  • The unrestrained shrinkage strain of alkali-activated (AA) slag concrete was examined and compared with design equations specified in code provisions and empirical equations proposed by Yang et al. The main parameters investigated were the water-to-binder ratio (W/B), unit water content and fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratio (S/a). Test results revealed that shrinkage strain of AA slag concrete is nearly proportional to the W/B ratio, whereas its time function is independent of the W/B ratio. The shrinkage strain of AA slag concrete increased significantly when the unit water content is above $185kg/m^3$, whereas it is marginally affected by the S/a ratio. The design equation of ACI 209 considerably overestimates the shrinkage behavior of AA slag concrete, whereas CEB-FIP equation tends to underestimate the shrinkage at the age more than 28 days. The empirical equation of Yang et al. is in better agreement with test results, showing that values of mean and standard deviation of error coefficients obtained from each specimen are 016 and 0.07, respectively.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the water absorption phenomenon of photoresist dry film, which is commonly used to build circuits on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) by photolithography, by using ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared). We have firstly observed significant change in fracture mode of dry film with respect to temperature and humidity, which we assumed the material transition from ductile to brittle. Secondly, we have established the process of absorption test for determining the diffusion coefficients of water into the dry film both with gravimeter and ATR-FTIR. We have successfully calculated the diffusion coefficients for each environmental conditions from the results which we achieved by gravimeter and ATR-FTIR. Compared to the gravimeter which is a conventional method for absorption test, the ATR-FTIR method in this study has been found to be very easy to use and have the same accuracy as gravimeter. Moreover, we are expecting to use the ATR-FTIR as an appropriate method to study the absorption phenomena related to any kinds of solvent and polymer system.

  • The effects of external restraint on the thermal stresses i n mass concrete are investigated through a series of parametric study. Two major factors affecting the degree of external restraint such as the ratio of length to height of the placed structure (L/H) and the elastic modulus of base structure ($E_r$) are employed as the parameters in a condition which a placing height H is 1.0m. Various conditions of I,/H and E, are analysed by a FEM program and the relationship between these two parameters is examined. The shape of stress distribution due to the external restraint is shown as linearity on the height direction of the section, and is influenced by L/H, $E_r$, and strength development of placed concrete. The external restraint can be devided by two part. One is an axial restraint and the other is a flexural restraint. When the level of external restraint is low, the structure behavior is mainly governed by flexural restraint, otherwise it is dependent on axial restraint. Comparing the calculated stress by the method of the ACI 207 committee with a finite element analysis, the fbrmer overestimates the external restraint stress when the degree of external restraint is weak, and underestimates when it is strong.

  • The present study evaluated the effective arrangement approach of transverse reinforcement in the jacket section for seismic strengthening of reinforced concrete columns. To simulate the full-scale columns, the section dimensions were determined as $450{\times}450mm$ for non-seismic existing columns and $750{\times}750mm$ for section enlargement strengthening columns. Over-lapped channel-shape bars and prefabricated bar units were proposed for closed-hoops in the jacket section, and conventional cross-ties anchored into existing columns and V-ties were considered for the supplementary ties. Test results showed that the axial capacity of the existing column and section enlargement columns with over-lapped channel-shape hoops was similar to the nominal strength calculated using ACI 318-14 procedure whereas the section enlargement column with prefabricated bar units possessed 1.25 times higher axial capacity than the nominal prediction. Furthermore, the axial ductility ratio of the section enlargement column with prefabricated bar unit was 139% higher than that of the existing column despite the potential size effect on ductility of concrete. Thus, it can be concluded that the developed prefabricated bar unit technique is practically useful for preventing the premature buckling of longitudinal reinforcement and confining core concrete in the section enlargement strengthening columns.

  • In this paper, a bending test was conducted on beams with two lap splice details when the effective depth of tensile high strength headed bars overlapped is the same and different. Through bending test, the lap splice performance of the high-strength headed bars was evaluated, and the applicability of the KDS-2021 design formula was evaluated. In the LS specimens with lap splice details where the high strength bars had the same effective depth, all specimens with 1.3 times or more of the development length of the KDS-2021 equation and 1 times or more of the ACI318-19 had the flexural failure mode after the ductile behavior to ensure sufficient lap splice performance. For specimens with details of lap joints between headed bars with different effective depth, when lap splice length is calculated by the KDS-2021 formula, the flexural stress may be transmitted so that the flexural strength at the cross section with the large effective depth and the cross section with the small effective depth becomes similar.

  • This paper introduces the acceptance criteria for reinforced concrete moment frames based on structural testing of ACI in preparing and proposes criteria for acceptable limiting drift and energy dissipation ratios of reinforced concrete shear walls for structural testing. Limiting drift and energy dissipation ratios were examined for tests on shear walls having ductile type failures. Test data were analyzed and compared to results for a suggested acceptance criteria that involves a limiting drift that is a function of aspect ratio a limiting energy dissipation ratio that is a function of displacement ductility and damping.

  • A method for approximating the failure surfaces for columns in compression and biaxial bending was proposed by using the moments along the line of a diagonal of the section. This method showed the better approximations for the failure surfaces of columns than the method of ACI. To calculate the moments along the line of a diagonal of the section, an approximate method which is not influenced by the number of steel s and the location of inner steels was proposed This method gave satisfactory approximations for practical sections of columns.

  • An experimental investigation to study the behavior of low rise structural walls using high strength concrete is presented. The test parameter included in the study were the level of constant axial load. The shear strength of walls is predicted by the design provision given in the current the American Concrete Institute Building Code ACI 318-95 and Architectural Institute Japan Code AIJ. The predictions are compared with the test results reported herein as well as those available in the literature.

  • To evaluate the strength of square reinforced concrete shot columns, thirty specimens were manufactured and tested under monotonically increasing concentric compression. The test parameters included the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement($\rho$h = 0.49~2.65), and concrete compressive strength (234, 437, 704 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Test results are shown that : (1) Behavior of high -strength concrete column is improved by providing increased volumetric ratio; and (2) ACI, Eq. is not proper to evaluate HSC short column strength.

  • The minimum shear and torsional reinforcement provisions in ACI 318-95 are still empirical. This paper describes the derivation of a rational approach for minimum shear and torsional reinforcement in beams so as to preclude brittle failure in shear and torsion. This is ensured by specifying that the beam's ultimate capacity of shear and torsion should be greater than its cracking shear and torsion. The formula presented herein for computing minimum shear and torsional reinforcement shows the need for modification of current provision for the minimum shear and torsion reinforcement.
