  • The protective role of Bifidobacterium spp. (B. breve K-110, B. breve K-111, and B. infantis K-525) isolated from the fecal samples of healthy Koreans was investigated on 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced aberrant crypt foci(ACF) formation in mouse colon. In mice fed normal diet with DMH treatment, an average of 68.5 ACF/colon was formed, whereas in mice administered with B. breve K-110, B. breve K-111, and B. infantis K-525, the numbers of DMH-induced ACF decreased to 7.2, 10.9, and 6.6 ACF/ colon, respectively. The mean number of crypts/focus was not significantly altered. Fecal harmful enzymes, such as β-glucuronidase, tryptophanase, and urease, were effectively inhibited during the administration of these bifidobacteria to mice. These results suggest that bifidobacteria could prevent colon cancer.

  • Emergency operation was performed in a patient with severe aortic insufficiency caused by type A acute aortic dissection with aberrant high take-off origin of single coronary artery. The single coronary artery was found to arise from an unusual position high in the ascending aorta. Dissection was begun in the aortic root and involved the single coronary ostium. Valve competance was restored by resuspension of the commissures. the false lumen was obliterated with strips of Teflon felt and surgical glue. The aortic tissues were firmly reinforced and sutured. The proximal aortic stump was anatomically reconstructed, and fortunately the aortic valve was preserved and coronary reimplantation avoided. The patient was discharged at postoperative 13 days without specific complications. Postoperative course during the 18 months follow-up was uneventful.

  • Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is rare congenital lung disease, in which systemic artery supplies a congenitally cystic portion of the lung. Patient was 19 years old male whose complaints were fever, chest pain and sputum. Chest film showed a round homogenous density and air-fluid level at the left lower lung field and on bronchogram, contrast materials did not enter the abscess pocket. By operation multiple lung abscess pockets at the lower lobe were noted. An aberrant artery, measuring 0.4cm. in diameter and 2 cm. in length, arised from the aorta just above the diaphragm and entered the pusterior basal segment of left lower lobe. After division of the artery, left lower lobectomy was done ana postoperative hospital course was uneventful. Pathologic findings were multiple lung cysts which were not connected to the left lower lobe bronchi and an aberrant artery which showed elastic lamillation and mild sclerotic change.

  • Objectives : We investigated genetic toxicity of HMCO5 in relation to chromosome aberration test on Cultured Chinese Hamster Lung (CHL) in the presence and absence of S-9 mix. Methods : Experimental groups were divided into two groups: with S-9mix (+S) or without S-9 mix (-S). -S group was also divided 2 series by treatment hours (6 hr: 6-S; or 24 hr; 24-S). Each group treated with vehicle only (complete culture medium), HMCO5 (1,250, 2,500, $5,000\;{\mu}g/ml$), and cyclophosphamide monohydrate (CPA) and ethylmethanesulfonate (EMS), respectively. Results : HMC05 did not show any aberrant metaphase. However, there were significant (p < 0.01) aberrant metaphases with CPA in S+ and with EMS in S-. Conclusions : These results indicate that HMC05 formula does not show any toxicity in chromosome aberration test.

  • The Manchester Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) is the most commonly used frameworks for investigating the relationship between self-reported driving behavior and accident involvement. After Reason et al. introduced DBQ, there were many studies replicating the research of Reason et al. in many countries. There was, however, no study replication of the Reason's research in Korea. The aim of this study is to replicate the distinction among errors, lapses and violations, and to evaluate the relationship of these behaviors with road traffic accidents on Korean drivers. 223 Korean drivers completed the Korean version of original DBQ with questions regarding background information, such as age, gender, annual mileage and accident involvement. Participants answered self-assessment questions, also. Factor analysis revealed three factors like Reason et al. The three factors were dangerous errors, violations and relatively harmless errors.

  • Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is rare congenital lung disease characterized by a cystic portion of the lung that derives its arterial blood supply though aberrant vessel directly of systemic circulation. Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is usually contained within the visceral pleura of a pulmonary lobe and its venous drainage to the pulmonary venous system. We experienced a case of pulmonary sequestration postoperatively confirmed. The patient was 48-year-old female whose complaints were cough and left chest pain. Chest film showed large homogenous opacity in left lower lung field. By operation, adult fist sized mass at the lower lobe were noted. An aberrant artery, measuring 1.0 cm. in diameter and 2.0 cm. in length, arose from the descending thoracic aorta just above the diaphragm. The anomalous systemic artery was ligatures and resection, and associated with left middle, lower bilobectomy was done. The postoperative course was uneventful, and 10 days later discharged.

  • Pulmonary sequestration is an unusual congenital malformation characterized by the presence of nonfunctioning lung tissue which usually has no communication with the normal bronchial tree and receives its blood supply from an anomalous systemic artery. We present a case of extralobar pulmonary sequestration experienced recently. The patient was 13 month old female with a complaint of fever, coughing and tachypnea. Chest film showed large homogeneous opacity in left lower lung field. At operation, a homogeneous mass was located between the left upper lobe and lower lobe, measuring 4X6X5cm in dimension. The aberrant artery was originated from the descending thoracic aorta, 1 cm in length and 3 mm in diameter. After division and ligation of the aberrant artery, sequestrectomy and lingular segmentectomy was done due to abscess formation. The postoperative course was smooth. She was discharged on postoperative thirteenth day.

  • There is epidemilogical evidence that the population with high fecal ${\beta}-glucuronidase$activity has greater risk of colon cancer than the population with low facal ${\beta}-glucuronidase$. This relationship was investigated by using the mouse-dimethylhydrazine colon carcinogenesis model and the fraction of Glucidum which is a .${\beta}-glucuronidase$inhibitor. Mice with low facal ${\beta}-glucuronidase$activity induced by consumption of the ether fraction of G lucidum had significantly fewer aberrant crypts(AC) after injections of 1, 2-dimethylhydeazine (DMH) than mice treated with DMH alone. The result supports the hypothesis that the inhibitor such as the ether fraction of G lucidum can protect an animal against the induction of colon cancer.

  • Turner syndrome, also described as 45, X, may present with most serious cardiovascular anomalies including risk of aortic dissection and rupture. In emergency situation, management for aortic dissection with complicated anatomy accompanying vascular anomaly is challenging. Here, we report a rare case of ruptured type B aortic dissection with aberrant subclavian artery and partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection in a Turner syndrome. Through right carotid-subclavian artery bypass and thoracic endovascular aortic repair, successful hybrid endovascular management correlated with a favorable result in this emergency situation.
