  • The switching power loss due to the panel capacitance during sustain period in AC PDP driving system can be minimized by using the energy recovery circuits. We proposed a new energy recovery circuit, SER1 (Seoul national univ. Energy Recovery circuit 1st). The experimental results of its application to a 42-inch surface discharge type AC PDP showed superior performance of SER1 in energy recovery efficiency and low distortion voltage waveform. Energy recovery efficiency of SER1 was measured up to 92.3 %, and the power dissipation during the sustain period was reduced by 15.2 W in 2000 pulse/frame compared with serial LC resonance energy recovery circuit.

  • A three-level sustain circuit with six-switches for an ac plasma display panel (AC-PDP) drive is proposed. The proposed circuit features half the voltage stresses of sustain switches and clamp diodes and significantly reduced power losses compared with those of the conventional ones. This circuit, realizable with reduced cost of the semiconductor devices, gives a significant improvement in the power efficiency, essential for the design of a drive circuit for the AC-PDP. A comparative analysis and experimental results we presented to show the validity of the proposed sustainer circuit.

  • This paper presents a new sustain driver employing energy recovery function to minimize power losses transpired during the operation of plasma display panel. The proposed circuit uses the resonance between the equivalent capacitance of panel and an external inductor to provide/recover energy to/from the panel. The proposed circuit can save the system cost compared with the conventional one, and has high-performance in energy recovery. To verify the validity of the proposed circuit, we implemented experiments based on 7.5 inch AC-PDP.

  • Misfiring is usually observed at high ambient temperature in plasma display panel (PDP). This leads to bad image quality and limits the productivity of PDP industry. In this paper, experimental observations and improvement on the misfiring at high ambient temperature have been studied. In order to reduce the high ambient temperature misfiring different slope of ramp erase pulse corresponding to the temperature are applied. The experimental results show that the suggested method is quite effective for reducing the high temperature misfiring phenomena.

  • In Color AC Plasma Display Panel(PDP). Low luminous efficiency is a major problem. We measured luminous efficiency of PDP as a function of the Ar mixing ratio. Our results show that efficiency has improved by $5{\sim}10%$ at the condition of 0.5% Ar mixing ratio, compared with Ne-Xe(4%) or He-Ne-Xe(4%) (He:Ne = 7:3) gas.

  • A new sustain driving method for the AC PDP is presented. In this driving method, the voltage source is connected to a storage capacitor, this storage capacitor charges an intermediate capacitor through LC resonance, and the panel is charged from the intermediate capacitor indirectly. In this way, the current flowing into the AC PDP when the sustain discharge occurs is reduced because the current is indirectly supplied from a capacitor, a limited source of charge. Thus, the input power to the output luminance efficiency is improved. Since the voltage supplied to the storage capacitor is doubled through LC resonance, this method call drive an AC PDP with a voltage source of about half of the voltage necessary in the conventional driving methods. The experiments showed that this charge-controlled driving method could drive ail AC PDP with a voltage source of as low as 107V. Using a panel of the conventional structure, luminous efficiency of 1.28 lm/W was achieved.

  • We have studied that the secondary electron emission characteristics of functional layers which have different kinds of MgO sub-micrometer size powder in AC-PDP. We used cathodoluminescence(CL) and gamma focused ion beam (${\gamma}$-FIB) system for measurement of secondary electron emission characteristics. Also we made 6 inch test panel which applied functional layers for evaluation of discharge characteristics.

  • The life of AC PDP depends largely on the sputtering-resistant property of the protecting layer such as MgO thin-film. However, it is very difficult to measure the sputtering-resistant property in the stable driving conditions of AC PDP. In this paper we have suggested a high speed measurement technique of the sputtering-resistant property of MgO thin-film by applying the MgO thin-film as the target of RF magnetron sputtering system. We have also applied this method to the e-beam MgO and sputter-MgO and e-beam MgO superior to sputter-MgO 3 times over. Also, the relation of Xe gas partial pressure(X) and sputtered thickness(Y) was Y=3.4X+13.5.
