P파 초동주시와 표면파 분산곡선 역산을 통한 흙댐의 이상대 탐지 (Detection of anomalous features in an earthen dam using inversion of P-wave first-arrival times and surface-wave dispersion curves)

  • 대룡 흙댐익 누수경로를 포함한 이상대 탐지를 위하여, 댐 정상부의 250 m 측선을 따라 P 파와 레일리파를 기록하였다. 5 kg 해머를 이용하여 인공적으로 소규모 지진파를 발생시켰으며, 3m 간격으로 설치한 4.5 Hz 수직지오폰 24개로 탐지하였다. 이 저수지댐과 하부 기반암의 P파 속도와 S파 겉보기속도를 초동주시와 레일리파 분산곡선 역산으로 각각 구하였다. 겉보기 동포아송비가 0.46에 달하는 높은 값들이 복통이 위치한 북서쪽 끝부분의 댐 기저와 누수저지를 위해 과거 여러 차례 그라우팅 작업을 실시한 측선 남서쪽 끝 부분의 점토코아 내에서 탐지되었다. 상부 점토코아의 높은 포아송비를 갖는 이 이상대는, 조사 후 실시한 그라우팅 작업 시 그라우트 물질이 유출된 부분에 해당한다. P파 토모그래피와 레일리파 분산곡선 역산을 함께 사용하면 흙댐의 잠재적 누수경로 및 기존 그라우팅 위치를 매우 효과적으로 탐지할 수 있다.

Some Prophylactic Options to Mitigate Methane Emi ssion from Animal Agriculture in Japan

  • The abatement of methane emission from ruminants is an important global issue due to its contribution to greenhouse gas with carbon dioxide. Methane is generated in the rumen by methanogens (archaea) that utilize metabolic hydrogen ($H_2$) to reduce carbon dioxide, and is a significant electron sink in the rumen ecosystem. Therefore, the competition for hydrogen used for methanogenesis with alternative reductions of rumen microbes should be an effective option to reduce rumen methanogenesis. Some methanogens parasitically survive on the surface of ciliate protozoa, so that defaunation or decrease in protozoa number might contribute to abate methanogenesis. The most important issue for mitigation of rumen methanogenesis with manipulators is to secure safety for animals and their products and the environment. In this respect, prophylactic effects of probiotics, prebiotics and miscellaneous compounds to mitigate rumen methanogenesis have been developed instead of antibiotics, ionophores such as monensin, and lasalocid in Japan. Nitrate suppresses rumen methanogenesis by its reducing reaction in the rumen. However, excess intake of nitrate causes intoxication due to nitrite accumulation, which induces methemoglobinemia. The nitrite accumulation is attributed to a relatively higher rate of nitrate reduction to nitrite than nitrite to ammonia via nitroxyl and hydroxylamine. The in vitro and in vivo trials have been conducted to clarify the prophylactic effects of L-cysteine, some strains of lactic acid bacteria and yeast and/or ${\beta}$1-4 galactooligosaccharide on nitrate-nitrite intoxication and methanogenesis. The administration of nitrate with ${\beta}$1-4 galacto-oligosaccharide, Candida kefyr, and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis were suggested to possibly control rumen methanogenesis and prevent nitrite formation in the rumen. For prebiotics, nisin which is a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis has been demonstrated to abate rumen methanogenesis in the same manner as monensin. A protein resistant anti-microbe (PRA) has been isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum as a manipulator to mitigate rumen methanogenesis. Recently, hydrogen peroxide was identified as a part of the manipulating effect of PRA on rumen methanogenesis. The suppressing effects of secondary metabolites from plants such as saponin and tannin on rumen methanogenesis have been examined. Especially, yucca schidigera extract, sarsaponin (steroidal glycosides), can suppress rumen methanogenesis thereby improving protein utilization efficiency. The cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), or cashew shell oil, which is a natural resin found in the honeycomb structure of the cashew nutshell has been found to mitigate rumen methanogenesis. In an attempt to seek manipulators in the section on methane belching from ruminants, the arrangement of an inventory of mitigation technologies available for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) in the Kyoto mechanism has been advancing to target ruminant livestock in Asian and Pacific regions.

화학물질 배출량 변동 요인과 배출저감 정책의 조합 (Emission Factors of Chemical Substances and the Abatement Policies in Korea Industries)

  • 본 연구는 한국의 환경투입산출모형을 이용하여 유독물질 및 발암물질의 산업별 배출강도와 배출량 변동에 대한 경제적 요인을 분석하고, 배출 감축을 위한 정책조합을 제시한 것이다. 분석에 이용된 자료는 2000년~2007년의 산업별 화학물질 배출량과 산업연관표 자료이다. 분석결과, 동기간 중 발암물질의 배출은 감소하였으나, 유독물질의 배출은 증가하고 있다. 유독물질의 총배출 강도가 높은 산업은 출판인쇄 및 복제(12), 기타운송장비(26), 펄프종이 및 종이제품(11), 가죽가방 및 신발(9), 섬유직물(7) 등이며, 발암물질의 TEI가 높은 산업은 목재 및 나무제품(10), 자동차 및 트레일러(25), 고무 및 플라스틱제품(15), 영상음향 및 통신장비(23) 등이다. 유독물질과 발암물질의 변동에 크게 기여한 경제적 요인은 생산 과정에서의 배출계수 관리와 수요면의 최종수요 요인으로 나타났다. 배출량을 효율적으로 감축하기 위한 정책 수단의 조합은 물질군별로 산업부문별로 상이하게 나타난다. 섬유직물(7), 컴퓨터 및 사무용기기(21), 운송장비(26) 등은 배출계수를 관리하는 것이 효율적이며, 조립금속제품(18)은 최종수요를 관리하는 것이 효율적이다. 배출계수 관리가 이루어지고 있는 가구 및 기타제조업(27), 고무 및 플라스틱(15)은 최종수요 관리가 적극 추진되어야 하며, 자동차(25), 코크스석유정제(13), 1차금속(17), 화학(14)은 배출계수 관리와 보조적인 최종수요 관리가 요구되는 부문이다. 이러한 정책 조합은 인체유해 화학물질 감축을 위한 환경정책의 수단에서 산업부문별 물질군별 우선순위를 결정하는 근거가 될 수 있다.

Interest Rate Caps in Microfinance: Issues and Challenges

  • Purpose - To control exorbitant interest rates, implementation of an interest rate ceiling is a standard practice in microfinance. However, there are pros and cons of such market intervention. Hence, the aim of this short note is to highlight issues and challenges regarding the interest rate cap in microfinance, both from the perspective of clients and institutions. Research design, data, and methodology - While the nature of this short note is explanatory and descriptive, the research methodology used relevant data from the MixMarket and Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) annual reports in Bangladesh. Results - We argue that an interest rate ceiling is detrimental both for the clients and microfinance institutions (MFIs). This market intervention substantially reduces the outreach of MFIs and clients are most likely to pay a higher price in the long-run. Additionally, an interest rate cap also puts severe pressure on new-born and high-cost MFIs to cope with the interest rate ceiling. Conclusions - Although market intervention may be necessary in the short-run, it should not be the ultimate solution to abate high interest in microfinance. Understanding the operational dynamics of MFIs, as well as promoting productivity, efficiency and competition could help to lower the interest rates.

  • Assembly scheduling in shipbuilding is responsible for determine assembly process orders and departmental production schedule for the block, the basic composite unit of ships. It is necessary much more information to decide production scheduling as the characteristic of shipbuilding which has been more complex and more various and also, a lot of waste of time and of human power is generated in the course of data processing. The target shipbuilding manufacturer of this study use empirical techniques, based on the user's discretion, to compile and to apply data which are scattered in DB storages separately. Because of that reason, the user should not only be performed identification and screening operations but also modification and verification for vast amounts of data, so it is hard to keep the consistency of the data and also the operation time is not constant. Accordingly, the object in this study is by presenting an efficient DB framework to reduce wasting time and man-hour at experienced-oriented process, abate user's manual operations and support an efficient scheduling in assembly processes.

Heat-induced coarsening of layer-by-layer assembled mixed Au and Pd nanoparticles

  • This article shows the coarsening behavior of nanoparticle multilayers during heat treatments which produce larger metallic nanostructures with varying shapes and sizes on glass slides. Nanoparticle multilayer films are initially constructed via the layer-by-layer self-assembly of small and monodispersed gold and/or palladium nanoparticles with different compositions (gold only, palladium only, or both gold and palladium) and assembly orders (compounding layers of gold layers over palladium layers or vice versa). Upon heating the slides at $600^{\circ}C$, the surface nanoparticles undergo coalescence becoming larger nanostructured metallic films. UV-Vis results show a clear reliance of the layering sequence on the optical properties of these metal films, which demonstrates an importance of the outmost (top) layers in each nanoparticle multilayer films. Topographic surface features show that the heat treatments of nanoparticle multilayer films result in the nucleation of nanoparticles and the formation of metallic cluster structures. The results confirm that different composition and layering sequence of nanoparticle multilayer films clearly affect the coalescence behavior of nanoparticles during heat treatments.

성인의 폭음 관련요인: 성별, 연령별 차이 (Risk Factors for Heavy Episodic Drinking among Korean Adults: Differences by Gender and Age)

  • Purpose: Most research on risky drinking among adults in Korea has focused on problem drinking and high-risk drinking. This paper examines the nature of heavy episodic drinking_(HED) among adults and seeks to identify the risk factors for HED by analyzing differences by gender and age. Method: Participants were 3,886 adults aged 19-64 years from the database of the fifth Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (KNHANES-V, 2010). Data were analyzed by conducting the Rao_Scott chi-square test, an ANCOVA, and logistic analysis with SAS 9.2. Results: Individuals between 19 and 29 years of age had the highest HED among all age groups. Individuals between 40 and 49 (male adults) and those between 30 and 39 (female adults) showed HED associated with stress, suicidal ideation, smoking, and other health behavior-related variables. Risk factors that affected HED in male adults were age, educational status, and current smoking, while for female adults, the factors were age, educational status, employment, marital status, and current smoking. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop appropriate intervention programs that abate negative emotions and lessen the risk of HED in adults with consideration to gender and age differences.

Factors for Suicidal Ideation in Middle School Students by Gender

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors of suicidal ideation in middle school students by gender, and to announce the necessity of gaining upon a socio-cultural comprehension-based approach. Methods: Three middle schools were randomly selected from a pool of 21 middle schools in S City, and were stratified by school and grade. A total of 878 students were included in the analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors that affect suicidal ideation by gender. Results: Suicidal ideation and depression scores of the female students were over twofold higher than those of the male students. The factor that was found to affect suicidal ideation in the male students was depression while for the female students the factors were visiting suicide-related websites, having friends who attempted to commit suicide, depression, and poor communication with one's parents. Conclusion: The findings in this study support gender differences in suicidal ideation, and suggest that building socio-cultural environments are needed to abate their negative emotions and to help youth find out their reasons to live.

과거 30년 우리나라 광화학 오염과 연구 현황 (Photochemical Air Pollution of Seoul in the Last Three Decades)

  • In Korea, photochemical air pollution has drawn public attention as one of the major environmental issues since 1990s. To abate ozone and air pollution, new legislation was enacted and regulation was reinforced in conjunction with basic researches. As a result, the air quality has been much improved in terms of primary pollutant such as CO and the occurrence of extremely high ozone concentration. In Seoul, on the other hand, concentrations of ozone and exeedance hours of its national standard have increased since 2005, which is intimately coupled with $NO_2$ variations. It indicates the need for further research at long-term bases to improve our understanding on complex processes determining ozone concentrations. In this paper, the characteristics of ozone variation was analyzed with 13-year measurement data obtained in Seoul. In addition, the previous studies and their main results were summarized that have been performed in association with photochemical air pollution in Korea over the last three decades.

소음에 대한 특수건강진단 및 작업환경측정 결과 분석 (Analysis of Noise Special Medical Examination and Work Environment Monitoring results)

  • According to the analysis of special medical examination and work environment monitoring data, the rate of C1 and D1 on noise hazard exceeded 90% among those of total hazardous factors. The rate of company exceeding noise exposure limit was also more than 90%. The analysis result shows that main ages diagnosed with C1 and D1 was age of 50s. The majority scale company having workers diagnosed with C1 and D1 was the companies employing 5~49 workers. Types of industries which have a large number of companies exceeding noise exposure limit were automobile and trailer manufacturing, metal processing industry and primary metal manufacturing. A large number of work processes exceeding noise exposure limit were forming and processing work, cutting and bending work and grinding. To reduce the number of company exceeding noise exposure limit, the reduction counterplan should be focused on the type of industry and the work process which exceeded noise exposure limit frequently. However, the reduction counterplan is preemptively necessary to the type of industry and the work process which exceeded noise exposure limit consecutively if the purpose of reduction counterplan is not to merely reduce the number of company exceeding noise exposure limit but to abate workers' suffering from noise.
