  • In this paper, the SNR estimation error of Decision Directed SNR estimation method in AWGN is investigated, which uses samples received in reference decision region. In communication system receiver, when SNR estimation scheme using error vectors between ideal sample points and received sample points of reference region is adopted, the samples contain incorrectly received samples due to AWGN. Consequently, the mean of estimated reference constellation point is shifted and Decision Directed SNR estimation is inaccurately performed. These effects are explained by modified probability density function and difference between actual SNR and estimated SNR is theoretically derived and quantatively analyzed. It is proved that SNR estimation error obtained through computer simulation is matched up with derived one, and SNR estimation performance is enhanced significantly by adopting suggested correction scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a receiver that combines a channel detector with a channel decoder to retrieve information from ISI and AWGN in an iteratively manner. The receiver, evolving from a system of a PRML detector and a RS decoder, consists of a SOVA detector followed by a LDPC decoder and has them exchange information iteratively. Rather than handling extrinsic reliabilities explicitly as in Turbo equalization, we take hard-decision values from the LDPC decoder and mix them with the channel output in a certain ratio as input for SOVA. The scheme, simply modified to the one-way structure of a SOVA and a LDPC decoder, shows improved performance with iteration numbers as well as the combining ratio of the channel output and the feedback output. We additionally analyze the receiver with a simple theoretical model and present some valuable properties.

  • In this paper, we propose a new signal frame structure based on Alamouti code that can maintain the same performance as Alamouti code and increase spectral efficiency. The proposed signal frame structure can increase spectrum efficiency to approach 1(bit/s/Hz) since it can process n bit data during (n+1) time slot. In order to verify two performances, we derive closed form BER via mathematical approach, and compare with the simulation result in Rayleigh fading plus AWGN channel. Then we find that the two performances are exactly same.

  • Recently, with the increase in use of digital equipment in various fields, the importance of image and signal processing is increasing. However, many types of noise are generated during transmission and reception of digital signal, causing errors. For this reason, noise removal is mandatorily performed during pre-processing phase in many fields. In the present paper, noise is classified through noise evaluation, and noise removal is performed to remove impulse noise and noise with AWGN-added noise. And, proposed is an algorithm which utilizes modified Gaussian filter and directional effective pixels according to noise type. Simulation results show superior noise-removal characteristics, and for objective evaluation, compared with conventional methods.

  • Broadcast nature of wireless medium and path-loss reduction create a favourable condition for collaborative communications (CC) among single-antenna users to gain the powerful benefits of multi-antenna system without the demand for physical arrays. This paper proposes a CC strategy adapting to the propagation environment changes by optimizing the transmit signal amplification factors to simplify the structure of maximum likelihood (ML) detector and to obtain the minimum error probability as well. The closed-form BER expression was also derived and compared to the simulation results to evaluate the performance of the suggested solution. A variety of numerical results revealed the cooperation significantly outperforms non-cooperative counterpart under flat Rayleigh fading channel plus AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise).

  • In this paper, simulations are performed using standards proposed by 3GPP and 3GPP2. From the view point of performance analysis based on Turbo code specification, performance of Turbo code in AWGN, proposed by 3GPP, is compared. To make comparison, experimental result of Turbo code that is performed on one of the many block sizes proposed by 3GPP2 in Rayleigh fading channel, is provided. Performance of Turbo decoders using Max_Log MAP and Log MAP are compared.

  • In regions of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), performance analysis uses simulations of hybrid concatenated coding systems. However, for higher SNR regions beyond simulation capabilities, average upper bounds to bit error rate (BER) and word error rate (WER) are used. In [1], all weight enumerating functions are needed to obtain average bounds. In this paper, we use RSC as constituent codes, by using effective free distances instead of WEF, we derive average BER and WER bounds of hybrid concatenated convolutional codes (HCCC) and analyze the BER and WER over AWGN and Rayleigh/Rician fading channels.

  • Recently, as the frequency of use of video media increases in various fields, the importance of signal processing is increasing. However, many kinds of noise are generated in the transmission and reception process and affect the information of the signal. For this reason, the noise removal is essential as a preprocessing process. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to remove mixed noise of impulse noise and AWGN. The proposed algorithm restores the image through noise determination and pixel change for efficient noise removal. Unlike the conventional method, noise is removed by minimizing both noise effects. Simulation showed excellent noise removal characteristic results were compared and analyzed using the PSNR for such decisions.

  • Edge in images appears when a great difference shows up in light and shade between pixels and includes data of the subject's size, location direction and etc. The edge is generally detected by the methods such as Sobel, Roberts, Laplacian, LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) and etc. However, in AWGN(additive white Gaussian noise) added images, quality of the edge becomes slightly uncertain. Therefore, this paper proposed edge detection algorithm using modified mask of weighting to improve the quality of the existing methods. And in order to verify the performance efficiency of the proposed method, processed image and PFOM(Pratt's figure of merit) has been used as valuation standard for a comparison with the existing methods.

  • Degradation is generated by several causes in the process of digitalization or transmission of data. And its essential cause is noise. Therefore, researches for wavelet-based methods which reconstruct signal degraded by noise have continued. In AWGN(addtive white gaussian noise) environment, the general trend for denoising is to use the thresholding method. Reconstructed signal includes a lot of noise because these methods only consider statistical characteristic regarding noise. In this paper, we present a new method which uses the cumulation of wavelet detail coefficients. As a result, reconstruction of edges and denoising performance are improved. Also we compare existing methods using SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) as the standard of judgement of improvemental effect.
