To examine the cholesterol-towering effects of extruded products made with cassava starch (CS) and blends of cassava starch with either resistant starch (CS-RS) or oat fiber (CS-OF) hamsters were fed with diets containing a high-cholesterol (2%) and high-fat (17%) diet for 20 days. Hamsters fed with a diet containing no cholesterol were used as a control. Total cholesterol (TC) levels in the CS-RS and CS-OF groups were significantly (p>0.05) lower compared to the CS group by 11.5% and 8.5%, respectively. Also, the diets containing fibers decreased the value of low-density lipoproteins plus very low-density lipoproteins fraction by 32.4% (CS-RS diet) and 51.7% (CS-OF), respectively, as compared to the CS diet. Total lipid values were significantly (p<0.05) lower in hamsters fed the CS-RS diet (916 mg/dL) and CS-OF diet (964 mg/dL) as compared to those fed the CS diet (1661 mg/dL). The results obtained in this study suggest that extruded products containing cassava starch blended with either resistant starch or oat fleer, could prevent health problems associated with high levels of cholesterol and hypertriglyceridemia induced by a high cholesterol and fat diet.
We developed a CASE-II water model that will enable the simulation of remote sensing reflectance($R_{rs}$) at the coastal waters for the retrieval of suspended sediments (SS) concentrations from satellite imagery. The model has six components which are: water, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter (DOM), non-chlorophyllous particles (NC), heterotrophic microorganisms and an unknown component, possibly represented by bubbles or other particulates unrelated to the five first components. We measured $R_{rs}$, concentration of SS and chlorophyll, and absorption of DOM during our field campaigns in Korea. In addition, we generated $R_{rs}$ from different concentrations of SS and chlorophyll, and various absorptions of DOM by random number functions to create a large database to test the model. We assimilated both the computer generated parameters as well as the in-situ measurements in order to reconstruct the reflectance spectra. We validated the model by comparing model-reconstructed spectra with observed spectra. The estimated $R_{rs}$ spectra were used to (1) evaluate the performance of four wavelengths and wavelengths ratios for accurate retrieval of SS. 2) identify the optimum band for SS retrieval, and 3) assess the influence of the SS on the chlorophyll algorithm. The results indicate that single bands at longer wavelengths in visible better results than commonly used channel ratios. The wavelength of 625nm is suggested as a new and optimal wavelength for SS retrieval. Because this wavelength is not available from SeaWiFS, 555nm is offered as an alternative. The presence of SS in coastal areas can lead to overestimation chlorophyll concentrations greater than 20-500%.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the adherence of bacteria on various denture base resin materials and effects of chitosan, added to denture base materials on bacterial adherence. PMMA denture base resin such as heat-cured Vertex-RS, self-cured Vertex-SC and 4-META denture base resin such as heat-cured Meta-Dent, self-cured Meta-Fast were used in this study Samples were divided into two groups the denture base resin with chitosan, without chitosan Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei were used in this study. The surface of samples was observed by SEM. When chitosan was added to M17 and MRS broth, viable cell count of bacteria was reduced. Viable cell count of Streptococcus mutans on the samples decreased as follows : Meta-Dent, Vertex-SC, Meta-Fast, Vertex-RS. Viable cell count of Lactobacillus casei on the samples decreased as follows: Vertex-RS, Meta-Dent, Meta-Fast, Vertex-SC. The resin with chitosan showed lower adherence of bacteria than without chitosan. The images of SEM showed that the surface of the resin with chitosan was rougher than that of without chitosan. These results showed that the denture base resin materials with chitosan have rougher surface than without chitosan, but less bacteria adhered on them.
Fifteen Karan-Swiss male calves of 9-12 months of age were divided into three groups of five each in a randomised block design. Animals in group I were fed wheat straw ad lib. and concentrate mixture according to their requirements, while in group II and III the animals were fed with 1/3 of the required concentrate mixture replaced by UMM licks 'Ex' and 'F', respectively. The DMI (kg/day as well as per 100 kg b.wt.) were similar (p > 0.05) among different groups of animals, however, the digestibility of DM as well as OM enhanced from $52.85{\pm}1.48$ to $58.36{\pm}1.89$ and $55.33{\pm}1.48$ to $60.12{\pm}1.75$, respectively. Growth rates of the calves were $533.8{\pm}27.25$, $532.3{\pm}42.24$ and $538.4{\pm}18.68$ g/d in groups I, II and ill (p > 0.05), respectively. Body composition and N balances of the animals were not affected by supplementation of UMM licks, however, protein retention efficiency was higher in group III ($82.57{\pm}2.54$) though nonsignificant. Feed cost/day was reduced from Rs. 7.92 (group I) to Rs. 4.62 (group II) and Rs. 3.44 (group III). Hence, partial replacement of concentrates by UMM licks reduced the cost of feeding of growing calves by 41.7 to 56.6% without affecting the growth performance.
CCITT G.721, G.723 standard ADPCM algorithm is implemented by using TI's fixed point DSP start kit (DSK). ADPCM can be implemented on a various rates, such as 16K, 24K, 32K and 40K. The ADPCM is sample based compression technique and its complexity is not so high as the other speech compression techniques such as CELP, VSELP and GSM, etc. ADPCM is widely applicable to most of the low cost speech compression application and they are tapeless answering machine, simultaneous voice and fax modem, digital phone, etc. TMS320C50 DSP is a low cost fixed point DSP chip and C50 DSK system has an AIC (analog interface chip) which operates as a single chip A/D and D/A converter with 14 bit resolution, C50 DSP chip with on-chip memory of 10K and RS232C interface module. ADPCM C code is compiled by TI C50 C-compiler and implemented on the DSK on-chip memory. Speech signal input is converted into 14 bit linear PCM data and encoded into ADPCM data and the data is sent to PC through RS232C. The ADPCM data on PC is received by the DSK through RS232C and then decoded to generate the 14 bit linear PCM data and converted into the speech signal. The DSK system has audio in/out jack and we can input and out the speech signal.
The captopril microcapsules were prepared and were investigated by measuring their size distribution using Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and dissolution of captopril. Cetyl alcohol microcapsules prepared by emulsion melted-cooled method with various ratios of drug to cetyl alcohol were spherical and uniform. The release rate of cetyl alcohol microcapsules was decreased proportionally as the content of cetyl alcohol increased but, the particle size of microcapsules was increased. The surface of cetyl alcohol microcapsules was comparatively rough as drug content increased. Pellet type microcapsules were prepared using fluidized-bed coating system by spraying captopril solution on nonpareil-seeds followed by applying $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS solution containing propylene glycol as a plasticizer. The release rate of drug from pellet type microcapsules decreased as the content of $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS increased.

Our previous study for developing seeds of Iksan 526 (I.526), an inbred line of resveratrol-producing transgenic rice line, showed that, in 20 days after heading (DAH) seeds, resveratrol was almost saturated and accumulation of piceid was highest though the expression of Arachis hypogaea resveratrol synthase 3 (AhRS3, GenBank DQ124938) was highest in 31 DAH seeds. In this study, it was investigated how the overexpression of AhRS3 affects phenylpropanoid pathway genes. p-Coumaroyl-CoA is derived from phenylpropanoid pathway and used as a substrate of AhRS3 reaction for resveratrol production. In 6, 13, 20, 31 and 41 (45 for Dongjin) DAH seeds of I526 and Dongjin, a wild type of I.526, respectively, the expression pattern of phenylpropanoid pathway genes, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL: LOC_Os02g41630.2, LOC_Os04g43760.1), cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H: LOC_Os05g25640.1), 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL: LOC_Os02g08100.1), cinnamoyl-CoA reductase (CCR: LOC_ Os09g25150.1, LOC_Os08g34280.1), hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA shikimate/quinate hydroxycinnamoyl transferase (HCT: LOC_Os04g42250.2, LOC_Os02g39850.1) and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD: LOC_Os02g09490.1), was examined using real time (RT)-PCR. Compared to developing seeds of Dongjin, RT-PCR results showed that the expression pattern of phenylpropanoid pathway genes was modified in developing seeds of I.526. In most genes, except for CAD, of I.526 developing seeds, the gene expression was highest in 20 DAH corresponding to biosynthesis of resveratrol and piceid, i.e. the expression of phenylpropanoid pathway genes was gradually increased by 20 DAH and decreased as seeds develop. Especially, in Dongjin, the highest expression of PALs and 4CL was in 6 DAH and their expression was gradually decreased as seeds develop. These genes expression data also exhibited that, in developing seeds of I.526, phenylpropanoid pathway genes were slightly or significantly (in some genes) upregulated compared to Dongjin. Therefore, the overexpression of AhRS3 changed the expression pattern of phenylpropanoid pathway genes in I.526 developing seeds and this modification for gene expression is closely related to biosynthesis of resveratrol and piceid.
