  • Ubiquitous computing technologies become mature enough to be applied in acceptable ubiquitous services. In particular, in u-shopping area, personalized recommender systems which automatically collect the nomadic user-related context data and then provide them with products or shops in a flexible manner. However, legacy cooperative queries and context-aware queries so far do not come up with dynamically changing situations and ambiguous query commands, respectively. Hence, The purpose of this paper is to propose a personalized context-aware cooperative query that supports a multi-level data abstraction hierarchy and conceptual distance metric among node instances, while considering the user's context data. To show the feasibility of the methodology proposed in this paper, we have implemented a prototype system, CACO, in the area of site search in a large-scale shopping mall.

  • To efficiently analyze complex and voluminous data, OLAP systems increasingly provide functionalities for visual exploration of the data allowing end-users to navigate the desired view of the data cube. This paper only deals with data cubes whose schemas represented like the exclusive symmetric hierarchy which is not addressed by current OLAP implementations. This paper presents a conceptual classification of abstraction hierarchies, and an approach to navigating data cubes with a hierarchical visualization technique. The hierarchical visualization technique is developed by using the transitive closure of a binary relation. The approach is exemplified using a real-world study from the domain of national license administration.

  • Recently the intelligent agent systems have been emerged as one of key issues for developing the defense M&S systems. However, most conventional agent architecture of M&S systems utilize the script-based models and can only deal with the individual behaviors so that they cannot suitably describe the precise tactical/strategic behavior and/or complex warfare environment. To overcome these problems, we have proposed the HEAP(Hierarchical Encapsulation and Abstraction Principle)-based hierarchical multi-agent system architecture that is able to intelligently cope with the complex missions based on the functional role of each agent on the hierarchy such as an intelligence officer, captain, commander.

  • This paper presents an application of the Ecological Interface Design (EID) theoretical framework for developing an optimal display of railway safety monitoring system (SMS) in stations. Especially, Work Domain Analysis (WDA) which is the preceding research for EID was conducted. This study proceeds as follows: First, urban railway SMS in stations was defined as a system boundary for WDA, and work environment for station personnels was analysed through Abstraction Hierarchy (AH). AH represents five levels (Functional Purpose, Values and Priority Measures, Purpose-related Functions, Object-related Process, Physical Object) of informations that station personnels obtain from work environment, and Work Domain Model (WDM) was derived as a result of the AH. To confirm how well WDM represents the real work environment of SMS, Scenario Mapping was conducted with experts who has been working as a station personnel for more than ten years. Lastly, thirteen additional information requirements that are not provided by the existing SMS as well as all the information that are provided by the existing SMS were extracted using confirmed WDM. These information requirements can be used as essential information for EID of urban railway SMS.

  • In managing organizational tacit knowledge, recent researches have shown that it is more applicable in many ways to provide expert search mechanisms in KMS to pinpoint experts in the organizations with searched expertise. In this paper, we propose an intelligent expert search framework to provide search capabilities for experts in similar or related fields according to the user′s information needs. In enabling intelligent expert searches, Fuzzy Abstraction Hierarchy (FAH) framework has been adopted, through which finding experts with similar or related expertise is possible according to the subject field hierarchy defined in the system. To improve FAH, a text categorization approach called Vector Space Model is utilized. To test applicability and practicality of the proposed framework, the prototype system, "Knowledge Portal for Researchers in Science and Technology" sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Korea, was developed.

  • In Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), tacit knowledge which is usually possessed as forms like know-how, experiences, and etc. is hard to be systemized while managing explicit knowledge is comparatively easy using information technology such as databases, Recent researches in knowledge management have shown that it is more applicable in many ways to provide expert search mechanisms in KMS to pinpoint experts in the organizations with searched expertise so that users can contact them for help, In this paper, we propose an intelligent expert search framework to provide search capabilities for experts in similar or related fields according to the user's needs. • The purpose of this study was to evaluate an effect of the new air traffic control display designed by Ecological Interface Design [EID]. The methodology of EID has not been applied to the development of the air traffic control display so far. To design a new air traffic control display by EID, We implemented Work Domain Analysis about the air traffic control domain and made the Work Domain Model that consisted of the five levels of the Abstraction Hierarchy. We extracted the Information Requirement from the completed Work Domain Model and the extracted information requirements from the model were used to design the new air traffic control display. We evaluated an effect of the new air traffic control display designed by EID. Participants for evaluating consisted of 14 active military air traffic controller of the Republic of Korea Air Force. Experiment was designed two factors within subject. Factors manipulated in the experiment included displays type to compare the existing type with the new ecological interface type and included complexity to compare the effect of the high complex situation with the effect of the low complex situation. Response time about questions with relation to air traffic collision situation, accuracy, and subjective work load were measured. The results reveled that EID type's display has a significant effect on response time, accuracy, and subjective work load and verified that EID could be applied to the air traffic control domain that is more complex and dynamic.

  • The deeper the hierarchy of a inheritance structure is, the better the reusability of the structure is, but the more difficult the understandability and the maintainability of it is. On the contrary, the shallower the hierarchy is, the worse the abstraction of the inheritance structure is, but the better the understandability and modifiability of it is. Therefore, it is to be desired that a deep hierarchy of a inheritance structure should be split to be shallow for the maintainability of a system. This paper proposed a complexity metric that is based on DIT and NOC of Chidamber and Kemerer, and solved the ambiguity of the metrics of them, which was pointed out by Li. The metric is a simple and heuristic one for measuring the complexity of class inheritance structures by considering the number of ancestor classes and descendant classes and the depth of inheritance hierarchy. This provides a quantitative information for assessing the complexity of a inheritance structure in splitting it.

  • The configuration design of a mechanical product can be efficiently performed when it is based on the functional modeling. There are methodologies, which decompose function from the abstract level to the concrete level and match the functions to physical parts. But it is difficult to carry out an innovative design when the function is matched only to a pre-detined part. This paper describes the configuration design process of a mechanical product with a design expert system, which uses function taxonomy and TRIZ theory. The expert system can propose a functional modeling of a new part. which is not in the existing parts list. The abstraction levels of design knowledge are introduced, which describe the operation of mechanical product in the levels of abstraction. This is the theoretical background of using knowledge of function and TRIZ for configuration design. The expert system is adequate to control this design knowledge. which expresses knowledge of functional modeling, mapping rules between functions and parts, selection of parts, and TRIZ theory. The hierarchy of functions and machine parts are properly expressed by classes and objects in the expert system. A design expert system has been implemented for the configuration design of a train bogie, and a new brake system of the bogie is introduced with the aid of TRIZ's 30 function groups.
