The Proposal Method of ARINC-429 Linkage for Efficient Operation of Tactical Stations in P-3C Maritime Patrol Aircraft (P-3C 해상초계기용 전술컴퓨터의 효율적 운영을 위한 ARINC-429 연동 방법)

  • The P-3C maritime patrol aircraft operated by the Republic of Korea Navy is equipped with various sensor devices (LRUs, line replace units) for tactical data collection. Depending on the characteristics of the sensor device, it operates with various communication protocols such as IEEE 802.3, MIL-STD-1553A/B, and ARINC-429. In addition, the collected tactical data is processed in the tactical station for mission operators, and this tactical station constitutes a clustering network on Gigabit Ethernet and operates in a distributed processing method. For communication with the sensor device, a specific tactical station mounts a peripheral device (eg. ARINC-429 interface card). The problem is that the performance of the entire distributed processing according to the peripheral device control and communication relay of this specific device is degraded, and even the operation stop of the tactical station has a problem of disconnecting the communication with the related sensor device. In this paper, we propose a method to mount a separate gateway to solve this problem, and the validity of the proposed application is demonstrated through the operation result of this gateway.

A new DPCM-based transmission scheme for flight data (차분펄스부호변조방식에 기반한 새로운 비행데이터 전송 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a new DPCM-based transmission scheme for flight data. The amount of the flight data from LRU to MC has been increased due to the emergence and development of avionics systems and functions. It becomes a serious issue for satisfying the hard real-time processing required in the MC. In order to solve this problem, we observed the flight data produced by X-Plane simulator and discovered that the most flight data are moderately varied during flight. Based on this fact, a new data format is suggested by modifying that of ARINC-429 protocol in this paper. And the different value of the flight data is transmitted in the proposed scheme. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves 20% data transfer gain compared to the ARINC-429 based transmission method.

  • The tool for developing airborne software requires the same level of safety as airborne software because the tool whose output is part of the airborne software and thus could insert an error into the airborne software. This paper describes how to ensure the reliability of the tool output that becomes a part of the airborne software by validating of the input and output files of the tool when generating the ARINC 661 standard UA definition file and the CDS configuration file through the A661UAGEN tool of Hanwha Systems. We present the method to validate XML data structure and contents with an XML schema definition, which is an input of the A661UAGEN tool. And the method to validate the output binary data by using mask data for the corresponding data structure and valid value, which is the output of the A661UAGEN tool, was presented. As such, validation of the input and output of the tool improves the reliability of binary DFs and CDs integrated into the airborne software, allowing airborne software developers to utilize the tool to ensure safety in developing the OFP.

  • This paper presents an implementation of a new type of architecture to improve an overflow problem on the network buffer. Each receiver channel of network system stores the message in its own buffer. If some receiver channel receives many messages, buffer overflow problem may occur for the channel. This paper proposes a network controller that implements a receiver channel with shared-memory to save all of the received messages from the every incomming channels. The proposed architecture is applied to ARINC-429, a real-time control network for commercial avionics system. For verifying performance of the architecture, ARINC-429 controller is designed using a SOPC platform, designed by Verilog and targeted to Xilinx Virtex-4 with a built-in PPC405 core.

  • Avionics system are composed of multiple electronic device that performs important missions the number of electronic devices for the performance of aircraft has been gradually increasing. As a result, cost of development, maintenance and operating have increased. To solve this problem, technology paradigm of avionics has been shifting from federated avionics systems that manage to each system independently to IMA(Integrated Modular Avionics) systems. Unlike federated systems, fault tolerance becomes an essential technology in IMA systems. Because each aircraft features integrated in the an IMA system, a fault can jeopardize the entire system. In this paper, we define faults which can occur on the ARINC 653 based IMA system first, and design the ARINC 653 compliant HM(health Monitoring) system for the system can continue to operate be normal when occur a fault.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient transmission scheme for flight data. It is important to reduce amount of flight data transmitted effectively for timely transmission in airplane that the safety is very importantly recognized. Thus, this paper shows the improved technique transmitting after compressing flight data by the lossless compression technique. Because the proposed method improves the transmission speed of the flight data effectively. The processing of flight data and handling can be easily performed in the time to be restricted. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves 25% data transfer gain compared to the ARINC 429 based transmission method.

  • The current-generation avionics systems are based on a federated architecture, where an electronic device runs a single software module or application that collaborates with other devices through a network. This architecture makes the internal system architecture very complicate, and gives rise to issues of Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP). In this paper, we show that the partitioning defined by ARINC 653 can efficiently deal with the SWaP issues on small unmanned aerial vehicles, where the SWaP issues are extremely severe. We especially install the integrated mission system on real hexacopter and quadcopter and perform successful flight tests. The presented software technology for integrated mission system and software consolidation methodology can provide a valuable reference for other SWaP sensitive real-time systems.
