A Study of PSs Modeling of Ulchin N/P #1 by AVR Step Test (AVR 스템시험에 의한 울진 N/P 1호기 PSS 모델링 연구)

  • This paper deals with the PSS modeling of Ulchin N/P #1 as well as the generator and excitation system modeling by utilizing the recorded data from AVR step test, which has been performed by entering small voltage signal into the AVR summing point. In addition to it. two recorded results obtained from the AVR step test with PSS sunning and without PSS running have not only been compared each other on the time domain, but also they heve been analyzed with FFT analysis on the frequency domain; thus, the desirable effects of running PSS in Ulchin N/P #1 on power system have been explicitly confirmed. Finally, the derived PSS model parameters lead to good matches between simulation results and recorded data.

  • A simulation procedure was developed for identifying Yungnam unit 2 excitation model parameters to improve the accuracy of stability simulation of KEPCO. First, generator model parameters are derived by using modified load rejection technique from measured load rejection test. For identifying excitation model parameters, switch was changed from MVR mode to AVR mode in Yungnam unit 2 excitation system instead of applying to a small step to the voltage reference($V_{ref}$) because of saving time and efforts, assuming the test result would show coincided result with applying to a small step to the $V_{ref}$. However, it was found that the response of switching from MVR to AVR is greatly different from it of applying small signal to the $V_{ref}$. A simulation procedure was needed to take into accounts of real AVR component status before and after switching from MVR to AVR. This paper reports the procedure which duplicated the measured response and addresses the merits of this test on conventional AVR step test.

  • This paper describes the guideline of design and tuning of practical Micro 5KVA machine's digital AVR/PSS control parameters by using the computer models and testing on-line AVR step test of laboratory simulator under the no-load or load conditions. The suggested procedures can be also applied to the large scaled machine's AVR/PSS control parameter tuning in KEPCO system.

  • This paper deals with the PSS modelling of Ulchin N/P Unit #1 by utilizing the recorded data from AVR step test. In addition to it, the recorded results obtained from the AVR step test with PSS running and without PSS running are not only compared each other on the time domain but they are also analyzed with FFT on the frequency domain; the desirable effect of running PSS in Ulchin N/P Unit #1 is examined.   • This paper proposes a hybrid approach involving Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Bacterial Foraging (BF) for tuning the PID controller of an AVR. Recently the social foraging behavior of E. coli bacteria has been used to solve optimization problems. We first illustrate the proposed method using four test functions and the performance of the algorithm is studied with an emphasis on mutation, crossover, variation of step sizes, chemotactic steps, and the life time of the bacteria. Further, the proposed algorithm is used for tuning the PID controller of an AVR. Simulation results are very encouraging and this approach provides us a novel hybrid model based on foraging behavior with a possible new connection between evolutionary forces in social foraging and distributed non-gradient optimization algorithm design for global optimization over noisy surfaces.

  • An embedded two-axis solar tracking system was developed by using AVR micro controller for enhancing solar energy utilization. The system consists of an Atmega128 micro controller, two step motors, two step drive modules, CdS sensors, GPS module and other accessories needed for functional stability. This system is controlled by both an astronomical method and an optical method. Initial operation is performed by the result from the astronomical method, which is followed by the fine controlled operation using the signals from Cds sensors. The GPS sensor generates UTC, longitude and latitude data where the solar tracker is installed. A database of solar altitude, azimuth, and sunrise and sunset times is provided by UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter).

  • The proportional-integral-derivative(PID) controller has been widely used in the industry because of its robust performance and simple structure in a wide range of operating conditions. However, the AVR(Automatic Voltage Regulator) as a control system is not robust to variations of the power system parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to use PID controller to increase the stability and performance of the AVR system. In this paper, a novel design method for determining the optimal PID controller parameters of an AVR system using the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm is presented. The proposed approach has superior features, including easy implementation, stable convergence characteristic and good computational efficiency. In order to assist estimating the performance of the proposed PSO-PID controller, a new performance criterion function is also defined. This evaluation function is intended to reflect when the maximum percentage overshoot, the settling time are given as design specifications. The ITAE evaluation function should impose a penalty if the design specifications are violated, so that the PSO algorithm satisfies the specifications when searching for the PID controller parameter. Finally, through the computer simulations, the proposed PSO-PID controller not only satisfies the given design specifications for the terminal voltage step response, but also shows better control performance than other similar recent studies.

  • This paper describes an AC voltage regulator using AC chopper and auxiliary transformer which is series connected with main input. It has many advantages such as fast voltage control, high efficiency and low THD. A detail study of step down AC voltage regulator is described and two kinds of novel step-up/down voltage regulator for AVR application are proposed. The operation principle and PWM method of the proposed regulator are described. Experimental results show that it can be used as AC voltage regulator for special purpose very efficiently.

  • This paper describes the practical tuning method of dual-input PSS and its application to Muju P/P #2 with Proto PSS, which is based on DSP technology and uses both frequency and power. First, the model parameters of generator system used in this paper have been derived from the generator characteristic testing. Then, in the selection of PSS parameters, the Bode plot is plotted in order to tune the PSS's time constants which are able to compensate the phase lagging due to generator and excitation system. In addition, the eigenvalue analysis is also performed for determining a reliable PSS gain, $K_{s}$. Finally, the transient stability program has been utilized to verify the safe operation of Proto PSS against the predictable disturbances such as the AVR-step test and generator unloading test. In on-site test, the simulated results have been identically duplicated by implementing AVR step test in Muju P/P #2 with Proto PSS, which has the previously designed PSS parameters.s.

  • The gas-turbine generator of Seo-Incheon combined-cycle plant was tested for derivation of a model for dynamic analysis. Load rejection and AVR step test was performed to get the dynamic response of generator. The parameters of generator/control system model were determined by these measured data. No-load saturation test was performed for the saturation characteristics of the generator under steady state. V-curve test was also performed so as to find exact generator parameters. Q-axis parameters of generator was derived by measuring power angle. AVR and governor constants have been tuned by their oscillatory period and setting time characteristics. The derived parameters of generator control system is verified by one-machine infinite bus system simulation. (author). 7 refs., 20 figs., 5 tabs.
