Investigation on Intermittent Life Testing Program for IGBT

  • The reliability issue of IGBT is a concern for researchers given the critical role the device plays in the safety of operations of the converter system. The reliability of power devices can be estimated from the intermittent life test, which aims to simulate typical applications in power electronics in an accelerated manner to obtain lifetime data. However, the test is time-consuming, as testing conditions are not well considered and only rough provisions have been made in the current standards. Acceleration of the test by changing critical test conditions is controversial due to the activation of unexpected failure mechanisms. Therefore, full investigations were conducted on critical test conditions of intermittent life test. A design optimization process for IGBT intermittent life testing program was developed to save on test times without imposing additional failure mechanisms. The applicability of the process has been supported by a number of tests and failure analysis of the test results. The process proposed in this paper can guide the test process for other power semiconductors.

  • The hydraulic servo actuator has always operated very precisely with high frequency and small displacement, and is used continuously for a long time. The hydraulic servo actuator of the test equipment used in the accelerated life test in order to guarantee the service life of the automotive parts failed earlier than the products before finishing the test. This study performed an analysis on the cause of the failure of the hydraulic servo actuator used in the test equipment, changed the design of the actuator to solve the root cause of the main failure mode, and developed the improved servo actuator. Based on above process, this study established a better performances and longer lifetime of the servo actuator after testing.

  • To enhance the reliability of distribution transformers in service and to reduce the cost of maintaining and replaceing these, the condition and life of those insulating system should be evaluated accurately and the time to replace should be determined economically. Since the transformer failures related to insulation failure indicates that the primary cause is normally mechanical failure of integrity due to loss of mechanical strength as a result of degradation, the tensile strength characteristics of paper during ageing under accelerated conditions in insulating oil and research trends for assessing the life of insulating paper were investigated.

  • This paper shows a derating design approach for LED reliability improvement. The LED is widely used in display devices or circuits. The main failure of interest is defined as 100% reduction of the light output intensity of LED resulting from corrosion due to stresses, i.e. temperature and humidity. The lifetime is varied according to the stress levels under where the LED operates so that correlation of the lifetime to these stress levels over time is modeled through accelerated life testings. A derating design approach to accomplish a required reliability level of LED is proposed to determine adequate the stress levels. In the approach, $B_{10}$ life, Failure rate, Sensitivity Analysis of LED are used as a reliability metric.

  • In this paper, we verified the failure mechanism of the discolored masking tape wrapped around the wire and studied an improved case study as well. Masking tapes are poly(Vinylchloride-co-Methyl methacrylate) (PVC) and the wire connecting with indoor/outdoor components of the air conditioner is chloroprene(CR). The masking tape under. the ultraviolet ray was accelerated to discolor fivefold. The results determined reveal the discoloration of masking tapes as an elution of the additives, dephenyl Amine series antioxidants, in the connecting wire. When changed dephenyl Amine series to phenol series, we found that the degree of discoloration was dramatically decreased. Due to stink of Thiourea and Thiuram monosulfide, as accelerators in CR wire, we controlled the vulcanization temperature and time without using these accelerators and could get the wire not to smell bad with the equal mechanical properties.

Analyzing Time in Port and Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Vessels using Duration Model (생존분석모형을 이용한 선박의 재항시간 및 온실가스 배출량 분석)

  • The time in port for vessels is one of the important factors for analyzing the operation status and the capacity of ports. In addition, the time in port for vessels can be directly used for estimating the greenhouse gas emissions resulted from vessels in port. However, it is unclear which variables can affect the time in port for vessels and what the marginal effect of each variable is. With these challenges in mind, the study analyzes the time in port for vessels arriving and departing port of Busan by using a parametric survival model. The results show that the log-logistic accelerated failure time model is appropriate to explain the time in port for 19,167 vessels arriving and departing port of Busan in 2008, in which the time in port is significantly affected by gross tonnage of vessels, service capacity of terminal, and vessel type. This study also shows that the greenhouse gas emission resulted from full-container vessels, which accounted for about 61% of all vessels with loading/unloading purpose arriving and departing port of Busan in 2008, is about "17 ton/vessel" in the boundary of port of Busan. However, the hotelling greenhouse gas emissions resulted from non-container vessels (3,774 vessels; 20%) are greater than those from the full-container vessels. Hence, it is necessary to take into account more efficient port management polices and technologies to reduce the service time of non-container vessels in port of Busan.

  • A decoy is a weapon system that can protect vessels from an enemy's torpedo. Thus, the decoy should be able to operate in the field without any failure. Because the decoy can be inoperable once its sealing is broken and water permeates inside the system, the hermetic sealing capability considering the operational environment is mandatory. To be hermetically sealed, a rubber-type O-ring is generally used in a decoy system. The sealed performance of rubber-type products, however, tends to age and deteriorate with time. Therefore, the O-ring needs to be maintained or changed periodically. This paper proposes a method to estimate the proper maintenance period using the hardness and elongation percentage, which represents the performance of the O-ring product and test data from Accelerated Life Test (ALT) of the product. The O-ring used in this paper is a NBR type, and the temperature was chosen to be the main accelerating factor as referenced in many studies. The criteria for the failure of the O-ring was set for the product to be 50% degraded compared to the initial performance. In addition, the Korean standard KS M 6518 was adopted and referenced for the preparation of test samples and the calculation of estimates. The O-ring's predicted life was simulated by analyzing the test results from a computer program, and the optimized maintenance period for the product was determined.

Evaluation of Chloride Behavior and Service Life in Long-Term Aged FA Concrete through Probabilistic Analysis (장기재령 FA 콘크리트에 대한 염화물 거동 및 확률론적 염해 내구수명 평가)

  • In this study, accelerated chloride diffusion tests were performed on OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and FA(Fly Ash) concrete considering three levels o f W/B(Water to Binder) ratio o n 1,095 curing days. The accelerated chloride diffusion coefficient and the passed charge were evaluated in accordance with Tang's method and ASTM C 1202, and the resistance performance to chloride attack improved over time. FA concrete showed excellent resistance performance against chloride penetration with help of pozzolanic reaction. As the result of the passed charge, FA concrete showed durability improvement, "low" grade to "very low" grade, but OPC concrete changed "moderate" grade to "low" grade at 1,095 curing days. After assuming the design variables used for durability design as normal distribution functions, the service life of each case was evaluated by the probabilistic analysis method based on MCS(Monte Carlo Simulation). In FA concrete, the increase of probability of durability failure was lower than that of OPC concrete with increasing time, because the time-dependent coefficient of FA concrete was up to 3.2 times higher than OPC concrete. In addition, the service life by probabilistic analysis was evaluated lower than the service life by deterministic analysis, since the target probability of durability failure was set to 10%. It is considered that more economical durability design will be possible if the mo re suitable target probability of durability failure is set for various structures through researches on actual conditions and indoor tests under various circumstances.

Life prediction of IGBT module for nuclear power plant rod position indicating and rod control system based on SDAE-LSTM

  • To reduce the losses caused by aging failure of insulation gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), which is the core components of nuclear power plant rod position indicating and rod control (RPC) system. It is necessary to conduct studies on its life prediction. The selection of IGBT failure characteristic parameters in existing research relies heavily on failure principles and expert experience. Moreover, the analysis and learning of time-domain degradation data have not been fully conducted, resulting in low prediction efficiency as the monotonicity, time correlation, and poor anti-interference ability of extracted degradation features. This paper utilizes the advantages of the stacked denoising autoencoder(SDAE) network in adaptive feature extraction and denoising capabilities to perform adaptive feature extraction on IGBT time-domain degradation data; establishes a long-short-term memory (LSTM) prediction model, and optimizes the learning rate, number of nodes in the hidden layer, and number of hidden layers using the Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm; conducts verification experiments on the IGBT accelerated aging dataset provided by NASA PCoE Research Center, and selects performance evaluation indicators to compare and analyze the prediction results of the SDAE-LSTM model, PSOLSTM model, and BP model. The results show that the SDAE-LSTM model can achieve more accurate and stable IGBT life prediction.

Tracking Characteristics of Silicone Insulators (실리콘 절연체의 트래킹 열화특성)

  • The tracking characteristics of silicon rubber degraded by accelerated outdoor exposure employing a weather-o-meter have been investigated. The tracking test was performed according to IEC Publ.587 but the concentration of conductive material was two times higher than the IEC standard in order to accelerate the tracking failure. The number of large effective scintillation and the current of high voltage circuit were measured by changing two signals as voltage signals. It was fiund that the increase of exposure time resulted in the reduction of tracking resistivity except the fact that the specimens slightly degraded within 200 hours has slightly increased the duration time.
