Numerical analysis of the temperature distribution of the EM pump for the sodium thermo-hydraulic test loop of the GenIV PGSFR

  • The temperature distribution of an electromagnetic pump was analyzed with a flow rate of 1380 L/min and a pressure of 4 bar designed for the sodium thermo-hydraulic test in the Sodium Test Loop for Safety Simulation and Assessment-Phase 1 (STELLA-1). The electromagnetic pump was used for the circulation of the liquid sodium coolant in the Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS) of the Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (PGSFR) with an electric power of 150 MWe. The temperature distribution of the components of the electromagnetic pump was numerically analyzed to prevent functional degradation in the high temperature environment during pump operation. The heat transfer was numerically calculated using ANSYS Fluent for prediction of the temperature distribution in the excited coils, the electromagnet core, and the liquid sodium flow channel of the electromagnetic pump. The temperature distribution of operating electromagnetic pump was compared with cooling of natural and forced air circulation. The temperature in the coil, the core and the flow gap in the two conditions, natural circulation and forced circulation, were compared. The electromagnetic pump with cooling of forced circulation had better efficiency than natural circulation even considering consumption of the input power for the air blower. Accordingly, this study judged that forced cooling is good for both maintenance and efficiency of the electromagnetic pump.

Analysis of the fluid-solid-thermal coupling of a pressurizer surge line under ocean conditions

  • To investigate the effects of ocean conditions on the thermal stress and deformation caused by thermal stratification of a pressurizer surge line in a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP), the finite element simulation platform ANSYS Workbench is utilized to conduct the fluid-solid-thermal coupling transient analysis of the surge line under normal "wave-out" condition (no motion) and under ocean conditions (rolling and pitching), generating the transient response characteristics of temperature distribution, thermal stress and thermal deformation inside the surge line. By comparing the calculated results for the three motion conditions, it is found that ocean conditions can significantly improve the thermal stratification phenomenon within the surge line, but may also result in periodic oscillations in the temperature, thermal stress, and thermal deformation of the surge line. Parts of the surge line that are more susceptible to thermal fatigue damage or failure are determined. According to calculation results, the improvements are recommended for pipeline structure to reduce the effects of thermal oscillation caused by ocean conditions. The analysis method used in this study is beneficial for designing and optimizing the pipeline structure of a floating nuclear power plant, as well as for increasing its safety.

인터포저의 디자인 변화에 따른 삽입손실 해석 (Insertion Loss Analysis According to the Structural Variant of Interposer)

  • 본 연구에서는 실험 설계법을 통해 인터포저에서 Through Silicon Via (TSV) 및 Redistributed Layer (RDL)의 구조적 변형에 따른 삽입 손실 특성 변화를 확인하였다. 이때 3-요인으로 TSV depth, TSV diameter, RDL width를 선정하여, 구조적 변형을 일으켰을 때 400 MHz~20 GHz에서의 삽입 손실을 EM (Electromagnetic) tool Ansys HFSS(High Frequency Simulation Software)를 통해 확인하였다. 반응 표면법을 고려하였다. 그 결과 주파수가 높아질수록 RDL width의 영향이 감소하고 TSV depth와 TSV diameter의 영향이 증가하는 것을 확인했다. 또한 분석 범위 내에서 RDL width를 증가시키면서 TSV depth를 감소시키고 TSV diameter를 약 10.7 ㎛ 고정하는 것이 삽입 손실을 가장 최적화 시키는 결과가 관찰되었다.

  • Hydrostatic transmission (HST) comprises rotary parts, shafts, valve plate, swashplate, and servo pistons. Ensuring structural stability of each part of an HST has a significant impact on product safety. In this study, the structural stability of HST in agricultural machinery and industrial vehicles was analyzed using ANSYS software. For conservative evaluation, high-pressure conditions (35.5 MPa and 2 MPa pilot pressure) were applied as load conditions. The number of grids used in the calculations ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 million depending on modeling requirements. Structural analysis was performed for essential parts and safety factor was analyzed. All major parts of HST had a safety factor of ≥ 1.5. Thus, they were judged to be structurally safe. This study provides important information for designing an HST system.

Design and fabrication of beam dumps at the µSR facility of RAON for high-energy proton absorption

  • The Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON-line experiments in Korea houses several accelerator complexes. Among them, the µSR facility will be initially equipped with a 600 MeV and 100 kW proton beam to generate surface muons, and will be upgraded to 400 kW with the same energy. Accelerated proton beams lose approximately 20% of the power at the target, and the remaining power is concentrated in the beam direction. Therefore, to ensure safe operation of the facility, concentrated protons must be distributed and absorbed at the beam dump. Additionally, effective dose levels must be lower than the legal standard, and the beam dumps used at 100 kW should be reused at 400 kW to minimize the generation of radioactive waste. In this study, we introduce a tailored method for designing beam dumps based on the characteristics of the µSR facility. To optimize the geometry, the absorbed power and effective dose were calculated using the MCNP6 code. The temperature and stress were determined using the ANSYS Mechanical code. Thus, the beam dump design consists of six structures when operated at 100 kW, and a 400 kW beam dump consisting of 24 structures was developed by reusing the 100 kW beam dump.

Compact Anode Design with the Heat Capacity Performance in Rotating Anode X-ray Tube for Digital Radiography

  • We studied the compact anode design to develop 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube with large focal spot 1.2 mm, small focal spot 0.6 mm and tube voltage 150 kV for large hospital digital radiography using computer thermal simulation. The larger thermal radiation effect in a high vacuum can reduce the temperature of anode so the method to increase the surface area of anode is investigated. The anode has the multi-tier shape at the back side of TZM body of anode and also bigger diameter of anode. The number of multi-tiers was varied from 6 to 15 and the diameter of anode was also varied from ${\Phi}74$ to ${\Phi}82$. From ANSYS transient thermal simulation result, we could obtain $1056.4^{\circ}C$ anode maximum temperature when applying 100 kW input power at 0.1 second on target focal track which is less than $1091^{\circ}C$ of the conventional 75 kW X-ray tube with reduced anode weight by 15.5% than the conventional anode. The compact anode of reduced anode weight is able to improve the unwanted noise when the rotor is rotating at high-speed and also reduce the rotational torque which the cost effective stator-coil is possible. It is believed that the anode with 15 ea multi-tiers using ${\Phi}82$ can satisfy with the specification of the anode heat capacity. From the results of this paper, it has been confirmed that the proposed compact anode can be used as the anode of 100 kW rotating anode X-ray tube for digital radiography.

디젤 분무와 천연 가스 분류의 거동 특성에 관한 기초 연구 (A Basic Study of the Behavior Characteristics of Diesel Spray and Natural-gas Jet)

  • This basic study is required to examine spray or jet behavior depending on fuel phase. In this study, analyses of diesel fuel(n-Tridecane, $C_{13}H_{28}$) spray and natural gas fuel(Methane, $CH_4$) jet under high temperature and pressure are performed by a general-purpose program, ANSYS CFX release 11.0, and the results of these are compared with experimental results of diesel fuel spray using the exciplex fluorescence method. The simulation results of diesel spray is analyzed by using the combination of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lagrangian Particle Tracking(LPT) and of a natural gas jet is analyzed by using Multi-Component Model(MCM). There are two study variables considered, that is, ambient pressure and injection pressure. In a macroscopic analysis, the higher ambient pressure is, the shorter spray or jet tip penetration is at each time after start of injection. And the higher injection pressure is, the longer spray or jet tip penetration is at each time after start of injection. When liquid fuel is injected, droplets of the fuel need some time to evaporate. However, when natural gas fuel is injected, the fuel does not need time to evaporate. Gas fuel consists of minute particles. Therefore, the gas fuel is mixed with the ambient gas more quickly at the initial time of injection than the liquid fuel is done. The experimental results also validate the usefulness of this analysis.

등가강성요소 모델을 이용한 AFM 마이크로캔틸레버의 진동해석 (Vibration Analysis of AFM Microcantilevers Using an Equivalent Stiffness Element Model)

  • 원자현미경(AFM)은 마이크로캔틸레버 끝단의 팁이 시료에 다가갈 때 발생하는 팁과 시료 표면 사이의 상호작용을 이용하여 시료의 다양한 특성들을 찾아내는 매우 유용한 도구이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 AFM 마이크로캔틸레버의 팁과 시료 사이의 상호작용력을 비선형 스프링을 이용하여 동일한 강성을 갖는 요소로 모델링 하였고 유한요소법을 이용하여 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 또한 시뮬레이션 결과를 적합직교분해법을 이용하여 분석함으로써 AFM 마이크로캔틸레버의 복잡한 동적 특성을 파악하였으며 이를 같은 방법으로 분석한 실험 결과와 비교하였다. 그 결과 팁과 시료 사이의 상호작용력을 효과적으로 모델링 할 수 있는 방법을 제시하였으며 이러한 상호작용력으로 인해 고차모드의 영향이 증가함을 확인하였다.

Computational analysis of pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons with tree planting influenced by building roof shapes

  • The objective of this study is to investigate numerically the effect of building roof shaps on wind flow and pollutant dispersion in a street canyon with one row of trees of pore volume, $P_{vol}=96%$. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to evaluate air flow and pollutant dispersion within an urban street canyon using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM) based on k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to close the equation system. The numerical model is performed with ANSYS-CFX code. Vehicle emissions were simulated as double line sources along the street. The numerical model was validated by the wind tunnel experiment results. Having established this, the wind flow and pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons (with six roof shapes buildings) are simulated. The numerical simulation results agree reasonably with the wind tunnel data. The results obtained in this work, indicate that the flow in 3D domain is more complicated; this complexity is increased with the presence of trees and variability of the roof shapes. The results also indicated that the largest pollutant concentration level for two walls (leeward and windward wall) is observed with the upwind wedge-shaped roof. But the smallest pollutant concentration level is observed with the dome roof-shaped.

유한 요소법을 이용한 히트싱크의 성능평가를 위한 열해석 연구 (Thermal Analysis of the Heat Sink Performance using FEM)

  • 최근 전자 및 기계부품 기술의 발전으로 전자 장비는 더욱 고성능화, 소형화, 다기능화 되면서 시스템 내부에 발생하는 발열부의 온도를 제어하기 위해 히트싱크가 사용된다. 본 연구에서는 내부 터널 구조의 2가지 형상의 히트싱크의 열 성능평가를 유한요소 프로그램인 ANSYS를 이용하여 수치해석 하였다. 수치해석은 자연대류 상태에서의 열 성능을 수치해석으로 비교 분석하여 냉각핀 형상에 따른 열 성능을 평가하였다. 또한 시간에 따른 열전달 특성과 온도분표의 해석결과를 기초로 하여 히트싱크의 성능평가를 예측하였다. 수치해석의 결과, 형상 A 히트싱크가 형상 B의 히트싱크보다 열 전달율이 자연대류에서 약 70% 향상되었다.
