  • In this study, an electrolyzing device for the production of metal powders was designed and fabricated. The production of copper powders was performed using a variety of current densities, anode-cathode distances and power removal times. The effect of these parameters on powder particle size and shape was determined. Particle size was measured using a laser diffraction unit while the powder shape was determined by SEM. Experimental results show that an increase in current density leads to a decrease in powder particle size. In addition particle shape changed from globular dendritic to acicular dendritic with increasing the current density. Distance between the cathode and anode also showed a similar influence on powder particle size and shape. An increase in time of powder removal led to an increase in powder particle size, as the shape changed from acicular dendritic to globular dendritic.

  • Surface morphology of perithecia of the powdery mildew fungus of mulberry, Phyllactinia corylea is described under scanning electron microscope. The perithecia have penicellate cells on the upper surface and at an average 17 acicular appendages towards the lower surface each emerging from a bulbous base. Many perithecial walls towards the base have shrunken walls. When the perithecia dry out they are pushed above the leaf surface by the acicular append-ages which then bend at the base. The bending of the appendages may be attributed to the shrinkage of lower wall cells due to loss of water.

  • Microstructures and mechanical properties of weldments were studied for EH36 TMCP higher-strength hull steel with electrogas welding jprocess. In case of a newly designed EH36 TMCP steel for large heat input welding process, the Microstructures of HAZ shows more narrow width of grain coarsed region than that of conventional EH36 TMCP weldments, the amount of acicular ferrite, which is beneficial to impact toughness, increased while the amount of grain-boundary ferrite decreased. Charpy V-notched impact tests show that a newly designed EH36 TMCP steel weldment satisfies all the requirement of specifications, especially at the fusion line +2mm where the conventional EH36 TMCP steel fails to exceed the requirement.

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of the high-strength low-alloy steel weld metals with a variation of nickel content were investigated. The weld metals with a variation of nickel content from 2.3 to 3.3 wt% were prepared using Gas Metal Arc Welding process. The amount of acicular ferrite decreased with increasing nickel content; this is accompanied with an increase in the region of bainite and martensite, hence the hardness and tensile strengths were increased with the increase in nickel content, whereas the impact energy was deteriorated.

  • The redox properties of a homogeneously-precipitated $TiO_2$ rutile powder with a BET surface area of ~$200 m^2$/g, consisting of an acicular primary particle, were characterized using photocatalytic reaction in aqueous 4-chlorophenol, Cu-EDTA and Pb-EDTA solutions under ultraviolet irradiation, compared to those of commercial P-25 X$200 m_2$ powder with a spherical primary particle as well as home-made anatase $TiO_2$ powder with ~$200 m^2$/g BET surface area. Here, the anatase powder also includes mainly the primary particles very similar to the acicular shapes of the rutile $TiO_2$ powder. The rutile powder showed the fastest decomposition rate and the largest amount in the photoredor, compared with the anatase or P-25 powder, while the anatase powder unexpectedly showed the slowest rate and the smallest amount in the same experiments regardless of almost the same surface area. From results, the excellent photoredox abilities of this rutile powder appears to be due to specific powder preparation method, like a homogeneous precipitation leading to direct crystallization from the solution, regardless of their crystalline structures even when having the similar particle shape and surface area.

  • Shielded metal arc welding, one-ploe and two-pole submerged arc welding were accomplished to investigate microstructure changes on phase transformation behavior in $60kg/mm^2$ quenched and tempered high strength steel. Microstructures were examined by optical micrograph and TEM. In shielded metal arc welding (oxygen 250ppm), the inclusions were small size (0.3-0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$)and small in number. In submerged arc welding (oxygen 430-529ppm), the inclusions were larger(0.7-2$\mu\textrm{m}$) than that of shielded metal arc welding and large in number. Microstructure mainly depends on number and distribution of inclusions in fusion zone of weld metal. It was noticed that a limited number of inclusions favors the formation of acicular ferrite.

  • Effects of deformation at austenite non-recrystallization region and cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of low carbon (0.06 wt. %) high strength low alloy steels have been investigated. Average grain size decreased and polygonal ferrite transformation promoted with increasing deformation amount due to increase of ferrite nucleation site. As cooling rate increased, the major microstructure changed from polygonal ferrite to acicular ferrite and the fraction of M/A constituents gradually increased. Discontinuous yielding occurred in highly deformed specimen due to the formation of polygonal ferrite. However, small grain size of highly deformed specimen caused lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature than slightly deformed specimen.

  • In this study, constant loading test (CLT) was performed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement resistance for multipass FCA weld metals of 600MPa tensile strength grade. The microstructures of weld metal-2 having the smallest carbon equivalent (Ceq=0.37) consisted of grain boundary ferrite and widmanstatten ferrite in the acicular ferrite matrix. The weld metal-1 having the largest Ceq=0.47, showed the microstructures of grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite and the large amount of bainite (vol.%=19%) in the acicular ferrite matrix. The weld metal-3 having the Ceq=0.41, which was composed of grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite, and the small amount of bainite (vol.%=9%) in the acicular ferrite matrix. Hydrogen desorption spectrometry (TDS) used to analyze the amount of diffusible hydrogen and trapping site for the hydrogen pre-charged specimens electrochemically for 24 hours. With increasing the current density of hydrogen pre-charging, the released amount of diffusible hydrogen was increased. Furthermore, as increasing carbon equivalent of weld metals, the released diffusible hydrogen was increased. The main trapping sites of diffusible hydrogen for the weld metal having a low carbon equivalent (Ceq=0.37) were grain boundaries and those of weld metals having a relatively high carbon equivalent (Ceq: 0.41~0.47) were grain boundaries and dislocation. The fracture time for the hydrogen pre-charged specimens in the constant loading test was decreased as the carbon equivalent increased from 0.37 to 0.47. This result is mainly due to the increment of bainite that is vulnerable to hydrogen embrittlement.

  • This study aimed at investigating quasi-static and dynamic torsional deformation behavior of three API X70 and X80 linepipe steels. Quasi-static and dynamic torsional tests were conducted on these steels. having different grain sizes and volume fractions of acicular ferrite and polygonal ferrite, using a torsional Kolsky bar. The test data were then compared via microstructures and adiabatic shear band formation,. The dynamic torsional test results indicated that the steels rolled in the single phase region had higher maximum shear stress than the steel rolled in the two phase region, because the microstructures of the steel rolled in the single phase region were composed mainly of acicular ferrites. In the X80 steel rolled in the single phase region, the increased dynamic torsional properties could be explained by a decrease in the overall effective grain size due to the presence of acicular ferrite having smaller effective grain size. The possibility of adiabatic shear band formation was analyzed from the energy required for void initiation and variation in effective grain size.
