A concrete carbonation model has been constructed that takes account of the diffusion of carbon dioxide through a coating and reaction with calcium hydroxide, and this model has been validated by an accelerated carbonation experiment. (1) By using values for the coatings calculated on the basis of a diffusion.permeation theory as input data for the analysis of diffusion.reaction carbonation in an unsteady state, the effect of the coatings in reducing carbonation can be represented with high accuracy. (2) Through a sensitivity analysis of the diffusion.reaction carbonation model and the experimental results, we found that the diffusion coefficient of calcium hydroxide shows a high interrelationship at 1e-12($m^2/s$). The reaction rate constant for carbonation shows a high interrelationship at 5e-5($m^3/mol/s$).
The low-durability performance of concrete structure occurs by interactive deterioration factors. In particular, carbonation increased with its time elapse is known as the general manner of deterioration characteristics. Recently, the fundamental researches of the carbonation mechanism, besides method and technique for durability improvement of deteriorated structure are advanced actively. So in this paper, alkali-recovery and maintenance performance when the impregnating alkalization agents are used, are compared and examined quantitively with the basis of past proposed study. As a result, alkali-recovery performance be ensured by impregnating alkalization agent on the carbonated concrete which has low pH by accelerated carbonation test. And alkali maintenance performance was effected by the finishing materials on the alkali recovered concrete.
Recently, some mathematical models for the prediction on progress of carbonation of concrete were reported. These models take account for $CO_2$ diffusion and chemical reaction between $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CO_2$. Based on the assumption that $CO_2$ diffuses in the carbonation zone and reacts with $Ca(OH)_2$ at the outer face of carbonation zone and non-carbonation zone. In this study, a mathematical model to predict the progress of carbonation of concrete has been established based on the reducing concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$ in the carbonation progress zone, where $Ca(OH)_2$ reacts with $CO_2$ and $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ coexist. Also, the prediction model of carbonation progress rate of concrete using the air permeability coefficient regarding to $CO_2$ diffusion is developed. As a result of this study, an expression, the model equation is obtained for the prediction of carbonation based on the time and interaction velocity between $CO_2$ and Ca(OH)$_2$ dependent air permeability coefficient. The prediction by the model satisfied the experimental data of the accelerated carbonation for painted concrete. Consequently, the model can predict the rate of carbonation and the potential service life of concrete structure exposed to atmosphere.

As Construction & Demolition(C&D) debris increase every year, a system has enforced for recycled aggregate made out of C&D debris, then recycled aggregate usage increased in construction field. But as environmental problem by alkalinity of recycled aggregate occurred, the study for lowering alkalinity of recycled aggregate is needed. In this study we made alkalinity reducing facility and installed in the C&D debris midterm-treat field. Then we certified effect of lowering alkalinity and quality of recycled aggregates before and after carbonation. As a result, the most effective carbonation condition is 30seconds in carbonation time, -50~100 kPa of reaction pressure with change of 3cycles. This condition made pH 9.33~9.8 of recycled aggregate possible. The quality of recycled aggregate after carbonation was better than before carbonation in terms of plasticity index, modified CBR, abrasion loss, sand equivalent, liquid limit, size distribution, density and water absorption.

RC(Reinfored Concrete) structures exposed to carbonation in urban city have durability degradation with extended service life and cracks in concrete causes a local accelerated carbonation. In the present work, crack effect on carbonation depth is investigated and the service life of RC structure is evaluated considering cracks from early age and time-dependent cracks based on the previous field investigation. DFP(Durability Failure Probability), safety index, and the related service life are calculated considering the time to crack width reaches to maximum crack width(0.3mm). The results with time effect on crack width show lower DFP and longer service life, which seems to be reasonable compared with conservative results from crack effect from initial stage. Furthermore, crack effect is evaluated to be insignificant on DFP and service life. The technique with time-dependent crack effect on carbonation can be effectively used for RC structure containing cracking in use.

Hwangtoh is the rich resource that accounts for about 15.0% of the domestic soil, and can be used as the admixture of concrete with Pozzolan characteristics if activated by rapidly freezing after burning with high temperature. In this study, the mortar curbs containing active hwangtoh were produced, based on the mixture for the mortar curbs sold on the market. The substitution rate of active hwangtoh were considered 10.0% and 25.0%, and the test items were selected to compressive and flexural strength tests, freezing/thawing resistance tests, accelerated carbonation tests, and accelerated chloride diffusion tests. In the results of the mechanical performance, it was showed that the highest strength was evaluated in OPC mixture, and the increase in strength was small by the increase of age, which was believed to be due to the fact that most of the strength in each mixture was created in three days of steam curing. The results of the freezing/thawing tests for 28 aged days showed the reduction rate of compressive strength was 85.0% or higher for all specimen, meeting the criteria presented. The accelerated carbonation tests were carried out on the specimen at 28 days of age, and the results showed that the mortar with active hwangtoh had lower carbonation resistance performance than mortar with OPC. The passed charge of each mixture was assessed in accordance with ASTM C 1202 on 28 and 91 aged days. The OPC mixture had "Low" rate and the mortar with active hwangtoh had "Moderate" rate. So it was thought that the mortar with active hwangtoh had appropriate resistance performance for chloride attack.

The movement of deterioration agents such as a chloride ion, etc. in concrete varies with loading conditions and micro-structure developed by age effect. In this paper, the carbonation behavior by accelerated carbonation test is evaluated considering curing periods(28 days, 91 days, and 365 days) and loading conditions. Carbonation velocity coefficients are obtained referred to KS F 2584. In the control case without loading condition, carbonation velocity coefficient of 91 days decreases to 50.0 % level and that of 365 days decreases to 44.8 % level than that of 28 days curing condition. In 28 curing days, carbonation velocity coefficients changed level of 103.9 ~ 108.8 % in tensile region and 91.9~104.6 % in compressive region by loading conditions. Carbonation velocity coefficients in the 30 % and 60 % tensile loading case at 28 days decreases to 47.3 % and 52.5 % level compared to control case after 1 year. Furthermore, 45.8 % and 44.9 % level of carbonation velocity coefficients are evaluated for 30 % and 60 % compressive loading conditions compared to control case after 1 year. Carbonation velocity coefficient decreases in the 30 % compressive loading level due to effective pore compaction and it increases afterwards due to micro-cracking. In the tensile loading condition, unlike the behavior of compressive region, it linearly increases with increasing loading level.

Gamma-C2S (γ-C2S) is a substance that is difficult to react with water under normal temperature but can absorb a large amount of CO2 in the air. The addition of γ-C2S to cementitious materials through the curing of CO2 can improve the pore structure and improve the durability of the material. In this study, three kind of Ca-bearing materials : CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, were calcined 2.5h at 1450℃ to synthesize γ-C2S after mixing with SiO2 respectively. Among them, Ca(OH)2 mixed with SiO2 after calcining shows highest content. Synthesized γ-C2S was added to the cement mortar, after water curing for 1 month, accelerated carbonation test was experimented. After 28d accelerated carbonation test, pore structure will be detectived by MIP. Based on the MIP result, following the calculation method of Fractal theory, the pore structure will be quantitative described.
This study evaluated the durability of high-performance shotcrete mixed in the proper proportions using alkali-free and cement mineral accelerators as a permanent support that maintains its strength for the long term. Durability tests were performed the chloride permeability, repeated freezing and thawing, accelerated carbonation, and the effects of salt environments. Test results showed that all the shotcrete mixes included silica fume had low permeability. In addition, after 300 freeze/thaw cycles, the shotcrete mix had excellent freeze/thaw resistance more than the 85% relative dynamic modulus of elasticity. The accelerated carbonation test results were no effect of accelerator type but, the depth of carbonation was greater in the shotcrete mix containing silica fume. No damage was seen in a salt environments. Therefore, the high performance shotcrete mix proportions used in this study showed excellent durability.

This paper reports an experimental investigation conducted to evaluate the durability performance of concrete mixtures prepared utilizing blends of Type I Portland cement (OPC) and natural pozzolans (NPs) obtained from three different sources in Saudi Arabia. The control concrete mixture containing OPC alone as the binder and three concrete mixtures incorporating NPs were prepared keeping water/binder ratio of 0.4 (by weight), binder content of $370kg/m^3$, and fine/total aggregate ratio of 0.38 (by weight) invariant. The compressive strength and durability properties that included depth of water penetration, depth of carbonation, chloride diffusion coefficient, and resistance to reinforcement corrosion and sulfate attack were determined. Results of this study indicate that at all ages, the compressive strength of NP-admixed concrete mixtures was slightly less than that of the concrete containing OPC alone. However, the concrete mixtures containing NP exhibited lower depth of water penetration and chloride diffusion coefficient and more resistance to reinforcement corrosion and sulfate attack as compared to OPC. NP-admixed concrete showed relatively more depth of carbonation than OPC when subjected to accelerated carbonation. The results of this investigation indicates the viability of utilizing of Saudi natural pozzolans for improving the durability characteristics of concrete subjected to chloride and sulfate exposures.
