Ten plots were established to study the vegetation structure of the Songinbong virgin forest in Ullungdo. It was classified into three communities Fagus crenata var. multinervis commnunity, Acer okamotoanum-Fagus crenata var. multinervis community, and Acer okamotoanum community. Shannon's diversity indicies of this area were not high(0.5150~0.8437), due to the geographical and vegetational characteristics. Considering the community structure(importance value, distribution of DBH class, and so on), the vegetation of the Songinbong virgin forest are thought to be stable continuously. With the analysis of plant growth type, it was presumed that Acer okamotoanum have increased after artificial disturbances in this area where Fagus crenata var. multinervis had been dominanat.
We isolated gallotannin, 2,6-digalloyl-1,5-anhydroglucitol, known as acertannin (1), from the barks and xylems of Acer ginnala Maxim. It is a genus of Acer species of shrubs in the family Aceraceae. A. ginnala grows in Korea, Japan and Mongolia. We accomplished the structure elucidation by confirming that the result of $^1H$,$^{13}C-NMR$,MS spectrum data was similar to previous references. We measured DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity in vitro to evaluate anti-oxidative activities on acertannin isolated from A. ginnala. Acertannin from A. ginnala exhibited potent DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. We examined the antioxidant and apoptosis modulative effects. This examination shows that A. ginnala has not only 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity, but also human hair dermal papilla cell protection effects. These results indicate that the barks and xylems of A. ginnala might be developed as a potent anti-oxidant, hair growth agent, and ingredient for related new functional cosmetic materials.
As part of the study of the structure and the successional trends of our temperate forests, a quantitative survey was made of the relatively well conserved forest stands on Mt. Kwanak, Seoul. Three community types were observed; the Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, the Pinus densiflora community, and the Quercus mongolica community. Evidence suggests that the dominance of Pinus densiflora and quercus mongolica will continue in the Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, however, in the Pinus densiflora community the dominant species, Pinus densiflora, is now being replaced by Quercus mongolica. The trend toward an increased in Acer pseudo-sieboldianum var. koreanum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus cordita, and Acer mono is observed in the Quercus mongolica community. An analysis of the overall composition of the forest reveals that the upper story is mostly occupied by Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora, the shrub layer by Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Lespedeza maximowiczii, and the herb layer by Spodiopogon cotulifer and Artemisia keiskeana. Quercus mongolica may cover most part of the forest, gradually excluding Pinus densiflora. Acer pseudo-sieboldianum var. koreanum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus coradata, and Acer mono are increasing in importance with the potentiality of developing into major canopy components. With the diversification of the physical habitat Cephalotaxus koreana and Magnolia sieboldii, the species which had almost completely been eliminated form the forest through the severe interferences, have reappeared.
To find out the temporal and spatial variations in contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral, the sap of Acer mono MAX. were harvested from several regions and periods, and those contents were determined by solvent fractionation, TLC, HPLC and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Most of all the free sugar contained in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was sucrose, with range of 1.35 to 3.41%. The content of total phenolic compound in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was distributed from 0.034 to 0.151 mg/100m1, and most of phenolic acid was phloroglucinol. The contents of Na, K, Ca and Mg were ranged from 24.11 to 33.15, from 13.75 to 22.10, from 47.19 to 88.00 and from 2.48 to 6.31 ppm, respectively. Contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral decreased sharply at the later harvest. Comparing two different methods of the sap harvest, bore method and groove method, the contents of compounds in the study were determined higher with groove method.
The bark of Acer komarovii was collected, ground, and extracted with 70% aqueous acetone to obtain concentrates. The concentrates were suspended in $H_2O$, and then successively partitioned with n-hexane, dichloromethane and ethylacetate to be freeze dried. A portion of ethylacetate fraction was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 and a RP C-18 column with various aqueous MeOH-$H_2O$ (1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:5, 1:7, 1:9, 1:10, 3:1, and 4:1, v/v) eluents. Four compounds were isolated; (-)-epicatechin (9.6 g), procyanidin A2 (epicatechin-($4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8$, $2{\beta}{\rightarrow}O{\rightarrow}7$)-epicatechin) (1.3 g), procyanidin B2 (epicatechin-($4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8$)-epicatechin) (40.0 mg), and cinnamtannin B1 (epicatechin-($4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8$, $2{\beta}{\rightarrow}O{\rightarrow}7$)-epicatechin-($4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8$)-epicatechin) (690 mg). The analysis of the bark procyanidins showed that the basic unit constituting condensed tannins was only (-)-epicatechin. This study, for the first time, report the procyanidins of Acer komarovii bark.
To investigate the structure and the conservation strategy of Nature Ecosystem Preservation Area, 65 plots(10m$\times$10m) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. five group -Larix leptolepis Community, Quercus mongolica-Fraxinus rhynchophylla Community, Fraxinus rhynchophylla-Quercus mongolica community. Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudo-sieboldianum community, Quercus mongolica community were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations was proved between Quercus mongolica and Sorbus of alnifolia, Acer Mono, Lonicera praeflorens, Sorbus commixta ; Acer mono and Lonicera praeflorens, Sorbus commixta ; Maackia amurensis and Acer triflorum ; Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Betula davurica ; Lonicera praeflorens and Cornus controversa, Sorbus commixta ; Acer triflorum and Rhamnus toshinoi ; Pyrus ussuriensis and Prunus padus ; Cornuscontroversa, and Sorbus commixta, and high negative corrlations was proved between Quercus mongolica and Larix leptolepis, Carpinus cordata ; Tilia amurensis and Larix leptolepis, Morus bombycis. Species diversity(H' ) of investigated groups were ranged 0.4443~1.2036.
Employing the relev$\acute{e}$ method of Muller-Dombois & Ellenberg and Braun-Blanquet, 100 plots were sampled in the Quercus mongolica community of Mt. Odae, Mt. Chumbong and Mt. Jungwang in Kangwon-do. To analyze the data, phytosociological method and TWINSPAN were used. 1. Quercus mongolica forests were recognized as Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudosieboldianum community group, and were classified into Quercus mongolica-Carpinus cordata community, Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudosieboldianum typical community, Quercus mongolica-Lespedeza maximocoiczii community and Quercus mongolica-Abies nephrolepis community by phytosociological method. Quercus mongolica-Carpinus cordata community was subdivided into Acer mandshuricum subcommunity and typical subcommunity. 2. According to the classification of TWINSPAN, it was categorized into five groups, such as Quercus mongolica-Acer mandshuricum community, Quercus mongolica-Carpinus cordata community, Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudosieboldianum community, Quercus mongolica-Lindera obtusiloba community, and Quercus mongolica-Abies nephrolepis community. 3. Since the results of phytosociological community classification, which identify five groups of the community, were consistent with that of TWINSPAN, it proved that these two methods could be complement when one do a community classification.
The vegetation structure of Abies holophylla forest was analyzed to provide the information for conservation of Abies holophylla forest at Wol-jong Temple in Mt. Odae national park, southern Korea. The layer structure of Abies holophylla forest was consists of tree layer(2 species), subtree layer(20 species), shrub layer(46 species) and herb layer(87 species), The importance value of Abies holophylla was the highest one 34.09%, and those of Acer pseudo-sieboldianum. Acer barbinerve, Philadelphus schrenckii. Isodon excisus, Acer triflorum, Staphylea bumalda, Carex humilis, Isodon japonicus, Acer mono and Actinidia polygama were 23.07%, 14.44%, 10.72%, 8.49%, 7.80%, 7.65%, 6.79%, 5.76%, 5.47% and 5.41%, respectively, Especially, when predicting succession in Abies holophylla forest, such seedlings were not formed and succession was governed by competition of Acer species, Quercus species and Tilia species of subtree and shrub layer.
The pollen morphology of 19 species and 1 variety of the genus Acer L. in Korea was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The results are as follows ; 1. A. pollen key of the genus Acer L. in Korea was provided in four types. 2. Based on the aperture types and sculpture patterns, the four major pollen types of the genus Acer L. in Korea were recognized which included palmatum, barbinerve, negundo and saccharum types. 3. Pollen grains are tricolpate or tricolporate on the aperture, and striate, rugulate or reticulate on the sculpture pattern. 4. As the result of the correlation analysis between the five measured pollen parameters in pairs, a highly significant positive correlation was found between polar axis length(PL) and colpus length (CL).
Community structure and habitat characteristics of Acer mono stands were studied in Mt. Giri $(127{\circ}35'E.,\;35{\circ}18'N)$ and Mt. $Baekun(127{\circ}38'E.,\;35{\circ}05'N)$. The vegetation was investigated by the Braun-Blanquet's phytosociological method. Distribution of Acev mono was most abundant on eastern and western slopes in valley side. The community structure was composed of 4 layers and average number of species appeared in each quadrat was 24. Habitats were almost covered with exposed rocks and the surface soil was classified to clay loam. The isothermal date lines of Mt. Giri and Baekun were 130 and 120 days, respectively, which is the number of days with mean daily minimum temperature below zero during the year. The daily range of temperature was compared at 4 regions during sap extraction.
