Mesoporous silica solid catalysts modified with sulfonic acid were prepared for cationic ring-opening polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4). Two sets of MCM-41 (1.7 and 2.8 nm) and SBA-15 (8.1 and 15.9 nm) with different pore sizes were used as catalyst supports. The surface of silica materials was modified with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane by silylation reaction and oxidized to sulfonic acid. The structures of the prepared catalysts were examined by X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The pore size, specific surface area, and pore volume of the modified solid catalysts decreased slightly. In addition, the modification of the sulfonic acid on the silica surface was confirmed by using infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. To observe the effect of the particle size on the catalytic activity, it was observed with a scanning electron microscope. The catalysts were used to synthesize PDMS through a ring-opening polymerization of D4, and the conversion and polymerization rate of the polymerization reaction depended on the pore size, specific surface area, particle size, and particle agglomeration of the catalysts. In order for the polymerization rate, the catalyst prepared with SBA-15 of 8.1 nm pore size had the fastest reaction rate and showed the best catalytic activity.
Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$), known as one of the major greenhouse gases, is an important component of the earth's atmosphere, and gives rise to precursor of acid rain and photochemical smog. For the removal of $N_2O$ and other nitrogen oxides, the SCR reaction system with various reductants is widely used. This study is based on the results of experimental and theoretical examinations on the catalytic decomposition of sole nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) and selective catalytic reduction of $N_2O$ with $CH_4$ in the presence of oxygen using mixed metal oxide catalysts obtained from hydrolatcite-type precursors. When $CH_4$ is fed together with a reductant, it affects positively on the $N_2O$ decomposition activity. At an optimum ratio of $CH_4$ to $O_2$ mole ratio, the $N_2O$ conversion activity is enhanced on the SCR reaction with partial oxidation of methane.
This work was focused on the synthesis and their catalytic performance on microporous materials having various pore types and dimensions in structures, such as the SAPO-34 and the SAPO-44 with CHA type, the SAPO-17 with ERI type of three dimensional structures, and the ZSM-23 with MTT type of one dimensional structure. Synthesized materials exhibited various acidities and the selectivities to olefin in methanol conversion. As a result, the order of their acid strength was as follows; SAPO-44>SAPO-34>SAPO-17>ZSM-5. On the other hand, the CHA type materials, such as SAPO-34 and SAPO-44, had high selectivity to light olefins(ethylene or propylene), and ZSM-23 with MTT typ of one dimensional structure showed high selectivity to paraffins over $\textrm{C}_{5}$~. This result is a proof that the structure in material had strong influence on catalytic performance. In addition, a surprising result is that the catalytic selectivity to ethylene enhanced on Ni-corporated materials compared with the non-corporated.
Dimethyl ether(DME) was synthesized from synthesis gas by a one-step process in which a hybrid catalyst was used. The hybrid catalyst consisted of Cu-ZnO-$Al_2O_3$ for the methanol synthesis reaction and aluminum phosphate or $H_3PO_4$-modified $\gamma$-alumina for the methanol dehydration reaction. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, FT-IR and $NH_3$-TPD. From the XRD analysis, it was verified that the aluminum phosphate was successfully synthesized. The specific surface areas of the synthesized aluminum phosphates were varied with the ratio of P/Al. The hybrid catalyst in which P/Al ratio of the aluminum phosphate was 1.2 showed the highest CO conversion of 55% and DME selectivity of 70%. There was no remarkable decrease in catalytic activity with the phosphoric acid treatment of $\gamma$-alumina. However, when treated with concentrated phosphoric acid(85%), the catalytic activity and DME selectivity decreased.
The production of isophthalic acid (IPA) from the oxidation of m-xylene (MX) by air is catalyzed by $H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$ (HPW) loaded on carbon and cobalt. We used $H_2O_2$ solution to oxidize the carbon to improve the catalytic activity of HPW@C catalyst. Experiments reveal that the best carbon sample is obtained by calcining the carbon at $700^{\circ}C$ for 4 h after being impregnated in the 3.75% $H_2O_2$ solution at $40^{\circ}C$ for 7 h. The surface characterization displays that the $H_2O_2$ modification leads to an increase in the acidic groups and a reduction in the basic groups on the carbon surface. The catalytic capability of the HPW@C catalyst depends on its surface chemical characteristics and physical property. The acidic groups play a more important part than the physical property. The MX conversion after 180 min reaction acquired by the HPW@C catalysts prepared from the activated carbon modified in the best condition is 3.81% over that obtained by the HPW@C catalysts prepared from the original carbon. The IPA produced by the former is 46.2% over that produced by the latter.

The commercial $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts which had been exposed to the off gas from incinerator for a long time were remanufactured by washing with distilled water and arid solution and reimpregnation with catalytic active components($V_2O_5-WO_3$). The catalytic properties and NOx conversion reactivity of those catalysts were examined by analysis equipment and NOx conversion experiment. Under the experimental condition used in this study, the remanufactured catalysts activated by distilled water ultra sonic cleaning, the catalytic activity was recovered in the range of $66{\sim}93%$ of that of the fresh and the maximum activity was showed when the ultra sonic cleaning time was more than 3 minutes. The remanufactured catalysts by acid solution ultra sonic cleaning, the catalytic activity was recovered in the range of $81{\sim}97%$ of that of the fresh catalyst and the maximum catalytic activity was shooed when the pH of the acid solution was 5. The remanufactured catalysts by reimpregnation with $V_2O_5$ and $WO_3$, the catalytic activity was recovered in the range of $87{\sim}100%$ of that of the fresh catalyst. Maximum catalytic activity was showed when the $V_2O_5$ was reimpregnated more than 1.0 wt %. In this case, the catalytic activity was recovered 97% of that of the fresh catalyst especially at the $150^{\circ}C$ of the experimental temperature.
Lowering surface reflectance of Si wafers by texturization is one of the most important processes for improving the efficiency of Si solar cells. This paper presents the results on the effect of texturing using acidic solution mixtures containing the catalytic agents to moderate etching rates on the surface morphology of mc-Si wafer as well as on the performance parameters of solar cell. It was found that the treatment of contaminated crystalline silicon wafer with $HNO_3-H_2O_2-H_2O$ solution before the texturing helps the removal of organic contaminants due to its oxidizing properties and thereby allows the formation of nucleation centers for texturing. This treatment combined with the use of a catalytic agent such as phosphoric acid improved the effects of the texturing effects. This reduced the reflectance of the surface, thereby increased the short circuit current and the conversion efficiency of the solar cell. Employing this technique, we were able to fabricate mc-Si solar cell of 16.4% conversion efficiency with anti-reflective (AR) coating of silicon nitride film using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and Si wafers can be texturized in a short time.
The gas-phase dehydration of glycerol to acrolein was carried out over 10 wt % HSiW catalysts supported on different supports, viz. $\gamma-Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$, $SiO_2$, AC, $CeO_2$ and MgO. The same reaction was also conducted over each support without HSiW for comparison. Several characterization techniques, $N_2$-physisorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia ($NH_3$-TPD), temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) with mass spectroscopy and CHNS analysis were employed to characterize the catalysts. The glycerol conversion generally increased with increasing amount of acid sites. Ceria showed the highest 1-hydroxyacetone selectivity at $315^{\circ}C$ among the various metal oxides. The supported HSiW catalyst showed superior catalytic activity to that of the corresponding support. Among the supported HSiW catalysts, HSiW/$ZrO_2$ and HSiW/$SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ showed the highest acrolein selectivity. In the case of HSiW/$ZrO_2$, the initial catalytic activity was recovered after the removal of the accumulated carbon species at $550^{\circ}C$ in the presence of oxygen.
In this study, the catalytic reaction characteristics for producing hydrogen using methanol steam reforming were investigated. Nickel and copper are frequently used in steam reforming reaction and methanol synthesis, were used as main active metals. As a support, hydrotalcite has a high specific surface area, excellent porosity and thermal stability, and has weak Lewis acid sites and basic properties. Hydrotalcite was used to identify catalysts of methanol steam reforming with catalytic activity and their properties. In this research, high reactivity was shown in the catalyst of copper metal with high reducibility. And increasing of active metal loading showed the higher the methanol conversion and hydrogen selectivity.
