  • Recent advances in the internet infrastructure have resulted in a large number of huge Web sites and portals worldwide. These Web sites are being visited by various types of users in many different ways. Among all the web page access sequences from different users, some of them occur so frequently that may need an attention from those who are interested. We call them frequent access patterns and access sequences that can be frequent the candidate patterns. Since these candidate patterns play an important role in the incremental Web mining, it is important to efficiently generate, add, delete, and search for them. This thesis presents a novel tree structure that can efficiently store the candidate patterns and a related set of algorithms for generating the tree structure adding new patterns, deleting unnecessary patterns, and searching for the needed ones. The proposed tree structure has a kind of the 3 dimensional link structure and its nodes are layered.

  • We propose dynamic file allocation method in distributed database management system with changing access patterns. There are a lot of studies on file allocation problem in D-DBMS, and those studies deal with off-line analysis and optimization. Those works are well for systems with static database access patterns, but are inadequate for systems that have changing access patterns. In these systems, dynamic file allocation along with access pattern is more proper. In advance, Brunstrom et al. studied on this area, but they dealt a extremely simplified model. So, we make more practical models to simulate real system. In these models, many factors that were disregard in the advance study are considered. These models are composed with the non-replication system and the replication system. In addition to, we deal with CPU workload balancing in such system in order to improve performance of systems. Our methodology is very simple and realistic, therefore we think that it will give a lot of improvement in D-DBMS with changing access pattern.

  • This paper presents the SIC(Size-Interval-Count) prefetching system that can record the file access patterns of applications within a relatively small space of memory based on the repetitiveness of the file access patterns. The SICPS(SIC Prefetching System) is based on knowledge-based prefetching methods which includes high correctness in predicting future accesses of applications. The proposed system then uses the recorded file access patterns, referred to as "SIC access pattern information", to correctly predict the future accesses of the applications. The proposed prefetching system improved the response time by about 40% compared to the general file system and showed remarkable memory efficiency compared to the previously knowledge-based prefetching methods.

  • This paper presents the SIC(Size-Interval-Count) prefetching scheme that can record the file access patterns of applications within a relatively small space of memory based on the repetitiveness of the file access patterns. Several knowledge-based prefetching methods were recently introduced, which includes high correctness in predicting future accesses of applications. They records the access patterns of applications and uses recorded access pattern information to predict which blocks will be requested next. Yet, these methods require to much memory space. Accordingly, the proposed method then uses the recorded file access patterns, referred to as "SIC access pattern information", to correctly predict the future accesses of the applications. The proposed prefetching method improved the response time by about 40% compared to the general file system and showed remarkable memory efficiency compared to the previously knowledge-based prefetching methods.

  • Public libraries should plan and provide services that satisfy various needs of the local community users. In order to understand library users, it is essential first to grasp the service areas of libraries. The current service areas of public libraries are primarily set based on administrative boundaries of the areas where the libraries are located, which limits the consideration of actual user access patterns to the libraries. In this study, we aim to create service areas that incorporate the transportation and geographical characteristics of the library's surroundings and reflect the access patterns of library users. Specifically, we utilized street network data from 502 libraries in 7 metropolitan cities to determine the travel distance and time from user locations, considering gradients, to the libraries. Subsequently, we applied the shortest path algorithm to generate service areas within a 30-minute walking or driving range. As a result, we confirmed that there are differences in the service area patterns of libraries depending on topographical factors, and this better reflects the realistic conditions of library access compared to service areas based on straight-line distances. This method of generating service areas contributes to a more accurate understanding of library users' numbers, characteristics, and needs.

  • In this paper, we proposed SSL VPN-based network access control technology which can verify user authentication and integrity of user terminal. Using this technology, user can carry out a safety test to check security services such as security patch and virus vaccine for user authentication and user terminal, during the VPN-based access to an internal network. Moreover, this system protects a system from external security threats, by detecting malicious codes, based on behavioral patterns from user terminal's window API information, and comparing the similarity of sequential patterns to improve the reliability of detection.

  • The performance of General-Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is heavily dependent on the memory access behavior. This sensitivity is due to a combination of the underlying Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) execution model present on GPUs and the lack of architectural support to handle irregular memory access patterns. Application performance can be significantly improved by applying memory-access-pattern-aware optimizations that can exploit knowledge of the characteristics of each access pattern. In this paper, we present an algorithmic methodology to semi-automatically find the best mapping of memory accesses present in serial loop nest to underlying data-parallel architectures based on a comprehensive static memory access pattern analysis. To that end we present a simple, yet powerful, mathematical model that captures all memory access pattern information present in serial data-parallel loop nests. We then show how this model is used in practice to select the most appropriate memory space for data and to search for an appropriate thread mapping and work group size from a large design space. To evaluate the effectiveness of our methodology, we report on execution speedup using selected benchmark kernels that cover a wide range of memory access patterns commonly found in GPGPU workloads. Our experimental results are reported using the industry standard heterogeneous programming language, OpenCL, targeting the NVIDIA GT200 architecture.

  • Broadcast has been often used to disseminate the frequently requested data efficiently to a large volume of mobile clients over a single or multiple channels. Conventional concurrency control protocols for mobile transactions are not suitable for the wireless broadcast environments due to the limited bandwidth of the up-link communication channel. In wireless broadcast environments, the server often broadcast different data items with different frequency to incorporate the data access patterns of mobile transactions. The previously proposed concurrency control protocols for mobile transactions in wireless broadcast environments are focused on the mobile transactions with uniform data access patterns. However, these protocols perform poorly when the data access pattern of update mobile transaction are not uniform but skewed. The update mobile transactions with skewed data access patterns will be frequently aborted and restarted due 4o the update conflict of the same data items with a high access frequency. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient concurrence control protocol for mobile transactions with skewed data access as well as uniform data access patterns. Our protocol use a random back-off technique to avoid the frequent abort and restart of update mobile transactions. We present in-depth experimental analysis of our method by comparing it with existing concurrency control protocols. Our performance analysis show that it significantly decrease the average response time, the amount of upstream and downstream bandwidth usage over existing protocols.

  • As compared with VOD data, NOD article data has the following characteristics: it is created at any time, has a short life cycle, is selected as not one article but several articles by a user, and has high access locality in time. Because of these intrinsic features, user access patterns of NOD article data are different from those of VOD. Thus, building NOD system using the existing techniques of VOD system leads to poor performance. In this paper, we analysis the log file of a currently running electronic newspaper, show that the popularity distribution of NOD articles is different from Zipf distribution of VOD data, and suggest a new popularity model of NOD article data MS-Zipf(Multi-Selection Zipf) distribution and its approximate solution. Also we present a life cycle model of NOD article data, which shows changes of popularity over time. Using this life cycle model, we develop LLBF (Largest Life-cycle Based Frequency) prefetching algorithm and analysis he performance by simulation. The developed LLBF algorithm supports the similar level in hit-ratio to the other prefetching algorithms such as LRU(Least Recently Used) etc, while decreasing the number of data replacement in article prefetching and reducing the overhead of the prefetching in system performance. Using the accurate user access patterns of NOD article data, we could analysis correctly the performance of NOD server system and develop the efficient policies in the implementation of NOD server system.

  • In recent years, with the development of portable terminals, various searching services on large data have been provided in portable terminals. In order to search large data, most applications for information retrieval use indexes such as B-trees or R-trees. However, only a small portion of the data set is accessed by users, and the access frequencies of each data are not uniform. The existing indexes such as B-trees or R-trees do not consider the properties of the skewed access patterns. And a cache stores the frequently accessed data for fast access in memory. But the size of memory used in the cache is restricted. In this paper, we propose a new index based on disk, called J-tree, which considers user's search patterns. The proposed index is a balanced tree which guarantees uniform searching time on all data. It also supports fast searching time on the frequently accessed data. Our experiments show the effectiveness of our proposed index under various settings.
