UC Model with ARIMA Trend and Forecasting U.S. GDP (ARIMA 추세의 비관측요인 모형과 미국 GDP에 대한 예측력)

  • In a typical trend-cycle decomposition of GDP, the trend component is usually assumed to follow a random walk process. This paper considers an ARIMA trend and assesses the validity of the ARIMA trend model. I construct univariate and bivariate unobserved-components(UC) models, allowing the ARIMA trend. Estimation results using U.S. data are favorable to the ARIMA trend models. I, also, compare the forecasting performance of the UC models. Dynamic pseudo-out-of-sample forecasting exercises are implemented with recursive estimations. I find that the bivariate model outperforms the univariate model, the smoothed estimates of trend and cycle components deliver smaller forecasting errors compared to the filtered estimates, and, most importantly, allowing for the ARIMA trend can lead to statistically significant gains in forecast accuracy, providing support for the ARIMA trend model. It is worthy of notice that trend shocks play the main source of the output fluctuation if the ARIMA trend is allowed in the UC model.

  • Software failure time presented in the literature exhibit either constant, monotonic increasing or monotonic decreasing. For data analysis of software reliability model, data scale tools of trend analysis are developed. The methods of trend analysis are arithmetic mean test and Laplace trend test. Trend analysis only offer information of outline content. In this paper, we discuss forecasting failure time case of failure time censoring. The used software failure time data for forecasting failure time is random number of Weibull distribution(shaper parameter 1, scale parameter 0.5), Using this data, we are proposed to ARIMA(AR(1)) and simulation method for forecasting failure time. The practical ARIMA method is presented.

Forecasting the Container Throughput of the Busan Port using a Seasonal Multiplicative ARIMA Model (승법계절 ARIMA 모형에 의한 부산항 컨테이너 물동량 추정과 예측)

  • This paper estimates and forecasts the container throughput of Busan port using the monthly data for years 1992-2011. To do this, this paper uses the several seasonal multiplicative ARIMA models. Among several ARIMA models, the seasonal multiplicative ARIMA model $(1,0,1){\times}(1,0,1)_{12}$ is selected as the best model by AIC, SC and Hannan-Quin information criteria. According to the forecasting values of the selected seasonal multiplicative ARIMA model $(1,0,1){\times}(1,0,1)_{12}$, the container throughput of Busan port for 2013-2020 will increase steadily annually, but there will be some volatile variations monthly due to the seasonality and other factors. Thus, to forecast the future container throughput of Busan port and to develop the Busan port efficiently, we need to use and analyze the seasonal multiplicative ARIMA model $(1,0,1){\times}(1,0,1)_{12}$.

X11ARIMA Procedure (한국형 X11ARIMA 프로시져에 관한 연구)

  • X11ARIMA is established on the basis of X11 which is one of smoothing approach in time series area and this procedure was introduced by Bureau of Census of United States and developed by Dagum(1975). This procedure had been updated and adjusted by Dagum(1988) with 174 economic index of North America and has been used until nowadays. Recently, X12ARIMA procedure has been studied by William Bell et.al. (1995) and Chen. & Findly(1995) whose approaches adapt adjusting outliers, Trend-change effects, seasonal effect, arid Calender effect. However, both of these procedures were implemented for correct adjusting the economic index of North America. This article starts with providing some appropriate and effective ARIMA model for 102 indexes produced by national statistical office in Korea; which consists of production(21), shipping(27), stock(27), and operating rate index(21). And a reasonable smoothing method will be proposed to reflect the specificity of Korean economy using several moving average model. In addition, Sulnal(lunar happy new year) and Chusuk effects will be extracted from the indexes above and both of effects reflect contribution of lunar calender effect. Finally, we will discuss an alternative way to estimate holiday effect which is similar to X12ARIMA procedure in concept of using both of ARIMA model and Regression model for the best fitness.

Time-series Analysis and Prediction of Future Trends of Groundwater Level in Water Curtain Cultivation Areas Using the ARIMA Model (ARIMA 모델을 이용한 수막재배지역 지하수위 시계열 분석 및 미래추세 예측)

  • This study analyzed the impact of greenhouse cultivation area and groundwater level changes due to the water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complexes. The groundwater observation data in the Miryang study area were used and classified into greenhouse and field cultivation areas to compare the groundwater impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complex. We identified the characteristics of the groundwater time series data by the terrain of the study area and selected the optimal model through time series analysis. We analyzed the time series data for each terrain's two representative groundwater observation wells. The Seasonal ARIMA model was chosen as the optimal model for riverside well, and for plain and mountain well, the ARIMA model and Seasonal ARIMA model were selected as the optimal model. A suitable prediction model is not limited to one model due to a change in a groundwater level fluctuation pattern caused by a surrounding environment change but may change over time. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically check and revise the optimal model rather than continuously applying one selected ARIMA model. Groundwater forecasting results through time series analysis can be used for sustainable groundwater resource management.

Seasonal adjustment in Korean economic statistics and major issues (우리나라 경제통계의 계절조정 현황과 주요 쟁점)

  • Seasonal adjustment is useful to provide a better understanding of underlying trends in Korean economic statistics. The seasonal component also includes calendar effects such as Seol and Chuseok. Most popular seasonal adjustment methods are X-12-ARIMA of the U.S. Bureau of the Census and TRAMO-SEATS of the Bank of Spain. Statistics Korea and the Bank of Korea compile seasonally adjusted series of several Korean economic statistics. This paper illustrates basic principles for seasonal adjustment and the current status of seasonal adjustment in Korea based on previous research. In addition, several issues on seasonal adjustment are addressed.

  • The purpose of this study is to forecast the marine trading volumes using multiplicative seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average(ARIMA) model. The paper proceeds by comparing the forecasting performances of the unload volumes with those of the load volumes with Box-Jenkins ARIMA model. Also, I present the predicted values based on the ARIMA model. The result shows that the trading volumes increase very slowly.

  • 최근 들어 가뭄과 국지성 호우 등의 기상이변이 지속적으로 발생하고 있으며, 이는 국민 삶의 발전과 향상에 밀접한 관계가 있는 것으로 전세계적으로 이에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 특히 댐의 효율적 관리와 안정적인 운영은 홍수피해 방지, 안정적인 용수공급과 같은 국민 생활과 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있어 수자원의 효율적인 운영과 이용은 장기적인 관점을 통하여 수립해야 한다. 이와 같이 댐 유입량의 예측은 유출모형의 목적 중 중요한 부분으로 확정론적 모형이 시 혹은 일유량과 같은 매우 짧은 시간의 유출을 예측하는데 주로 사용되지만 이는 매개변수의 추정이 불가능하거나 실제유역에서의 측정이 불가능 할 경우에는 모형적용에 한계가 있다. 이에 반해 추계학적 모형에 의한 유출예측은 장기간의 유출을 과거자료의 통계학적 특성변수를 매개변수로 하여 예측하는 방법으로 모형의 적용에 필요한 매개변수가 적어 그 적용성이 간편한 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 계절형 ARIMA모형을 적용하여 과거자료의 적용범위, 매개변수의 산정, 적합성 판정에 대하여 판단하고, 이 모형이 월유입량의 예측에 적합한지를 검토하였다.

Effects of maximum speed limit on Gyeongbu Expressway (경부고속도로 최고제한속도 상향에 따른 교통사고 영향 분석)

  • In September 2010, the Korea government increased the speed limit on the Gyeongbu Expressway (Cheonan IC.-Yangjae IC) from 100 to 110 km per hour. This paper considers ARIMA-Intervention model to analyze the effects of the speed limit change on the incidences of traffic accidents and injuries. In addition, in order to investigate the effects more clearly, we also analyze the difference between the two lines of Cheonan IC-Yangjae IC and Busan IC-Cheonan IC. As a result, we observe that the numbers of accidents and injuries have increased after the speed limit change. The increases are strikingly distinctive in comparison to other lines (Busan IC-Cheonan IC) where there have been no changes in the maximum speed limit.
