Growth and development of a plant over a growing season is closely related to the daily accumulation of heat. Heat unit measured by accumulated growing degree days (GDD) is becoming increasingly popular to estimate the growth of a plant or even in insect. GDD or heat accumulation per day is measured by calculating average daily temperature and then subtracting the base temperature below which growth does not occur. Heat accumulation per day is added for the desired period and accumulated GDD is determined. The present study was conducted in five seasons in an established garden with K-2, S-36 and V-1 mulberry varieties belonging to Morus indica L. grown under completely irrigated condition at the farm of CSRTI, Mysore during 2001 - 2002. Plants were pruned in each season and the growth of the plant measured by total shoot length and fresh leaf yield was recorded at an interval of 5 days starting from 30 days of pruning (DAP) to 70 days when all the plants were pruned. The accumulated GDD for the corresponding days were recorded and used for analysis. Accumulated growing degree days (GDD) have been found to be perfectly correlated with both growth and yield in all the seasons in all the varieties studied. The high $R^2$ values indicated a strong relationship between the accumulated GDD and, growth and yield of mulberry.
We aimed to estimate the accumulated degree days required for the development of $Cloeon$$dipterum$ (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) in an experimental tub under field conditions from August 7 to October 10 in 2011. After 4 days in a tub setting, a dead female adult was found on the water surface at which oviposition had presumably occurred. Adults emerged from 39 days to 61 days after the oviposition date. The total number of emerged adults was 229, and the sex ratio (number of females : total population) was 0.45, although not statistically significant ($p$ >0.05). The males generally emerged earlier than females. Assuming that the basal temperature ($T_b$) value is $0^{\circ}C$, we estimated the number of accumulated degree days required for the development of $C.$$dipterum$ to be $1,221.8{\pm}116.0$ DD (mean${\pm}$SD). Since the annual number of accumulated degree days in the reference wetland was measured to be 5,650.0 DD, we estimated that $C.$$dipterum$ is multivoltine, with a maximum of 4 cohorts in 1 year in natural habitats.
The effect of full bloom date and growing season weather on harvesting date of 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) in Naju province and the model of multiple linear regression for predicting the fruit growing days was studied. Earlier year in full bloom date, the harvesting date tended earlier but fruit growing days tended longer. Mean and coefficient of variation of fruit growing degree days (GDD) accumulated daily mean and maximum temperature at the base of $0^{\circ}C$ from full bloom date to harvesting date was 3,565, 2.9% and 4,463, 2.5%, respectively. Fruit growing days was not correlated with the fruit GDD accumulated daily mean and maximum temperature at the base of $0^{\circ}C$ in each month but highly correlated with GDD accumulated daily meteorological factors at days after full bloom date. Especially, it was highly negatively correlated with GDD accumulated daily mean and maximum temperature at the base of $0^{\circ}C$ from $1^{st}$ day after full bloom to $60^{th}$ day. The determination coefficient ($r^2$) of multiple linear regression model by full bloom date, GDD accumulated daily mean and maximum temperature from $1^{st}$ day after full bloom to $60^{th}$ day for predicting fruit growing days was 0.7212. As a result, the fruit growing days of 'Niitaka' pear in Naju province can predict with 72% accuracy by the model of multiple linear regression.

Postmortem interval (PMI) is very important in the crime scene investigation. However, it is very difficult to estimate of the interval since death after a decomposition. Recently, there have been various studies on the postmortem interval since a decomposition. In particular, the total body score (TBS) and accumulated degree days (ADD) used to estimate the postmortem interval after a decomposition. This study was conducted with the aim of applying the TBS and ADD to estimate the postmortem interval in real forensic caseworks. In first murder case, TBS was 12 and ADD value was 132, respectively. An estimated time of PMI was around 23:00 on June 21, and the suspect's statement was 01:20 on June 22. Our estimated interval since death and the suspect's statement for the PMI differ by only 2 hours and 20 minutes. In second forensic case, TBS was 3 and ADD value was 55, respectively, an estimated time of PMI was around 02:26 on September 23. The suspect's statement was 10:30 on September 23. Our estimated time and the suspect's statement for the PMI differ by 8 hours. In these cases, we were able to have confirmed the feasibility of TBS and ADD on the real forensic cases. Overall, our finding suggested that the quantitative method could be used to produce PMI estimates that are accurate to within days or even hours.
This study was conducted to identify the air temperature factors that affect leafing date of mulberry (Morus alba) in Buan, Jeonbuk province. Over the period from 2009 to 2014, the leafing date averaged April 24 (114 Julian days). The earliest leafing date was April 12, in 2014, and the latest leafing date was May 2, in 2011. Yearly variations of daily mean temperature (DMT) and daily maximum temperature (DMxT) were high in the last part of March. There were highly negative correlations between leafing date and degree days of accumulated DMT above 0, 5, and $10^{\circ}C$ in the period from March 1 to April 10. Linear regression equations for estimating the leafing date were y = 153.8 - 0.1886 ${\times}$ ($r^2=0.965^{**}$) and y = 126.2 - 0.2246 ${\times}$ ($r^2=0.825^*$) for the degree days of accumulated DMT above $5^{\circ}C$ in the period from March 1 to April 10 and the last part of March, respectively. Therefore, leafing date of mulberry, which is important for popcorn disease control, is 96.5% predicted by degree days of accumulated DMT above $5^{\circ}C$ in the periods from March 1 to April 10.
Influence of soil temperature [accumulated degree-day for the base temperature $5^{\circ}$($\textrm{DD}_5$)] on the development of Meloidogyne arenaria were studied in a winter grown oriental melon greenhouse in Seongju, Korea. Egg masses were first observed on roots at the accumulation of 565 $\textrm{DD}_5$(40 days after transplanting), suggesting that the nematode has completed the first generation in 40 days. Second-stage juveniles (J2) densities were lowest at 863 $\textrm{DD}_5$ in April, first increased at 1,334 $\textrm{DD}_5$ in May, peaked at 2,951 $\textrm{DD}_5$ in July, and decliner thereafter. Development of egg masses and J2 density in soil revealed that M. arenaria could develop in 7-8 generations in a year in the greenhouse. Degree-day monitoring, therefore, could aid to predict nematode development in soil and can be valuable tool a to develop root-knot nematode control strategies.
A oat (Avena sativa) cultivar, 'Guiri 16', was seeded on Oct. 9, Oct. 24, Nov. 9, Nov. 24, Dec. 9 of 1991 and 1992 to determine usefulness of growing degree days (GDD) for predicting growth duration and the optimum seeding date of oats for grains in Cheju province. The later the seeding, the greater the number of days to emergence but the fewer the number of days to heading and maturity. As seeding was delayed, accumulated GDD from seeding to emergence generally tended to decrease but was less subjective to a constant downward tend over seeding date than the number of days. Accumulated GDD from emergence ot heading decreased with delaying seeding and accumulated GDD from heading to maturity decreased as seeding was delayed up to Nov. 24. As seeding was delayed from Oct. 9 to Dec. 9, to Dec. 9, leaf area index at heading decreased from 7.7 to 5.1 and dry matter yield at maturity from 1920 to 823 kg /10a in 1992-1993, and culm length 120 to 89cm on an average of 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. While the number of grains per panicle and test weight were not affected by seeding date in 1991-1992 and 1992-1993, the number of panicles per m$^2$ and grain yield were decreased when oats were seeded earlier or later than Nov. 9. 1000 grain weight was not affected by seeding date in 1991-1992 but greatest at Nov. 9 seeding in 1992-1993. The results indicate that optimum seeding date of oats in Cheju province would be early November. November.
In this study, strawberries were grown during the two cultivation periods (first: 2020-2021, second: 2021-2022) to analyze the effect of the external light environment and growing degree days (GDD) on crop production. The temperature and humidity during day in a greenhouse in each cultivation period were similarly managed. At night, there was a statistical difference in temperature and humidity in the greenhouse between two periods. The accumulated solar radiation during the first cultivation period was high in September and October. Since January, the accumulated solar radiation during the second cultivation period was high. In the second cultivation period, the initial yield was small because the accumulated solar radiation and GDD was small. But accumulated yields and potential maximum yields in second cultivation period were larger than yields in the first cultivation period as the accumulated solar radiation and GDD increased. The sugar contents of strawberry decreased as GDD increased.

The objectives of this study were to select early, late, and abundant flowering trees of black locust from domesticated and introduced cultivars, and prediction of flowering period by calculation of accumulated temperature in spring. Four cultivars (Debreceni-2, Pusztavacs, Jaszkiseri, and Rozsaszin AC) from Hungary and a cultivar from Beijing, China, were introduced, propagated by seed and planted in a seed orchard. For domesticated black locust, 63 cultivars from 10 locations throughout the country were selected and propagated by root cutting. Criteria for selection of domesticated cultivars were abundant flowering, long flowering period, or abundant nectar production with, if possible, straight stems. Accumulated temperature was calculated from data of a nearby weather station by accumulating daily maximum temperature minus 5 degree Celsius from January 1 up to the date reaching 880 degrees. Daily mean temperature was also used to calculate accumulated temperature up to the date reaching 450 degrees. The percentages of two-year and three-year-old flowering trees propagated by root cutting were higher than that of trees propagated by seeds, while four-year-old trees all flowered regardless of propagation methods. Among the domesticated cultivars, all the cultivars from Ganghwa showed abundant flowering with highest nectar production of 6.5 ul per flower, which was 100% more than other domesticated cultivars and 50% more than Debreceni-2 cultivar with highest nectar production among the introduced cultivars from Hungary. At the end of the eight years of observations, two trees of Debreceni-2 cultivars and a tree from Beijing, China were selected for early flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days earlier than average trees, while a tree of Debeceni-2 and three trees from Bejing were selected for late flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days later than average trees. It is possible to extend the flowering period of black locust by 4 to 6 days by planting early and late flowering cultivars together. Abundant flowering trees were unable to be selected due to severe damages by leaf gall midges which killed many trees and reduced the crown size of the remaining trees in the seed orchard, and which were first found in Korea in 2001 and now damaging most of the black locust forests in Korea. The prediction of flowering period by accumulated temperature indicated that black locust flowered to a peak when accumulated daily maximum temperature reached 880 degrees Celsius, and when daily mean temperature reached 450 degrees.
In this study, a newly synthesized thiazolidinedione derivative, TD49 with a highly selective algicide to red tide, was examined in order to evaluate the bioconcentration on aquatic organisms of coast. BAF (accumulation of TD49 by aquatic food chain) and BCF (accumulation of TD49 by sea water) were examined employing the shrimp (Fenneropenaeus chinensis) as the feed organism, and the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus as a consumer in marine ecosystem. Bioconcentration degree in sea water showed that the order in P. olivaceus was viscera > gill > muscle. The average BCF values of TD49 were 67.70, 63.32 and 20.25 at viscera, gill and muscle, respectively. Bioaccumulation degree using feed showed that the order in the organs of P. olivaceus was viscera > gill > muscle. The average BAF values of TD49 were 175.89, 114.88 and 32.59 at viscera, gill and muscle, respectively. When compared with two results, the accumulation by the food and water was higher than that by water. After the elimination experiment in sea water, the TD49 concentration was 2.81 nmole/g in the viscera and were not found in the gill and the muscle. More than 50% of the accumulated TD49 were eliminated from viscera in 7 days and all the accumulated TD49 were eliminated from gill and muscle in 7 days. On the other hand, the octanol/water partition coefficient (log $K_{ow}$) was measured to be 3.66 and experimental BCF of this study was 67.7.
