  • In order to study interactions between climate change and air quality, a modeling system including the downscaling scheme has been developed in the integrated manner. This research focuses on the development of a downscaling method to utilize CCSM3 outputs as the initial and boundary conditions for the regional climate model, MM5. Horizontal/vertical interpolation was performed to convert from the latitude/longitude and hybrid-vertical coordinate for the CCSM3 model to the Lambert-Conformal Arakawa-B and sigma-vertical coordinate for the MM5 model. A variable diagnosis was made to link between different variables and their units of CCSM and MM5. To evaluate the dynamic downscaling performance of this study, spatial distributions were compared between outputs of CCSM/MM5 and NRA/MM5 and statistic analysis was conducted. Temperature and precipitation patterns of CCSM/MM5 in summer and winter showed a similar pattern with those of observation data in East Asia and the Korean Peninsula. In addition, statistical analysis presented that the agreement index (AI) is more than 0.9 and correlation coefficient about 0.9. Those results indicate that the dynamic downscaling system built in this study can be used for the research of interaction between climate change and air quality.

  • Recently, noise reduction in room air conditioner has been one of the most important issues as well as cooling efficiency. A rotary compressor is widely used in room air conditioners. But, the rotary compressor is the dominant vibration/noise source in an air conditioner. A number of studies have been conducted on reducing rotary compressor vibration/noise through improving muffler and resonator design. However, a noise delivering path between compressor and pipe is not fully taken into consideration. In this paper, the vibration analysis model of rotary compressor is modeled using RecurDyn and experimental validation is presented.

  • The transient behavior of a passive air breathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) operated on vapor-feeding mode is studied in this paper. It generally takes 30 minutes after starting for the cell response to come to its steady-state and the response is sometimes unstable. A mathematical dynamic one-dimensional model for simulating transient response of the DMFC is presented. In this model a DMFC is decomposed into its subsystems using lumped model and divided into five layers, namely the anodic diffusion layer, the anodic catalyst layer, the proton exchange membrane (PEM), the cathodic catalyst layer and the cathodic diffusion layer. All layers are considered to have finite thickness, and within every one of them a set of differential-algebraic governing equations are given to represent multi-components mass balance, such as methanol, water, oxygen and carbon dioxide, charge balance, the electrochemical reaction and mass transport phenomena. A one-dimensional, isothermal and mass transport model is developed that captures the coupling between water generation and transport, oxygen consumption and natural convection. The single cell is supplied by pure methanol vapor from a methanol reservoir at the anode, and the oxygen is supplied via natural air-breathing at the cathode. The water is not supplied from external source because the cell uses the water created at the cathode using water back diffusion through nafion membrane. As a result of simulation strong effects of water transport were found out. The model analysis provides several conclusions. The performance drop after peak point is caused by insufficiency of water at the anode. The excess water at the cathode makes performance recovery impossible. The undesired crossover of the reactant methanol through the PEM causes overpotential at the cathode and limits the feeding methanol concentration.

  • Swirl injector with multi-stage tangential entry was analyzed to suppress high-frequency combustion instability in Liquid Rocket Engines. In order to analyze the effect of swirl injector as an acoustic absorber, swirl injector was regarded as a quarter-wave resonator and it's damping capacity is verified in atmospheric temperature. It has a finite mode of vibration and natural frequencies which can be tuned to the natural frequencies of a model combustion chamber. The interior air core shape of injector is more stable in the case of using the swirl injector with multi-stage entry than with single-stage entry. Also, when the swirl injector with multi-stage entry is used, tuned-injector length for unstable mode is well agreed with the calculated length. From the experimental data, it is proved that if the interior air core shape of swirl injector is stable, the fine tuned swirl injector can decrease the unstable mode of model chamber effectively and increase the damping rate.

  • This study deals with the BIM (Building Information Modeling)-based energy performance analysis implemented in EnergyPlus. The BIM model constructed at Revit is updated at Design Builder, adding HVAC models and converted compatibly with the EnergyPlus. We can obtain the input values about HVAC system and building environment such as HVAC system efficient, the number of air changes and energy consumption of equipment on applying GAs (Genetic algorithms). After modification about HVAC system, Optimization about HVAC system energy consumption can be analyzed. In order to maximize the building energy performance, a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization technique is applied to the modified HVAC models. Throughout the proposed building energy simulation, finally, the best optimized HVAC control schedule for the target building can be obtained in the form of "supply air temperature schedule". Throughout the supply air temperature schedule is applied to energy performance simulation, we obtained energy saving effect result on simulation.

  • Recently, as the supply of residential polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) increases, the durability and lifetime of the PEMFC system are becoming important. The related studies have been mainly focused on the durability and lifetime of materials while the research on the durability and maintenance of the system level is insufficient. In this paper, a model-based fault detection method is developed considering an air supply system that is dominant to the system performance and efficiency. A commercial 1 kW residential fuel cell system is built, and experiments are conducted under various operation loads and states (normal, 6 faults). From the experimental data, nominal models and residuals are generated. With the residual pattern obtained from real-time data, the detection and classification of various faults can be possible. The technical importance of this paper is to minimize extra sensor installation by using the empirical model rather than a complex mathematical model, and to decrease the number of models by using the applicable model at three loads. Finally, the model-based fault detection method for the air supply system of a PEMFC is established and is expected to be applicable to other subsystems.

  • UAM is emerging as the biggest issue in the aviation industry and which is attracting a lot of attention not only domestically but also internationally. In Korea, active research is being conducted centered on the government and industry-university research institutes, such as the establishment of a future K-UAM concept of operation. Therefore, in this study applies the SORA (Specific Operation Risk Assessment) model established by the European JARUS (Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems) to apply the K-UAM operation environment and specific corridor for the purpose of cargo transportation that will be operated in the future that the government is promoting. We intend to suggest policy and technical measures for risk mitigation in the initial operating environment by evaluating the level of risk and analyzing the results.

  • The propellant tank, which is a space launch vehicle structure, must have structural integrity as various static and dynamic loads are applied during ground transportation, launch standby, take-off and flight processes. Because of these characteristics, the propellant tank cylinder, the structural object of this study, has a thin thickness, so buckling due to compressive load is considered important in the cylinder design. However, the existing buckling design standards such as NASA and Europe are fairly conservative and do not reflect the latest design and manufacturing technologies. In this study, nonlinear buckling analysis is performed using various analysis models that reflect initial defects, and a method for establishing new buckling design standards for cylinder structures is presented. In conclusion, it was confirmed that an effective lightweight design of the cylinder structure for common bulkhead propulsion tank could be realized.

  • A discrete event simulation model is developed to evaluate the performances of three different revenue management methods for an air cargo network from Northeast China to North America and Europe. In the first method, a bid price model is applied only to the routes that pass through Incheon. In the second method, the bid price model is applied to all the routes. In third method, bid price and virtual nesting models are applied to the routes that pass through Incheon. The results show that the total revenue significantly increases with the employment of pricing and capacity control. The developed simulation model is a useful research tool to study marketing strategies for air cargo operations.

  • Turbulent mixing field with recirculating flow which is formed by injecting gaseous fuel on the main air stream is solved numerically by a finite difference method. The turbulence model for obtaining transport properties was k-.epsilon. model, which was obtained from turbulent kinetic energy and its dissipation rate. Considering the effects of streamline curvature, modified k-.epsilon model was used. Generally, Modified k-.epsilon. model makes better predictions than standard model, and from this result, it is recognized that standard model has deficiency when applied to turbulent recirculating flows, and that modified k-.epsilon. model takes into account of streamline curvature effects properly. Meanwhile, A more study will be necessary to find the reason why large differences between predicted and experimental turbulent kinetic energy exist.
