  • The seismic design of embankment dams requires more comprehensive studies to understand the behaviour of dams. Deformations primarily control this behaviour occur during or after earthquake loading. Dam failures and incidents show that the impacts of deformations should be reviewed for existing and new embankment dams. Overtopping erosion failure can occur if crest deformations exceed the freeboard at the time of the deformations. Therefore, crest settlement is one of the most critical deformations. This study developed empirical formulas using Gene Expression Programming (GEP) based on 88 cases. In the analyses, dam height (Hd), alluvium thickness (Ha), the magnitude-acceleration-factor (MAF) values developed based on earthquake magnitude (Mw) and peak ground acceleration (PGA) within this study have been chosen as variables. Results show that GEP models developed in the paper are remarkably robust and accessible tools to predict earthquake-induced crest settlement of embankment dams and perform superior to the existing formulation. Also, dam engineering professionals can use them practically because the variables of prediction equations are easily accessible after the earthquake.

  • The Korean society is recently becoming the aging society at an unprecedentedly rapid speed. Following the increase of the older population, their needs for special care is also rocketing. However, due to the increase of working women, nuclear-families, and old persons living alone, new facilities for the elderly such as nursing home are urgently needed. Thus, many nursing homes for the elderly are also rapidly providing. It is needed to examine if such nursing homes are properly designed for the dependent elderly to live. This study was carried out by the field observation using a checking sheet with measuring and taking photograph. The subjects were 12 nursing homes which gave positive responses for walking through their facilities. The items for observing and measuring were made based on the regulation on improving the facilities for the disabled, the elderly, and the pregnant. Whether each item fits the regulation or not was examined. The 9 areas in each nursing home were examined : entrance, hallway and corridor, stair, elevator, ramp, bed room, shower and locker room, bathroom, and rest room. It was founded that many accessible-related items were met. However, many supportive-related items such as ones for the visual disabled, and many supportive-related and accessible-related ones for bathroom, shower room, and restroom were unmet. In the process of this research, it was founded that the tool for evaluating the design of nursing home in terms of universal design should be developed.

  • Computers and internet have the potential to radically development. But, computer is a just tool by itself. This study is control implement in a way that exploits the capacity of network of processors to execute many tasks concurrently in architectural desigv. The collaboration design system constituted integrated CAD (computer-aided design) system at the base of standardization database environment network and world wide web (WWW). Collaboration design management system is composed of Project Management, Part Management, Process Management , and Appraisement system. They can provide frameworks for effective coordination and management of design work in accordance with the Collaboration Design Support System operating rule accommodatingly. architectural data can be collaboration design environment accessible through a web browser and located at a server. whenever their work investigated each others. Throughout process, the database acted as an individual design and it made them available in realtime. And they can have quick overview of the work. That way a continuous evaluation of best design was distinctly and highly. In the future, New architectural design methods are collaboration environment could result in productivity and quality.

  • The needs of collaboration among design participants spread in different locations is emphasized in the early design stage in order to not only save time and provide places to meet and talk, but also to save cost for those events as well: This is being realized by the Internet, which helps support a networked, integrated real-time multi-user environment. As the base for collaboration activities moves from physical places to cyberspace, the methods of connecting every participant by means of a computer technology have been desired and considered. This study aims at investigating today's collaboration technology in the architectural design process, especially focused on the early stages, in terms of temporal dimensions. In addition, major concepts for and previous efforts and tools of collaborative design have been examined, and a specific recommendation has been proposed for future development of collaborative architectural design systems: That is distributed collaboration, which is accessible and comprehensible to all the professionals in the building design team, which not only allows the sharing of information but also the sharing of understanding, and which facilitates the development of design tools for different aspects of the envisioned collaborative design environment.

  • Universal Design involves designing products and spaces so that they can be used by the widest range of people possible. Universal Design evolved from Accessible Design, a design process that addresses the needs of people with disabilities. This paper introduces the universal design concept through analysis of causes of railway accident within the urban railway station. Railway accident analysis was performed by the internal facilities. We analyzed the standard of accident type, accident cause and accident subject such as elevator, escalator, stairs etc.

  • In the Korean manufacturing industries, it becomes a common practice to carry both design activities and production planning activities concurrently. We should help product design engineers to apply environmental techniques in the design phase. General design engineers are busy enough to provide new technical features and to reduce the product cost. Professionals in the clean technology field should assist the product design engineers by providing the data basis of environmental specifications and appropriate solutions for each product group. This data basis should be easily accessible through internet or other forms appropriate for the personnel computers.

  • This study was intended to suggest the design guidelines of the space for the elderly with dementia. To achieve this, the behavioral characteristics of the elderly with dementia were grasped, and the design cases which were considered and reflected of the behavioral characteristics of the elderly with dementia were examined. Then, the effective space design guidelines which met the behavioral characteristcs of the elderly with dementia were suggested. The behaviors of the elderly with dementia were categorized into cognitive, emotional, and functional behavior. The positive influences of space design on dementia symptom were founded in the planned living environments, accessible and visible location of common space such as living room, soft and homelike interior finishes and lighting, and healing garden. Therefore, the space design for the elderly with dementia should be done on the basis of the dementia symptoms and healing effects.
