A total of 120 foreign workers recruited from two shipyards in G city. Self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted from October to December, 2016. As a result, a rate of problem drinking in foreign workers was 39.2%. According to the multiple regression analysis, their problem drinking was significantly influenced by social motives (${\beta}=.368$ p=.003) and conformity motives (${\beta}=.337$ p=.005) as a subscale of drinking motives and homesickness (${\beta}=-.197$, p=.009) as a subscale of acculturative stress, explained 39.5% of the total variance (F=26.849, p=.000). Based on our results, an education program using drinking motives, acculturative stress should be developed to prevent problem drinking in foreign workers.

Methods: Two hundred married immigrant women were recruited from multicultural familysupport centers located in Daejeon City and Chungcheong Province. From July, 2009 to January, 2010, data were collected using self- administered questionnaire. Study instruments were scales for acculturative stress, housewives life stress, support from spouse, and marital satisfaction. Results: Urban married immigrant women had lower levels of acculturative stress and higher levels of support from spouse and more positive marital satisfaction compared to rural women. Both groups reported similar levels of stress in life as a housewife. Factors influencing marital satisfaction in both group were lower levels of acculturative and housewives life stress, higher levels of support from spouse, and living with parents-in-law. Conclusion: Rural married immigrant women may have more problems in adjusting to Korean culture and marriage compared to urban women. Therefore, to improve the physical and psychological wellbeing and marital adjustment of married immigrant women, development of nursing strategies according to area of residence is needed.

  • Purpose: This descriptive study aims to analyze the effects of the satisfaction level in the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, conflicts between them, acculturative stress and stress coping strategies on elderly depression in multi-cultural families. Methods: The survey was conducted on 89 mothers-in-law, aged 65 or older, in multi-cultural families with a foreign daughter-in-law. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, and then were used to conduct t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analyses using the statistical program SPSS 21.0. Results: This study found several factors contributing to depression of mothers-in-law in multi-cultural families. Those factors include living alone without a spouse, poor health, a high level of perceived discrimination and a passive reaction in terms of stress coping strategies. Conclusion: A sense of discrimination perceived by the mothers-in-law having a foreign daughter-in-law implies that the people around them and the community should make efforts to reject distorted perspectives and remove prejudice against foreign daughters-in-law. In addition, the mothers-in-law should receive education and training to use more active and positive stress coping strategies in a stressful situation with the foreign daughter-in-law.

  • This study was conducted to identify acculturative stress in foreign workers in Korea. The data of 123 subjects were collected from January to May, 2010, and analyzed using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program to compare demographic characteristics and acculturative stress. The results: The highest score among 7 subcategories of acculturative stress was homesickness, followed by discrimination. Subjects who had high school diploma were more likely to have acculturative stress than those who were middle school graduates or lower. Those who did not have the community with their homeland people experienced acculurative stress more than those who had. The 7 subcategories showed that those who had homesickness, the sense of being discriminated, culture shock, the homeland community, and the experience of unfair treatment in public had acculturative stress more than their counterparts. Those who did not live with their spouses had homesickness more than the counterpart. Male subjects, those with high school diploma, and those who did not live with their spouses appeared to have guilty feelings more often than their counterparts. The results of this study suggested further studies on foreign workers so that they could adjust themselves well to the Korean society.
