KNN is widely used in the electronic industry such as memory devices, sensors, and capacitors due to various structural, electrical, and eco-friendly properties. In this study, Mn-doped KNN was prepared by adopting a sol-gel method with advantages of low cost and large area thin film fabrication. The Mn-doped KNN thin films were deposited by annealing in air for 1 hour and 700℃. The surface morphology characteristics and grain size of the heat-treated KNN were observed by SEM and AFM, and we used the X-ray diffraction for measuring the crystal phase of KNN. The XRD analysis results show that the fabrication of (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb1-xMnn)O3 thin films by sol-gel method in the thin film process of this experiment was stable in the perovskite phase of c-axis orientation. The SEM and AFM results show that the cracks were not confirmed from the fracture surface data of KNN thin films and were densely deposited with thin films with uniform thickness.
In this paper, a model reference adaptive control for the atomic force microscope (AFM) of tapping mode is investigated. The dynamics between the AFM system and al sample is mathematically modeled as a second order spring-mass-damper system with oscillatory inputs. The attractive and repulsive forces between the tip of the AFM system and the sample are derived using the Lennard-Jones potential energy. By non-dimensionalizing the displacement of the tip and the input frequency, the chaotic behavior near a resonance frequency is better depicted through the non-dimensionalized equations. Four nonlinear analysis techniques, a phase portrait, sensitive dependence on initial conditions, a power spectral density function, and a Pomcare map are investigated. Because the equations of motion derived in this paper involve unknown parameter values such as the damping effect of the air and the interaction constants between materials, the standard model reference adaptive control is adopted. Two control objectives, the prevention of chaos and the tracking of reference signal, are pursued. Simulation results are included.
Aluminium nitride thin film was deposited on Au electrode and Si substrate by radio frequency sputtering system. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was utilized to identify the AlN phase, and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to obtain the images of surface morphology and roughness value of AlN thin film. The result of XRD and AFM measurement showed that the AlN thin film has strong c-axs orientation and smooth surface. In order to investigate piezoelectric response and polarization properties along to the direction of electric field, PFM (Piezoresponse Force Microscope) system was used, and the images of piezoelectric response due to switching of polarization was observed by PFM.
The SPM could image the most detailed microstructure of a sample in a wet and dry state by measuring the interaction between the atoms on the sample surface and the extremely sharp probe tip. The refined fibre exhibited large wrinkles formed by fibrillar bundles, the disintegrated fibres extensively showed “scale-like features”. By using the Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM) and Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) including Phase Detection Microscopy (PDM) and Force Modulation Microscopy (FMM), it was possible to investigate surface topography, surface roughness and mechanical property (hardness or visco-elasticity) of fibre surface in detail. The PDM and FMM images showed that the disintegrated only fibre displayed uniform mechanical properties, whereas the refined one did not. The surface roughness of pulp fibres was higher in refined fibres than in disintegrated fibres due to the presence of external fibrils. These SPM images would be used to provide visual evidence of morphological change of a single fibre created during mechanical treatments such as refining, drying, calendering and so on.
In this study, the deformation behavior of semi-solid Al-Si alloy was investigated by nanoindenter as a part of the research on the surface crack behavior in thixoformed automobile component. The microstructure of semi-solid Al-Si alloy consists of primary and eutectic regions. In eutectic regions the crack initiation begins with initial fracture of the eutectic silicon particles and inside other intermetallic phases. Nano-deformation characteristics in the eutectic and primary phase of semi-solid aluminium alloy were investigated through the nano-indentation experiments and the AFM observation. In addition, mechanical properties of each region were investigated and compared with each other.
Even a pure bulk Fe has a complicated magnetic phase and its magnetism is still needed to be clarified. In this study we investigated the magnetism of bcc and fcc bulk Fe with total energy calculations as functions of atomic volume. The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method was adopted within a generalized gradient approximation. The ground state of bulk Fe is confirmed to be of ferromagnetic (FM) bcc. For fcc structured Fe an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state is more stable compared to FM states which exist as low spin and high spin states. The stable AFM states were found to accompany a tetragonal distortion, while the FM states remained in a cubic symmetry. At an expanded lattice constant a high spin FM state was calculated to be able to be stabilized with significant enhanced magnetic moment compared to the value of the ground state, bcc FM.
Phase transformation effects on mechanical properties of $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$, which is a promising candidate material for Phase Change Random Access Memory (PRAM), were studied. $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ thin films, which was thermally annealed with different conditions, were analyzed using XRD, AFM, 4-point probe method and reflectance measurement. As the temperature and the dwelling time increased, crystallity and grain size increased, which enhanced elastic modulus and hardness. Furthermore, N2 doping, which was used for better electrical properties, was proved to decrease elastic modulus and hardness of $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$.
We are developing a phase change etching technology using an inorganic photoresist of GeSbTe film which is the recording material of the phase change disc. A selective etching phenomenon between amorphous and crystalline states can be utilized with an alkaline etchant. Phase-change pits could be formed using this technique, in which the etching selectivity is strongly dependent on the concentration of the etchant. The degree of etching was investigated by the transmittance between crystalline and amorphous films after the wet-etching. The pits patterned on the disc could be observed by AFM after wet-etching.
Recently, hexagonal manganites have attracted much attention because of the coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. The crystal structure of hexagonal manganites consists of $MnO_5$ polyhedra in which $Mn^{3+}$ ion is surrounded by three oxygen atoms in plane and two apical oxygen ions. The Mn ions within Mn-O plane form a triangular lattice and couple the spins through the AFM superexchange interaction. Due to incomplete AFM coupling between neighboring Mn ions in the triangular lattice, the system forms a geometrically-frustrated magnetic state. Among hexagonal manganites, $YMnO_3$, in particular, is the best known experimentally since the f states are empty. In addition, for applications, $YMnO_3$ thin films have been known as promising candidates for non-volatile ferroelectric random access memories. However, $YMnO_3$ has low magnetic order temperature (~70 K) and A-type AFM structure, which hinders its applications. We have synthesized $YMn1_{-x}Cr_xO_3$ (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1) samples by the conventional solid-state reaction. The powders of stoichiometric proportions were mixed, and calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ for $YMn1_{-x}Cr_xO_3$ for 24 h. The obtained powders were ground, and pressed into 5-mm-thick disks of 1/2-inch diameter. The disks were directly put into the oven, and heated up to $1,300^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 24 h. The phase of samples was checked at room temperature by powder x-ray diffraction using a Rigaku Miniflex diffractometer with Cu $K{\alpha}$ radiation. All the magnetization measurements were carried out with a superconducting quantum-interference-device magnetometer. Our experiments point out that the Cr-doped samples show the characteristics of a spin-glass state at low temperatures.
