  • Graphite is a commercial anode material to have the specific capacity of 372 mAh/g and the true density of 2.2 g/ml. Many effort had been pouring to find out the better material than graphite. Good candidates are silicon, tin, etc. Zinc is also a plausible candidate to have the specific capacity of 412 mAh/g and the true density of 7.14 g/ml. In this study, the Zn based anode material including indium and nickel as minor additives was synthesised. In order to get the homogeneouly mixed Zn-In-Ni composite material, the sol-gel method was used. The anode prepared by Zn-In-Ni composite material has the $1^{st}$ specific capacity of 910 mAh/g. Through prolonged charge-discharge cycling, the specific capacities were reduced to 365 (at $31^{st}$ cycle) and 378 mAh/g (at $62^{th}$ cycle). The $1^{st}$ Ah efficiency was 45% and Ah efficiencies were exhibited at the prolonged cycle.

  • Honey used as conventional medicine has various pharmacological properties. In the honey and anti-inflammatory effect, Gelam honey and Manuka honey has been reported to exert anti-inflammatory activity. However, the anti-inflammatory effect and potential mechanisms of acacia honey (AH) are not well understood. In this study, we investigated anti-inflammatory activity and mechanism of action of AH in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. AH attenuated NO production through inhibition of iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. AH also decreased the expressions of $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ as pro-inflammatory cytokines, and MCP-1 expression as a pro-inflammatory chemokine. In the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms, AH decreased LPS-mediated $I{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$ degradation and subsequent nuclear accumulation of p65, which resulted in the inhibition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation in RAW264.7 cells. AH dose-dependently suppressed LPS-mediated phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and p38 in RAW264.7 cells. In addition, AH significantly inhibited ATF2 phosphorylation and nuclear accumulation of ATF2 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. These results suggest that AH has an anti-inflammatory effect, inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, iNOS, $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, $IL-1{\beta}$ and MCP-1 via interruption of the $NF-{\kappa}B$ and MAPK/ATF2 signaling pathways.

  • Objectives : In this study, we investigated the effects of Agastachis Herba water (AH-W) extract on compound 48/80-induced mast cell degranulation and histamine release in human mast cells and also anti-asthmatic effect of AH-W extract on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma in mice. Methods : Human mast cells, HMC-1 were treated with AH-W extract in the presence or absence of compound 48/80 (C48/80). Mast cell degranulation was observed by microscope, and the histamine release was measured in culture medium by ELISA. For preparation of asthmatic in vivo model, mice were sensitized (0, 7, and 14 days) with OVA and airway challenged (21, 23, 25, 27, and 29 days). AH-W extract at doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg/body weight was orally administered during OVA challenge once per a day. The levels of immunoglobulin (Ig) E, and Th1/Th2 cytokines, IFN-$\gamma$ and IL-4 were measured in the sera of mice by ELISA. The histopathological change of lung tissues was observed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) staining. Results : The treatment of AH-W extract significantly decreased the mast cell degranulation and histamine release in C48/80-stimulated HMC-1 cells. In addition, The administration of AH-W extract at does of 100 and 300 mg/kg significantly decreased the serum levels of OVA-specific IgE compared with those of OVA control group. In H&E and PAS staining, AH-W extract inhibited OVA-induced airway inflammation, and inflammatory cells infiltration, and also histopathological damages on lung tissues such as bronchiole epithelial desquamation, goblet cells hyperplasia, and mucin releasing. Conclusions : These results indicate that AH-W extract may improve asthmatic symptoms through mast cell stabilization and inhibiting the lung inflammation in bronchial asthma.

  • Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is the master regulator of xenobiotics metabolizing enzymes (XMEs). AhR is activated by aryl hydrocarbons upon binding then goes into the cell nucleus and acts as a transcription factor. Despite the role of AhR in human physiology has been investigated for a long while, it is yet to be understood mainly due to the lack of appropriate chemical agents. Furthermore, it has been reported that AhR is related to a wide range of pathogenesis. In addition, recent studies suggest that the study on the development of AhR antagonist may provide a valid therapeutic agent. Some known antagonists in current use are partially agonistic whereas a pure antagonist is still absent. In this study, two phenyl-ring structures of phenyldiazenylphenylpicolinamide has been modified into various structures and evaluated its impact on the AhR antagonistic activity to elucidate the structure-activity relationship.

  • $LiNiO_2$ cathode powders with fine size have been synthesized by spray pyrolysis from the spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol. The as-prepared powders with spherical shape, porous structure and micron size turned into $LiNiO_2$ powders with micron size and regular morphology after post-treatment at $800^{\circ}C$. The initial discharge capacities of the $LiNiO_2$ powders changed from 199 to 171mAh/g when the concentrations of the citric acid and ethylene glycol added to the spray solutions were changed from 0 to 1 M. The maximum initial discharge capacity of the $LiNiO_2$ powders obtained from the spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol was 198 mAh/g when the lithium component added to the spray solution was 6 mol% excess of the stoichiometric amount. The discharge capacities of the fine-sized $LiNiO_2$ powders dropped from 198 to 163 mAh/g by the 30 th cycle at a current density of 0.1 C.

  • In this study, the particle size of Si polycrystals was controlled through wet-sedimentation method, and changes in the capacity and cyclic characteristics of the Si anode material according to the particle size were observed. After wet-sedimentation of Si particles pulverized by a vibration mill, the non-uniform particle distribution of Si was uniformly controlled. The d50 of a sample in which Si was sedimented for 24 hours decreased to 0.50 ㎛. As a result of the electrochemical characteristic analysis, the Rct value representing the resistance in the electrode was significantly reduced due to the decrease in particle size. The unclassified Si sample exhibited a discharge capacity of 2,869 mAh/g in the first cycle, and decreased to 85.7 mAh/g after 100 cycles. The sample in which Si was classified for 24 hours showed a capacity of 3,394 mAh/g initially, and maintained a capacity of 1,726 mAh/g after 100 cycles. As the size of the Si particles decreased, the discharge capacity increased and the cycle life was also increased.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects on bone repair of different concentrations of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) added to AH Plus. Materials and Methods: Bone tissue reactions were evaluated in 30 rats (Rattus norvegicus) after 7 and 30 days. In the AH + MTA10, AH + MTA20, and AH + MTA30 groups, defects in the tibiae were filled with AH Plus with MTA in proportions of 10%, 20% and 30%, respectively; in the MTA-FILL group, MTA Fillapex was used; and in the control group, no sealer was used. The samples were histologically analyzed to assess bone union and maturation. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were performed for multiple pairwise comparisons (p ≤ 0.05). Results: At the 7-day time point, AH + MTA10 was superior to MTA-FILL with respect to bone union, and AH + MTA20 was superior to MTA-FILL with respect to bone maturity (p < 0.05). At the 30-day time point, both the AH + MTA10 and AH + MTA20 experimental sealers were superior not only to MTA-FILL, but also to AH + MTA30 with respect to both parameters (p < 0.05). The results of the AH + MTA10 and AH + MTA20 groups were superior to those of the control group for both parameters and experimental time points (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest the potential benefit of using a combination of these materials in situations requiring bone repair.
