고효율 AC PDP용 MgO 보호막 형성을 위한 중성빔 보조 증착 장비에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Equipment of Neutral Beam Assisted Deposition for MgO Protective Layer of High Efficient AC PDP)

  • The MgO protective layer plays an important role in plasma display panels (PDPs). Our previous work demonstrated that the properties of MgO thin film could be improved, which were deposited by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). However arc discharge always occurs during the IBAD process. To avoid this problem, oxygen neutral beam assisted deposition (NBAD) is used to deposit MgO thin films in this paper. The energy of the oxygen neutral beam was used as the parameter to control the deposition. The experimental results showed that the oxygen neutral beam energy was effective in determining in F/$F^+$ centers, crystal orientation, surface morphology of the MgO thin film, and the discharge characteristics of AC PDP. The lowest firing voltage $(V_f)$ and the highest secondary electron emission coefficient $(\gamma)$ were obtained when the neutral beam energy was 300 eV.

Sustain Discharge Mode Assisted by Various Auxiliary Pulses in AC PDP

  • The sustain discharge mode using various auxiliary pulses was proposed to improve both the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac-plasma display panel (ac-PDP). It was found that the various auxiliary pulses, which were applied at the rising and falling time of the sustain pulse, played a role in strengthening both the main and self-erasing discharges. As a result, the sustain waveforms with auxiliary pulse improved both the luminance of 23 % and the luminous efficiency of 36 %, when compared with the conventional sustain waveform without auxiliary pulse.

  • The wall charge is major factor to determine the discharge characteristics. The minimum sustain voltage related to the wall charge decay were investigated as a function of aging time in AC plasma display panel. For the long time scale, the wall charge decay time is dependent on the aging time. The inverse time scale of the wall charge decay has the maximum value at around 3 hours aging time and then fell down.

  • Over the years, plasma display panel (PDP) manufacturers have impressed the flat panel display industry with yet another new product essentially having the merits of a larger screen size. Since larger size implies higher power ratings, voltage/current ratings of the power devices used have become a rising concern. Another important concern is the brightness of PDP, one way of increasing which is by operating the PDP at higher frequencies. In order to address the above issues, a transformer coupled sustain-driver for AC-PDP is proposed During the transition time, the two windings of the transformer greatly boost up the displacement current flowing through the panel capacitance and hence enable a fast inversion of the voltage polarity with practical values of resonant inductance. In the proposed topology, the resonant inductance can be increased by a factor of $(n+1)^2$ as compared to prior approaches. Increased inductance results in lower current stresses. Moreover, high frequency operation is possible by using higher value of n (turn ratio of the transformer). The operational principle and design procedure of the proposed circuit are presented with theoretical analysis. The validity of the proposed sustain driver is established through simulation and experimental results using a 42-in PDP

  • A new driving waveform was proposed to reduce the cost in PDP-TV based on Vt close curve by eliminating the common (X) board under the conventional 42-inch panel structure. Due to the serious misfiring problem during a sustain-period when applying the new driving waveform, the wall voltage was measured and analyzed after the reset-period using Vt close curve. As a result of adopting the proposed driving waveform designed using Vt close curve analysis, the cost of PDP module could reduce compared with the conventional PDP module without any misfiring discharge.

  • To improve the luminance and luminous efficiency of a surface-discharge alternate current plasma display panel, we analyzed the sustain discharge characteristics as the voltage of the address electrode In the study. As the results, when the address voltage is a half of the sustain voltage in the sustain period, the luminance and luminance efficiency are the highest. The luminance efficiency increased about 16.2%~20.8% compared with the conventional type.

  • We measured 3-dimensional images of the light emitted from plasma display panel(PDP) by using newly proposed scanned point detecting method(SPDM). The SPDM has the point detector with pinhole. The light emitted from PDP cell at the in-focus position can pass through the pinhole and be collected by detector. On the contrary, the light emitted from PDP cell at the out-of-focus positions is focused on the front of or the behind of the pinhole. We could analyze the characteristic of 3-dimensional light emission distribution by SPDM. From 3-dimensional measurement of 828nm, we found that the efficient design of PDP cell, the importance of opening ratio, and the relations between BUS electrode position and discharge intensity are obtained.

  • AC PDP(Plasma Display panel)에서 MgO 보호막은 방전공간에 직접 노출되어 있기 때문에, AC PDP의 수명과 방전 특성이 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 그동안 보다 좋은 특성의 MgO 보호막을 증착하기 위한 연구가 Magnetron-sputtering, E-beam, ion-plating 등 여러 가지 방법에 의해 진행되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 Bipolar pulse power를 사용하여 sputtering 방법으로 MgO 보호막을 증착하여, 그 전기적, 광학적 특성을 기존의 magnetron-sputtering 방법으로 증착한 MgO 보호막과 비교하였다. 그 결과 Bipo1ar pulse power를 이용한 MgO 보호막의 결정립이 더 크게 나타났으며 그것으로부터 AC PDP의 수명향상에 효과가 있을 것으로 사료된다.

  • AC-PDP(Plasma Display Paner)는 기체 방전을 이용한 디스플레이로서 기체에 직접 노출되는 MgO 보호막의 2차전자 방출계수(${\gamma}$는 AC-PDP의 방전특성을 결정짓는 중요한 요소이다. MgO 보호막의 이차전자 방출계수는 AC-PDP에 주입하는 기체의 종류, 결정 방향성과 표면오염상태 등에 영향을 받는다. 본 연구에서는 유리 기판위에 Al 전극을 증착, 에칭후 screen printing으로 유전체를 도포, 소성 한 21inch 규격의 test panel에 MgO 보호막을 E-Beam으로 5000$\AA$ 증착한 후 MgO 보호막을 대기에 노출되는 시간간격을 변수로 하여 대기 열처리 한 MgO보호막의 2차 전자방출계수를 ${\gamma}$-FIB(Focused Ion Beam) 장치를 이용하여 측정하였다. 그리고 대기 노출 간격은 1분, 5분, 20분으로 하여 2차 전자방출계수를 측정하였고, 2차전자방출계수 측정 시 가속전압은 50V에서 200V까지 변화를 주었으며, Ne+을 사용하여 1.2$\times$10-4Torr의 진공도를 유지하며 측정하였다. 또한 각각의 MgO막의 에너지 갭을 광학적 방법을 이용하여 구하였다.
