  • Surface energies calculated from measured contact angles between several solutions and test samples, such as Si wafer, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$, PTFE(Polytertrafluoroethylene), and DLC(Diamond Like Carbon) films, based on geometric mean method and Lewis acid base method. In order to relate roughness to adhesion force, surface roughness of test samples were scanned large area and small by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy). Roughness was representative of test samples in large scan area and comparable with AFM tip radius in small scan area. Adhesion forces between AFM tip and test samples were matched well with order of roughness rather then surface energy. When AFM tips having different radius were used to measure adhesion force on DLCI film, sharper AFM tip was, smaller adhesion force was measured. Therefore contact area was more important factor to determine adhesion force.

  • High speed cutting is a machining process which cuts materials with the fast movement and rotation of a spindle in a machine tool. High speed cutting leaves a plastically deformed layer on the machined surface. This deformed layer affects in various forms to the surface roughness of machined parts such as the dimensional instability, the micro crack. The surface roughness is called surface integrity which is very important in precision cutting. This paper aims to study on the machined surfaces characteristics of aluminum alloy and brass by AFM(Atomic force microscope) measurement. The objective is contribution to ultra- precision cutting by exhibit foundation data of surface roughness and tool wear when parts are cutting with diamond tool at the factory.

  • By means of Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the effects of interface roughness and temperature on the exchange bias and coercivity in ferromagnetic (FM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) bilayers. Both exchange bias and coercivity are strongly dependent on interface roughness. For a perfect uncompensated interface a domain wall is formed in the AFM system during FM reversal, which results in a very small exchange bias. However, a finite interface roughness leads to a finite value of the exchange bias due to the existence of pinned spins at the AFM surface adjacent to the mixed interface. It is observed that the exchange bias decreases with increasing temperature, consistent with the experimental results. It is also observed that a bump in coercivity occurs around the blocking temperature.

  • Turbine blade has trouble of cracking at root region. Fracture surface of blade root is surveyed by SEM and AFM to clear relation between fracture mechanical parameter and surface parameter (striation width and surface roughness). Service stress is predicted by maximum height roughness $R_{max}$, on fractured surface and stress analysis on turbine blade. It is to thought that turbine blade is fractured by abnormal condition such as incorrect fittings between pin and pin hole but isn't fractured by normal service conditions such as steam pressure, centrifugal force and torsional force.

  • Behaviors of saturated fatty acid halides (CI4, C16, C18) were measured by LB method when the molecules were stimulated by pressure. The saturated fatty acid halides were deposited on the indium tin oxide(lTO) glass by the LB method. The average organic ultra thin film size and the surface roughness of the fatty acid halides thin films were investigated using AFM. It was found that AFM images show small surface roughness ($2.5{\sim}5.0\;nm$) and the organic ultra thin film size of $2.5{\sim}12\;nm$. Both aggregations and pin-holes were also seen on the AFM images. However we found that the surface roughness. These effects seem to be reasonable to be related to the increase of the organic ultra thin film size of fatty acid halides.

  • To measure surface roughness and smoothness of semiconducting materials in power cable, we have investigated the formation and growth process of carbon black showed by changing the content of carbon black. The specimens were primarily kneaded in material samples of pellet form for 5 minutes on rollers ranging between 70[$^{\circ}C$] and 100[$^{\circ}C$]. Then they were produced as sheets after pressing for 20 minutes at 180[$^{\circ}C$] with a pressure of 200[kg/cm]. The contents of conductive carbon black were the variable, and their contents were 20, 30 and 40[wt%], respectively. The surface roughness and smoothness of specimens were measured by SEM and AFM. From SEM experimental result, carbon black in specimens formed matrix as a particles. Also we showed growth process of carbon black according to an increment of the content of carbon black. From AFM experimental result, surface roughness of specimens decreased according to an increment of the content of carbon black.

  • Turbine blade is subject to force of three types ; the torsional force by torsional mount, the centrifugal force by the rotation of rotor and the cyclic bending force by steam pressure. The cyclic bending force was a main factor on fatigue strength. SEM fractography in root of turbine blade showed micro-clack width was not dependent on stress intensity factor range. Especially, fatigue did not exist on SEM photograph in root of turbine blade. To clear out the fracture mechanism of turbine blade, nanofractography was needed on 3-dimensional crack initiation and crack growth with high magnification. Fatigue striation partially existed on AFM photograph in root of turbine blade. Therefore, to find a fracture mechanism of the torsion-mounted blade in nuclear power plant, the relation between stress intensity factor range and surface roughness measured by AFM was estimated, and then the load amplitude ΔP applied to turbine blade was predicted exactly by root mean square roughness.

  • Effect of Surface roughness on nanoscale adhesion was studied experimentally by using colloidal probe technique. Glass micro balls having the radius of $3.3\~17.4{\mu}m$ were glued at the end of AFM cantilevers to prepare colloidal probes. Adhesion force between the colloidal probe and Si-wafer was measured using pull-off force measuring method. Results showed that the measured adhesion forces are not the function of the radius of the glued balls because the ball surfaces are rough. It is also found that roughness parameters such as $R_a,\;R_q\;and\;R_{max}$ do not have important role on nanoscale adhesion. In order to find the effect of surface roughness on nanoscale adhesion, the bearing areas were extracted from the measured topography of glued balls. After normalizing the measured adhesion force with the bearing area, it was found that the normalized adhesion force kept constant as function of the radius of glued ball.

  • The influence of cyclic treatments with H2O2/DIW (1 : 10) and HF/DIW (1 : 100) on the roughness of silicon surface in the wet chemical processing was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). During the step of the SC-1 cleaning, there is a large increase in roughness on the silicon surface which will result in the poor gate oxide breakdown properties. The roughness of the silicon wafer after the SC-1 cleaning step was reduced by cyclic treatments of hydrogen peroxide solution and hydrofluoric acid solution instead of HF-only cleaning. AFM images after each step clearly illustrated that the average roughness of silicon surface after three times treatments with H2O2 and HF solutions was reduced by 10 times compared with that after the SC-1 cleaning step.

  • People are always pursuing the aesthetic feeling relentlessly. But some people have such problems with their hairs like alopecia, cancer chemotherapy, burns, and scalp injury. So the synthetic hair has played a very important role to make up for these deficiencies. But long term use can lead to adverse reactions or uncomfortable feeling. This is primarily caused by its properties differ with human hair. In particular, nanotribological characterizations (roughness, friction force and adhesive force) of synthetic hair surface are dissatisfy with the needs of normal hairs. This paper presents the experiments on nanotribological characterizations measurements of human hairs (coloring hair, permed hair and common hair) in shampooing condition or without shampooing condition. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) to find out a range of synthetic hair nanotribological characterizations which can correspond with natural hair. The measurements of nanotribological characterizations focus on surface roughness, friction force and adhesive force, and a new design of AFM probe was used for measuring the nanotribological characterizations.
